Life lost ... Adam Tepper has been killed in Thailand while on holiday. Picture: Supplied Source: Supplied

A MELBOURNE man, who is the CEO of an Australian Bitcoin exchange company, has been killed in Thailand in a motorcycle crash.

The Phuket Gazette reports Adam Tepper's body was found in Sai Yuan Junction on Wiset Road below a destroyed traffic sign.

The motorbike Mr Tepper was riding was about 30 metres away.

Mr Tepper was killed after slamming his motorbike into the back of a parked trailer in the centre of the city.

His mother, Dianna Tepper, told 7 News her son was not wearing a helmet when the fatal accident happened.

"Please don't ever get on a motorbike without a helmet," she said.

"It if saves one life, I'm happy."

DFAT is providing consular assistance to his family.

Thai police confirmed he died on impact as the crashed occurred. He was in Thailand on holidays, according to media reports.

"Mr Tepper was not wearing a helmet and struck his head on the sign — he died instantly," said Capt Thada Sodarak of the Chalong Police.

"I believe he was moving very fast at the time of the crash, as part of the sign pole was buried a metre underground, and it was pulled out by the impact."

Tepper, 34, was from Langwarrin in Melbourne's southeast and was the CEO of a Bitcoin market company called Independent Reserve. It was founded in 2013 in Sydney.

The company's mission was to "transform digital currency technology into secure, robust and regulated financial services, and do things the right way".

Mr Tepper was a member of The Ao Chalong Yacht Club in Phuket, which posted a tribute message on their website and on their Facebook page today.

It stated: "Long-standing and active ACYC member, Adam Tepper, was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in the early hours of Friday 27 February. We will miss him both at the yacht club bar and out on the water. For those who want to raise a glass or two to Adam, there will be a wake at the club at 6pm Sunday 1 March."

Before Independent Reserve, his company's official website states that Mr Tepper founded a Sydney-based IT consultancy, specialising in the development of enterprise software for corporate clients.

"Through this venture, Adam established an offshore development centre in Asia, at the same time growing his corporate client base back in Sydney as well as attracting international clients," the site state.

"This led to a long-term partnership with Nine Entertainment in Sydney, becoming an integral part of their IT department. Through this partnership, Adam's firm provided the knowledge and resources to design, build and support critical business systems as well as evangelising content delivery via internet and mobile devices and established a dedicated mobile technology team for Nine Entertainment."

Mr Tepper is described as "a keen motorsport enthusiast" on his own company website, and was an annual participant in the Finke Desert Race.

"Adam thoroughly enjoys the great outdoors including off-roading, camping, trail riding and sailing. He has a Bachelor of Science from Swinburne University in Melbourne," it also states.

‘Humiliating’: Oil traded for toilet paper

A woman who just bought toilet paper at a supermarket reads her receipt as she leaves the private store in Caracas, Venezuela. Prices for essential goods have been rising dramatically in previous months. Source: AP

A COUNTRY that is running out of paper to wipe the population's backside could have the perfect solution to lubricate trade with its neighbours.

Trinidad and Tobago has offered its Venezuelan neighbour a deal: Toilet paper in exchange for oil.

It sounds a little too good to be true for the Carribean country of 1.2 million people, with some labelling the deal "humiliating" for Venezuela.

But the South American country has no shortage of oil — and not that much of anything else at the moment.

First milk, butter, coffee and cornmeal ran short but now the country lacks sufficient supplies of many basic products.

Venezuela has the world's second largest oil reserves behind Saudi Arabia and relies heavily on the natural resource. It makes up 95 per cent of the nation's exports revenue and close to a quarter of gross domestic product.

So it's no surprise it has been impacted by the global downturn in the price of oil. Amid a growing rate of inflation and a contracting economy, Venezuelans have been faced with widespread shortages of necessitates.

Trinidad and Tobago lies just off the North East coast of Venezuela and despite occasional tension over exploitation of cross border petroleum reserves, the countries have maintained a relatively amicable 50 year diplomatic relationship.

In a move demonstrating the clout of Trinidad and Tobago, President Kamla Persad-Bissessar proposed a commodity swap.

Speaking at a press conference earlier in the week following a meeting with the Venezuelan president, Ms Persad-Bissessar said such a deal would help both countries, reported Bloomberg.

"The Government of Trinidad and Tobago will purchase goods identified by the government of Venezuela from T and T's manufacturers, such as tissue paper, gasoline, and parts for machinery," she said.

In return, the president of the oil rich country, Nicolas Maduro, would ship bitumen and crude oil to the island nation.

However it's been the humble dunny roll that has come to represent Venezuela's ongoing crisis after the government "temporarily occupied" a toilet paper factory in September 2013, as stocks hit worrisome lows.

FROM THE PAST: Venezuela runs out of toilet paper, government vows to import 50 million rolls.

Discussions over the trade came on the same day a 14-year-old schoolboy was shot dead in Venezuela during an anti-government protest.

While the exact circumstances around his death have been slow to emerge, last month the government enacted resolution 8610, which allows security forces to use lethal force to control public demonstrations.

The growing unrest has been spurred on by skyrocketing prices and massive queues in supermarkets as shoppers scramble to snatch up what they can.

The situation has become so problematic that earlier in the month the government took over privately owned supermarkets in order to control prices and crowds.

It remains to be seen if the embattled Venezuelan president will be able to rein in the level of social dissent with the proposed swap with Trinidad.

But unless such a trade happens, the people of Venezuela will be left with very scarce supplies of — among other things — coffee, cooking oil, flour, sugar, milk and toilet paper.

News.com.au has contacted the Venezuelan Embassy for comment.

This is how you become a genius

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 27 Februari 2015 | 03.29

Genius: Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking in a scene from The Theory of Everything. Picture: AP Photo/Focus Features, Liam Daniel Source: AP

THEY have the ability to shape the world and change people's lives but what is it that sets a genius apart from someone who is just extremely intelligent?

Professor Allan Snyder, director of The Centre for the Mind at University of Sydney, said that the term "genius" was often misused and hard to define.

"It is very rare," Prof Snyder said.

"To me it's the creation itself and not a person's potential that defines genius. It's certainly not a score on an IQ test.

"For me it's especially someone who allows us to view the world in a new light - and that holds for any field."

Scientists have long tried to link genius and high intelligence without success, including one study that started in 1925.

According to neuropsychologist at the University of New Mexico, Rex Jung, genius is notoriously difficult to predict and does not necessarily require extremely high levels of intelligence.

In an article for Slate, Professor Jung points to a study by Lewis Terman which followed more than 1,500 children with extremely high IQs (above 140) to see if genius would eventually emerge.

While many grew up to be successful, his study missed two Nobel Laureates who did not make the IQ cut: William Shockley, who co-invented the transistor, and physicist Luis Alvarez. Neither of them had high enough IQs to make it into Terman's study but it was their original thinking that eventually set them apart from their more intelligent peers.

While intelligence may not be the defining factor, what genius does seem to require is unusually high levels of creativity and perseverance.

This can be seen in Australia's own genius, Barry Marshall, who won the Nobel prize in Medicine in 2005 for discovering that stomach ulcers were caused by bacteria and not stress.

Marshall and hospital pathologist Robin Warren believed ulcers were linked to bacteria but could not prove this as lab mice were not impacted, and they were not allowed to experiment on people. At the time scientists believed there was a link between ulcers, stress and acid.

In desperation, Prof Marshall mixed up some of the bacteria in a broth and drank it. After a few days he was proved correct - he had given himself an ulcer, and proved that antibiotics could be used to cure the condition.

"Ultimately creativity is an act of rebellion," Prof Snyder told news.com.au.

"You have to be downright subversive to be creative and you must have the courage to broadcast your ideas to a resistant world."

Prof Snyder is interested in the study of creativity and the qualities that make someone a champion.

"In the most general sense, what distinguishes a "champion" from the rest is not the desire to be the best, or a fear of failure, rather it's an unconscious abhorrence of being just average," Prof Snyder said. "It's wanting to pour something uniquely you into your work."

Creativity and genius have been linked ever since the "cult of genius" first emerged in 18th century Europe and America, says Professor McMahon, author of Divine Fury: A History of Genius.

As commercial society evolved, the concept of being a "genius" dramatised the power of uniqueness and innovation in science, enterprise and the arts, he suggests in an opinion piece for Slate.

Companies such as Apple have used this idea of being "unique" to brand its products in the aura of genius, for example as part of its Think Different advertising campaign, aimed at the "crazy ones, the misfits, rebels and troublemakers, the round pegs in square holes" who have "no respect for the status quo".

Apple's think different ad, narrated by Steve Jobs.

But Prof McMahon argues that perhaps more than any other virtue, the one that quality that genius possess, was an ability to work and never let a problem go.

He points to a scene in The Theory of Everything that seems to illustrate this quality, when physicist Stephen Hawking is depicted attempting to pull his deadweight body up the stairs of his house, showing his capacity for "tenaciously pursuing something over the long term".

He refused to give up: Physicist Stephen Hawking. Picture: Guillermo Granja Source: AFP

While this quality can appear sometimes to be stubbornness or obsession, it is what can separate genius from intelligence, Prof McMahon writes.

As Thomas Edison, the man who invented the light bulb, famously said: "Genius is 1 per cent inspiration and 99 per cent perspiration".

"Sweating, it turns out, is the first virtue of genius," Prof McMahon concludes.

Oh, to be a new mum at 51

Tracey Kahn used IVF to conceive both her children. Source: News Corp Australia

Tracey Kahn, the single Manhattan career mum who got pregnant at the advanced age of 51, has safely delivered a bouncing baby daughter named Eloise Becket Kahn.

"I'm beyond thrilled, the happiest I've been in my life," says the go-getting publicist who had her first child, Scarlett, now 2, after IVF treatment when she was 49. "I have this great, perfect family!

"I'm feeling super healthy, and the baby is beautiful," she told the New York Post.

The successful Upper East Side businesswoman announced her controversial pregnancy in The Post in September 2014 in a two-page, first-person article. She revealed that, like Scarlett, the baby was the product of a donor egg and donor sperm (both from anonymous donors) and would be Scarlett's full biological sister.

Eloise was conceived via IVF at Kahn's fertility clinic, Reproductive Medicine Associates of New York, which regularly treats wannabe mums over 50.

She was born weighing a robust 7 pounds, 6 ounces at New York-Presbyterian Hospital at 10:37am on February 18.

"I was excited and anxious to give birth because she was full term, but everything went smoothly," says Kahn, who had a planned C-section and stayed in the hospital for five nights.

"Towards the end of the pregnancy, I was getting a little uncomfortable because of the extra weight, but otherwise it was pretty good," she says.

Scarlett met her little sister the following day, presenting the newborn with a card decorated with hearts and kisses.

"At first she was a deer caught in headlights, but now she absolutely adores her," adds Kahn. "I'm so glad I was able to give her a sibling who'll be with her for the rest of her life."

Meanwhile, the petite mum, who is breastfeeding, has employed a $350-a-day baby nurse for at least the next three months who will join the full-time nanny watching Scarlett.

"I've worked very hard my whole life to afford this situation, so why not?" says Kahn, dismissing any claims she won't be a hands-on mum. Employed by a high-profile jeweller, she even worked Oscars night from her hospital bed, just four days after giving birth.

Now, looking to the future, she is confident that, despite her age, the children will enjoy a loving, comfortable childhood and adulthood.

"There are so many positive things to having a baby this late in life," adds Kahn. "Yes, I'm older, but I'm in great shape. I have a great head on my shoulders, with a great system of friends.

"It's about quality and how you raise your children and the decisions you make."

Next up on her to-do list? Meeting a husband.

"Would I love to get married and give my daughters a father one day? Absolutely. That's next on my bucket list!" she says, with a laugh before adding, "My two children are extremely lucky and so am I. If anybody asked me whether I'd do it all again, I wouldn't change a thing."

This story originally appeared on the New York Post.

The terrifying weapon of the future

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 26 Februari 2015 | 03.29

Okay, so it might not look quite like this, but its damage will be similar. Source: News Limited

IT SOUNDS more like something from a Matthew Reilly book than real life. But programmable bioweapons are coming and scientists are warning that they could be just as, if not more deadly than nuclear weapons.

The weapons use something known as synthetic biology, which is a bit like genetic engineering on steroids. Basically, it involves reprogramming genes to do specific things. Already scientists are working to use synthetic biology to create plants that can sniff out drugs at airports.

But a panel of academic experts at the New America Future of War conference overnight have warned that weapons made using synthetic biology could be as big of a problem as nuclear weapons were in the past.

"The biologically-based conflicts of the future would be wild by comparison: I'll wipe out your food supply, I'll wipe out your water, I'll wipe out your ability to reproduce, I'll wipe out your ability for your gene line to advance." said Michael Crow, president of Arizona State University.

"We have to figure out some way to rethink this stuff before we can no longer think about it," he said.

The United States' equivalent of Australia's defence technology research agency DSTO, DARPA has been researching the possibility to use synthetic biology for warfare for years, and even started a dedicated division in 2014 called the Biological Technologies Office.

Their research has been nothing less than terrifying.

In 2011, DARPA began investing money into a project called BioDesign. Its goal was to create a "synthetic organism" that can live forever, or if need be, killed off with the flick of a molecular switch. These organisms can then be used to do whatever their creators want them to, or as DARPA puts it, "produce the intended biological effect."

YOU wouldn't imagine camels as the jovial types but a video showing a camel laughing hysterically may just pop that theory.

Many know about the spitting nature of camels, which they use as a defence mechanism, and when you really piss them off. But this video shows they've got all kinds of emotions.

OSCAR winner Eddie Redmayne is fast becoming the new prince of Hollywood — and it turns out he also went to school with royalty.

Redmayne, who picked up the Best Actor Oscar for The Theory Of Everything, became mates with Prince William when they went to boarding school together in England in the 1990s.

They both attended Eton College, and were members of "Pop" — a group of elected prefects at the school.

Pictures of the two from their school days have been getting shared around on social media.

Redmayne says they were on the same rugby team in 1997 — and told Glamour magazine he felt sorry for the prince because he copped it harder than the others.

"He's a wonderful man," he said.

"I always felt slightly sorry for him because everyone wanted to tackle the future king of England. He took all the hits."

He says he hasn't seen the prince since school but calls him a "lovely man".

Daughter ate pie as mum lay dead

Forensic officers and police at the Alick St, Cabramatta home where Aminda Huynh found her mother's body in 2012 Source: News Limited

THE night Aminda Huynh's mother died, the young woman returned home from work and began cooking dinner, texting friends and watching television.

It was all very mundane, the crown says, except that she hadn't realised her mum was lying in a pool of blood in the home's front room.

Tony Thao Do has pleaded not guilty to murdering his 54-year-old wife Kim Lien Huynh who died in September 2012 from a combination of neck compression and sharp and blunt force injuries to her head.

Speaking at the opening day of Do's trial, crown prosecutor Nicole Noman SC said Aminda had returned to her family's Cabramatta home in Sydney's southwest about 8.30pm on September 13.

The 22-year-old didn't turn on any lights in the front of the house as she made her way into the kitchen.

She cooked chicken pie, showered, fed the dogs, texted her sister and boyfriend and watched TV.

It wasn't until hours later when she turned on the light in the home's stairway to let the dogs out that she could see into the front room for the first time, the Supreme Court heard today.

"She saw her mother, she saw blood."

Aminda called Triple-0 at about 12.13am but there was nothing paramedics could do when they arrived.

Do, having received a call from his stepdaughter, arrived home soon after.

He told police Ms Huynh had left their strata management business that afternoon while he had stayed at the shop.

Kim Huynh's body is removed from her Cabramatta home in September 2012 Source: News Limited

Hours after this conversation, on September 14, he tried to kill himself, Ms Noman said.

It wasn't until he was released from hospital almost a week later that Do gave another interview with police.

This time, Do said he had come home on September 13 and discovered his wife on the floor.

Thinking she had "fainted or fallen" he tried to pick her up, walking through blood as he did so, Ms Noman said.

Scared someone was still inside the house, he said he washed his hands and feet in the bathroom sink and then walked back to their shop and hid under a blanket.

"The footprints of the accused were located in blood around Kim's body," Ms Noman said.

Ms Noman said the pair had married in 2011 after they met online and Do had moved from America to Australia.

By the time of Ms Huynh's death, they were no longer sharing a bed, she said.

But Do's barrister Craig Smith SC said his client did not kill his wife.

"He left a suicide note. It was about missing the person he loved, not the person he killed."

The trial continues.

Is MKR’s Adam Andersen a ‘deadbeat dad’?

In A Current Affair exclusive report, Adam Anderson stands accused of not paying thousands of dollars in child support and turning his back on his five young children. Courtesy: ACA

CHANNEL Nine's A Current Affair has lobbed a bombshell at its TV rival, Seven — with the ex-wife of a My Kitchen Rules contestant claiming he's a "deadbeat dad."

Former tennis pro Adam Andersen was at the centre of allegations by his first wife Cindy that he owes his five children more than $36,000 in support payments and has had

limited contact with them since remarrying his MKR partner, Carol Molloy.

Andersen, who was a highly competitive contestant during round two of MKR's instant restaurants, was accused of blocking the phone calls of his ex and two daughters; as well as squibbing on an alleged deal to pay half of his family's school fees.

The explosive story also claimed Andersen has personal ties with MKR judge Pete Evans — with his ex-wife stating Evans was coached by her former husband, then later employed him to work the door at Evan's former eatery, Hugo's in Kings Cross.

It is understood Pete Evans has refuted claims he's ever been coached by Andersen, while a source pointed out Hugo's is now owned by Evan's brother, Dave.

Cindy told ACA reporter Brady Halls the father of their five children — aged 8 to 15 — had dodged child maintenance for the past 12-13 months.

Despite spruiking to Seven and NewsCorp Australia that he was a tennis coach at private schools — including guiding teams for Shore, Grammar and Wenona Girls College — Andersen had allegedly been pursued for payment unsuccessfully by the Child Support Agency.

Cindy told Halls "the children have no emotional support, nothing. They don't receive a card in the mail (for their birthdays) ...".

She said seeing him boast about his happy relationship and claim on MKR's website his children "visited as often as they can" had "sickened me."

Suspicion ... MKR contestants Carol Molloy and Adam Anderson, with Robert and Lynzey Murphy. Picture: Supplied. Source: Supplied

Her greatest support came from her terminally ill father who she feared would die unsure whether his grandchildren would be looked after financially.

The single mother produced a copy of a letter allegedly sent to Channel Seven asking for confirmation Andersen was being paid by the network, so she could make arrangements to have his child support debt "garnished" from his TV wages.

(All reality TV contestants are paid some appearance money, regardless of any prizes won).

Cindy said the system of recovering money from delinquent parents was "flawed and even when there's someone (on TV) they still can't access money for the children."

News Corp is seeking comment from Andersen.

A Channel Seven spokesperson said: "Production did not receive the letter. This is a private matter between the parties involved, therefore Channel Seven has no further comment."

Bali Nine death island transfer looms

FOUR Indonesian Air Force Sukhoi fighters jets have arrived in Bali for what is believed to be a mission to fly in protective support when Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran are transferred to the prison island of Nusakambangan.

Details are not clear, but is understood that the condemned Australians could be shifted in a matter of days.

It is thought Chan and Sukumaran will be flown from Denpasar under guard on two long-range helicopters direct to the prison island on the south coast Java, or by a fixed-wing aircraft to Jogjakarta or Cilacap, the mainland city right alongside Nusakambangan.

Their presence is part of a display of intent by the Indonesian authorities who have stated that they will not tolerate any outside interference in the executions.

Indonesia's supreme army boss General Moeldoko said on Friday that he was ordering special forces and weapons systems to be in place for the transfer, because "the military deeply understands the possibilities of threats".

General Moeldoko claimed he was not talking about any specific country, but relations between Indonesia and Australia have deteriorated badly over the planned executions.

Real Housewives: ‘What does this b*tch have?’

The birds are back: Gamble Breaux, Chyka Keebaugh, Jackie Gillies, Gina Liano, Lydia Schiavello, Janet Roach, Pettifleur Berenger. Source: News Corp Australia

REAL Housewives of Melbourne is back, with ribbon-twirling, terrified housekeepers and a love triangle involving a pig, all in the first episode. But is new Housewife Gamble hiding a scandalous secret?

Strap yourselves in, folks: the second season of Real Housewives of Melbourne is off and away.

But before we get stuck in, we need to pour one out for a dearly departed homie. Yes, we're talking about Andrea, the nanny-terrorising, list-making aspiring self-help mogul who, after being crucified for her shady antics last season, wisely decided not to return for another round of Real Housewives.

Every show needs a villain and truth be told, Andrea played the role perfectly. Joni Mitchell was right: you don't know what you've got til it's gone. Andrea, we hope you're in a better place (Actually, we know you are — you're in Toorak).

Both new Housewives have successfully completed the mandatory pre-season short course on sassy hand-on-hip posing. Source: Supplied

Housewifekeeping out of the way, on to season two … And the Housewives each have a cringe-worthy new opening title catchphrase!

The most perplexing of the lot has to be Gina's "I deal in fact … NOT friction," which makes us wonder if she's gunning for a lucrative personal lubricant sponsorship.

We get our first glimpse of the two new improbably-monikered Housewives, who both use their opening credit sequences to dabble in wordplay worthy of Shakespeare himself:

Gamble Breaux: "Gamble on me, and you're SURE to win." BECAUSE HER NAME IS GAMBLE DO YOU SEE?!?!

Pettifleur Berenger: "THIS little flower is NO shrinking violet." BECAUSE HER NAME IS FLEUR DO YOU SEE?!?!

Housewives introduced, the season starts with a catch-up lunch for Jackie, Chyka and Jackie — whose crimped hair is giving us a real J-Lo vibe.

You just KNOW there's a bottle or two of La Mascara secreted in her handbag. Source: Supplied

Jackie's stunned that the other two ladies are looking so svelte, complimenting them both on their between-season weight loss.

What's their secret? Lydia says she's refined her eating habits lately but she still averages "eight coffees a day". For a woman who — and you'll forgive us for making this assumption — probably has no real need to get out of bed before about 2pm, that's an awful lot of caffeine.

Before long, Lydia's on to her trademark sex talk (YASSSS). Chyka says eight coffees a day would make her heart pound, to which Lydia responds "My heart's used to getting pounded." (You're definitely doing sex wrong, Lydia).

When Jackie suggests they start their meal off with a tequila shot — it being, ooh, I don't know, 10am — Lydia has another drink in mind:

We're barely two minutes into the new season and Lydia's already working blue. How long until she mounts a helicopter? Source: Supplied

Oh Lydia, we've missed that razzed-up spirit of yours. You make Fifty Shades of Grey look like a Mother and Son marathon.

Janet soon phones in to the lunch from her Porsche, telling the girls she's been spending some time with a man named Carlos, who Chyka imagines is probably "Italian, suave, naughty, a bit of fun — right up Janet's alley." Without friction, we hope.

Janet's called in to tell the girls she's having a birthday party, and while she's inviting the rest of the Housewives, she's reticent about inviting Gina given their 'frenemy' status. AND WE'RE OFF. They'll be throwing around pearlers like 'lower your testosterone' and 'insignificant arse hair' before the episode is out, mark my words.

An aside: Janet's been set up weirdly in her first chat-to-camera of the season — rather than talking to an unseen interviewer just off camera, she looks right down the barrel of the lens. It's a little disconcerting — like watching a RealDoll in a hostage video.

"Pls send help". Source: Supplied

Janet's off to meet up with the Carlos over lunch. Is he an improvement on the leather necklace-wearing dude she hooked up with last season? We'll let you be the judge.

We swear we tried to take a flattering screenshot. Source: Supplied

Turns out Carlos and Janet aren't dating — yet. He's actually helping her organise her birthday party, but he's got some bad news: they're going to have to change the venue. She's not happy, but Carlos diffuses the situation by complimenting the eternally up-for-it Janet on her "beauty, depth and intelligence." She may have a bit of a thing for this younger man, but don't worry guys — she totally plays it cool in the face of his flirting.

*jaw unhinges* Source: Supplied

Back at lunch with the girls, Lydia hops on the phone to make sure her personal assistant is managing her big assignment for the day: buying shampoo.

"Go and buy your own bloody shampoo!" Jackie From The Block barks.

"I don't have time," Lydia shrugs, as her weekday lunch approaches its fourth hour.

To be fair, Lydia's got a busy day ahead of her: She's got to take her dog Figaro — the most pampered yet miserable soul this side of Britney Spears — to an appointment.

"What, to buy him a dress?" Jackie says.

"EWW, dress? He's not gay," Lydia scoffs, alienating approximately 99 per cent of the Real Housewives fanbase in an instant.

"I mean, I LOVE gay," she corrects herself, "but he's not."

"I love gay" is probably our favourite syntax-free Lydia-ism since "Are they pant?" Great save, Lydia — you'll have your own Mardi Gras float before you know it.

Continuing her preparty prep, Janet visits her hairdresser, Patrick, who's looking a little … different to last season. Like, 'Growing out my Posh Spice bob, don't wanna talk about it' different.

Would you trust this man to cut your hair? Source: Supplied

While Patrick attends to her hair, ignoring his own, Janet calls Gina to invite her to the party.

Ah, Gina. Our first glimpse of this olive-skinned lioness, some 16 minutes into the episode, is a classic. It appears the producers have dropped her off somewhere in Melbourne's outer suburbs solely so they can film her while she struts her stuff next to a shop awning emblazoned with a sign saying 'The bitch is back.' #symbolism #miseenscene

For this shot alone, give Real Housewives ALL THE LOGIES. Source: Supplied

Gina's catching up with her sister Bettina, having just got back from Los Angeles where she's been visiting her Geographically Impossible Partner, Dean. She drops a bombshell: she's planning on moving to LA (at this very moment, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills feel a collective chill down their avian spines).

Chatting to her sister, Gina makes an off-the-cuff joke about Janet's upcoming birthday being her 85th. We know how this show works now, so let us make a little season two finale prediction: Janet and Gina will argue at length about whether Gina really called Janet old in episode one, as the other Housewives watch on disinterestedly, waiting for their respective book deals to be finalised. In the car park outside, Andrea will loiter with intent before being moved on by security.

As her party preparations continue, Janet pops into a cake shop. Surrounded by dozens upon dozens of cakes, she informs the owner that she's planning a birthday party. His sincere response is perhaps the best line of the episode:

"DON'T TELL ME! You need a cake."

Watch out Jackie Gillies, your position as RHOM's resident psychic may be under threat.

"I'm sorry Janet, we don't sell cakes here … TRICK! Oh, I crack me up. What's it like outside? I've never left this shop." Source: Supplied

Sitting down to discuss what sort cake Janet should order for her birthday, the baker uses all his best upselling techniques to flog Janet the most expensive creation he possibly can, literally scoffing in her face when she meekly asks how much it will all cost.

Her response to this heavy-handed salesmanship? A slightly desperate, "Would YOU like to come to my party?"

Janet, you're breaking our hearts.

It's party time, and the Housewives travel in pairs to the big event. In Jackie and Chyka's car, the mood is buoyant, with the pair caught up in a cacophony of girl-talk and clinking champagne glasses. Over in Gina and Lydia's car, the atmosphere is … frostier.

*tumbleweed* **but, like, a really fancy tumbleweed with rhinestones and a fake tan** Source: Supplied

After what feels like about three years of increasingly tense silence, these two old friends break the ice.

Gina: "How's [husband] Andrew?"

Lydia: "He's goo-"

Gina: "WELL I heard you two separated. From two different sources. Independently. THREE, actually."

Lydia: "NUP."

We would have no qualms about jumping from this moving vehicle and rolling under the nearest bus. Sweet relief.

At the party, Janet announces that a new Housewife, Gamble, will be joining the fun.

"Her real name is Gamble, she's had it since birth, she IS a real person," Janet insists, helpfully nipping any scurrilous 'Gamble-is-actually-a-Roomba-in-a-wig' gossip in the bud before it even starts.

So, here's how we're introduced to Gamble Breaux. She lives in Mount Eliza, where she spends her days:

a) Sprawled on a rug in front of her fireplace grooming her teacup Pomeranian:

DREAM LYF Source: Supplied

b) Practicing her ribbon-twirling (it's a real sport, haters back off) by the pool:

DREAM. GODDAMN. LYF Source: Supplied

c) Chilling on her yacht with the elderly eye surgeon squeeze she met on E-Harmony:

She bagged a surgeon with a yacht? Last time we met a guy off the internet we had our own episode of Catfish Source: Supplied

During this intro package — the fabulousness of which will only truly be understood by future generations studying the greatest achievements of the 21st century — Gamble reveals she used to be a model in Singapore. As mysterious backstories go, this is up there with Regina George's "I hear she does car commercials in Japan".

Back to reality. Gamble rocks up at the party and immediately puts her foot in it with Jackie when she asks how long she's been working as a psychic: "Twelve years? Oh, I thought you were just mucking around!"

Jackie takes the dis well, mind you.

"Some of the other ladies might not like her straightforwardness, but you know … life's one big Gamble." Season two drinking game: Do a shot every time somebody awkwardly shoehorns a 'Gamble' pun into a sentence. Be sure to pre-book your ambulance.

Next, Janet heralds Gina's arrival at the party with the following announcement: "Ohhhh, attention everyone! Stage right! Drag queen has entered the building!"

Gamble's response suggests she's got a lot to learn about this show.

Yeah that's the point, babes. Source: Supplied

Gamble and Gina start chatting, and — surprise, surprise — they instantly get on.

"Gina is so gorgeous! If I was gay I'd turn for her," Gamble gushes. Wait, so if you were a lesbian you'd turn straight for her? This is confusing.

We're then introduced to the second new housewife, Pettifleur, who's depicted in her introduction package standing on her balcony high above Melbourne, sipping from an antique teacup and plotting world domination like some sort of campy Batman villain.

"One day, all this will be mine. First against the wall: anyone who doesn't like my snakeskin coat." Source: Supplied

Pettifleur was born in Sri Lanka and came to Australia as a teenager, carving out a successful career in property development. She lives in a swanky Collins Street penthouse with her partner, her sons, and — wait a minute! Could this be?

Who'd going to launch the Kickstarter to free Leah from Pettifleur's penthouse? Source: Supplied

YES!

The part of 'put-upon housekeeper' in Real Housewives season two will apparently be played by Pettifleur's harangued houseslave, Leah. Or, as Pettifleur calls her, as if summoning a disobedient pet: "LE-ARRR! LE-ARRR! LE-ARRR!"

Back at Janet's party, Pettifleur makes quite the entrance — and she knows it. Here's how she sizes up the other Housewives:

"I know they're all thinking: What does this fabulous bitch have?"

Making small talk with her new pals, Pettifleur fills Jackie and Gina in on her background: While Sri-Lankan born, she's also got Swiss, Dutch and Portuguese heritage.

"So, what language do you actually speak?" Jackie asks the woman she's been speaking English to all evening.

Pettifleur, stony-faced: "English."

Jackie appears confused.

Party over, the episode finishes with a scene that seems more suited to Twin Peaks than Real Housewives. The next day, Janet meets Carlos for a little day-date in the park, where he's walking his … dog? Guess again.

Carlos tenderly caresses Janet's competition. Source: Supplied

Carlos is the proud owner of a giant pet pig, who he's dressed rather saucily in a feathered, flapper-style headband. Ignoring horrified looks from passers by who just don't understand their love, Carlos whispers tender words in his companion-swine's ear.

"Gorgeous girl … you're looking like a real lady today."

Carlos just got a LOT more interesting.

Janet tries not to look shocked that her date with Carlos comes with a big side of bacon, but her resolve is tested when he casually drops into the conversation that he and his four-legged lady friend usually sleep in the same bed.

But Janet doesn't have time to contemplate a polyamorous relationship involving a 1920s jazz-pig — she's got bigger issues on her mind. Namely, she's finding it hard to move past some "not very nice gossip" she's heard about Gamble's mysterious past.

"Mmm, I've heard many stories about Gamble," Carlos confirms.

The words 'Singapore modelling career' suddenly sound rather sinister …

Next week: Janet confronts Gamble about the 'many stories' she's heard.

Anti-Australian backlash in Indonesia

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 21 Februari 2015 | 03.30

Indonesia has responded to Tony Abbott's comments on the Bali Nine, saying 'threats' are not diplomatic.

Didn't go down well ... Tony Abbott reminded Indonesia about the tsunami aid they received from Australia in an effort to save Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan from death. Picture: AFP/Jewel Samad Source: Supplied

AN ANTI-AUSTRALIAN backlash has begun in Indonesia's Aceh province in response to Tony Abbott's controversial tsunami aid comments.

Groups of young people and activists have started a social media campaign, with the hashtag #KoinUntukAustralia or coins for Australia and posts have been set up for angry Acehnese to give coins and money as a symbol of returning the aid.

INDONESIA PREPARES" Weapons mobilised to combat Bali Nine 'threats'

Abbott's comments, that Australia gave $1 billion in aid to Indonesia following the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami have angered many in the province who say that humanitarian aid and law are different things.

ABBOTT TO INDONESIA: Let's not forget about the $1b tsunami aid

Anger is growing amid the suggestions that the aid money can now be used as a bargaining chip in trying to save the lives of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.

Acehnese have begun posting photographs of coins, with the words coins for Australia next to them and one tweet shows a group of Acehnese all putting money into a cardboard box, saying "Aceh people happily try to return your money @TonyAbbottMHR".

The comments have inflamed tensions, even among those who believe Chan and Sukumaran deserve a second chance. In the wake of the comments Foreign Minister Julie Bishop called the Indonesian Vice President Yusuf Kalla.

The coin for Australia co-ordinator, Martunus, told News Corporation that the idea was conceived after Friday prayers in Aceh when the group began discussing Mr Abbott's comments and the Acehnese reaction to them.

He said the Acehnese people were offended by the comments and offended that aid was being used as a bargaining tool.

"This is not about how much money that we can pay back to the Australian government. We only want to put pressure on Australia who has tried to interfere in Indonesia's law enforcement process. Indonesia will not be affected by Australian intervention," Martunus said.

"We hope that the Australian government could convey sorrow for what Abbott has said. They have to convey their apology openly, as they have offended Acehnese and Indonesian people. We never asked them to help at that time," he said.

The group includes the United Front of Indonesian Muslim Students.

Suraiya Kamaruzzaman is the president of a woman's organisation in Aceh and on the executive board at the Centre of Law and Human Rights at Syahkuala University.

She believes that the two young Australians do not deserve to die but says humanitarian assistance and criminal advocacy are two very different issues. It's not apples for apples, she says.

PM Tony Abbott says his comments on the clemency bid for the Bali Nine duo were not threats to Indonesia.

"I know that every country does the maximum to advocate for their citizens. But the statement about how Australia helped during the tsunami is not relevant. It's really two different things," Ms Kamaruzzaman said.

"The tsunami was an extraordinary humanitarian disaster, where all countries in the world with their own ability, helped us. Not on call.

"We didn't asked them to help. But it doesn't mean that because of that, Australia now can use that to save the Bali Nine. It is wrong, in my opinion."

"That Australia is attempting to save the life of their citizens, I do support them. Indeed, the State must protect their citizens. And it should be a model for us when doing advocacy for our citizens overseas. But when they use the tsunami aid to ask Indonesia not to execute their citizens, it is not apple to apple," she said.

Show of gratitude ... Mothers for Mercy bring buckets of flowers for The Jail Governor and staff of Kerobokan jail for looking after Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran. Picture: Lukman Bintoro Source: News Corp Australia

"I mean, the execution must be cancelled, but not because Australia has given the aid. It is not related. For me, I do not agree with the death sentence."

Ms Kamaruzzaman said she was not aware of any data which shows that the death penalty reduces crime.

"We should also remember that in our justice system, the judge is also a human being. It is very possible the judge makes a mistake. It is risky, moreover with our legal system in Indonesia where it is proven that several cases could be 'bought'. Even a judge of constitutional court, Akil Mochtar, was arrested for corruption. This is very risky.

Waiting for news ... Family continue to visit Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan. Pictured here Raji Sukumaran and brother Chintu. Picture: Lukman Bintoro Source: News Corp Australia

"If there is a mistake on deciding the case, and the convicted have been executed, what do we have to do?" she asked.

And Ms Kamaruzzaman pointed out inequities in the system. One of the drug traffickers executed on January 18 this year was a woman called Rani Indriani, a drug courier. Her aunt was a co-accused in the crime and she got clemency and a reprieve from the President but Rani was shot dead.

"This is an example that makes me more insistent on rejecting the death penalty," she said.

Marcia’s devastation from the air

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says now

A damaged house remains standing after Tropical Cyclone Marcia hit the coastal town of Yeppoon. Source: AFP

* Cyclone Marcia has been downgraded to a tropical low but many residents endured a damp and dark night with thousands left without electricity.

* Power is expected to be cut for several days and emergency services are calling on residents to use water only when absolutely necessary.

* The severe tropical cyclone made landfall as a category 5 cyclone and has left a trail of destruction over Yeppoon and Rockhampton.

*The cyclone was at category 5 when it grazed Yeppoon battering the coastal town with 285km/h winds. It was downgraded to category 3 when it hit Rockhampton in the afternoon.

* Marcia's destructive core with gusts to 155km/h continued southward towards Biloela.

* In the Northern Territory, Cyclone Lam made landfall as a category 4 system and has now been downgraded to a tropical low.

AS IT HAPPENED: CYCLONE MARCIA ATTACKS

THE clean-up is beginning across Queensland in the wake of Cyclone Marcia. And boy, is there a lot of work to do.

Making matters worse is the news that looting has followed the cyclone's path of destruction.

Two boys aged 14 and 16 and a young man aged 17 have been charged after allegedly breaking into a Yeppoon bottleshop overnight, The Courier Mail have reported.

Police allege that officers patroling the streets found the three males in possession of 11 bottles of alcohol, allegedly obtained from a bottleshop on Rockhampton Rd in Yeppoon.

All three have been charged with one count of entering a premise to commit an indictable offence, while the 14-year-old was also charged with stealing.

Additional police resources have been brought into Yeppoon and Rockhampton for security reasons following the cyclone. Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk also announced earleir today that army troops were on their way to Rockhampton and Yeppoon to begin the clean-up effort.

"Once again I ask the communities to please be patient with us," Ms Palaszczuk told media this afternoon.

"The Ergon crews are out there and working as hard as they possibly can - already they've cleared the dangerous power lines from the streets but now the real work is to restore that power and over the coming days and weeks power will be restored - but patience is needed.

"We've been in contact with the (Australian Defence Force) and a deployment will be coming from Townsville to the area where troops will be distributed between Rockhampton and Yeppoon," the Premier said.

Meawhile, a new weather threat is emerging.

The weather bureau has issued warnings for severe thunderstorms from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast while another thunderstorm developed near Caloundra.

There has already been one waterspout seen on the Sunshine Coast and more were likely throughout southeast Queensland later today.

Residents of Brisbane and the Gold Coast have been bracing for more bad weather today with winds as high as 90km/h possible and heavy rain.

Late this morning, the weather bureau revised down the amount of rainfall expected in the southeast from 300mm to 125mm.

The rain warnings stretch as far south as the north coast of NSW, where there is a chance of flash flooding.

More than 60 SES teams remain on standby and are handing out sandbags with further rain and damaging winds expected to hit mid north-coast today, Sky News reported.

At least 60,000 homes are without power.

There are flood fears as the clean up from Cyclone Marcia continues. Source: News Corp Australia

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Matthew Bass told a press conference this morning that there was potential for water tornadoes in southeast Queensland.

There has already been one report of a waterspout on the Sunshine Coast.

"We could see a couple more of these events as this system moves south along the coast they will be very localised," Mr Bass said.

Several dams in Queensland were already overflowing however there were no fears the Wivenhoe Dam upstream of Brisbane would overflow.

On the Sunshine Coast, 42 people have been evacuated amid fears of flash flooding although authorities insist it is just a precautionary measure.

Winds could still reach 90km/h in southeast Queensland today — but that is far below what residents in central Queensland faced yesterday.

One Yeppoon resident told Sky News the damage was "like a bomb going off".

Winds ripped off roofs, blew out windows and sent large trees crashing through walls. Some homes in Yeppoon were completely destroyed.

Tony and Vicki Harris saw their neighbour's home on the corner of John and Vaughan streets in Yeppoon lift up and slam into their home, smashing apart the veranda.

A large section of the Harris's' roof was also torn off and rain soaked their lounge room.

"We heard all these bangs, the neighbour lost his roof and the next minute I could see the sky through mine," Mr Harris told the Courier Mail.

The local Mayor, Bill Ludwig, said the damage would be in the "multi-millions".

Today an army of volunteers were helping their friends and neighbours clean up in Yeppoon, which is without power.

Leanne Smith, whose daughter and two grandchildren, aged 7 and 11, were evacuated from their home, told AAP she couldn't believe what was left when she returned to survey the damage.

"I was actually really emotionally affected by it," Ms Smith said.

"It's just not something you can really explain to people, it's actually quite devastating."

A charity mobile laundry service, Orange Sky Laundry, also pulled up to help the family wash clothes for free.

Co-founder Lucas Patchett said the service, which usually helps homeless people, was also used in disaster situations.

"We drove around a bit, saw some news crews up here and thought it must be a badly affected area, so just turned up and offered to wash and dry people's clothes," he said

Two Queensland towns have been cut off after a "wall of water" from the first cyclone to hit in 40 years wrecked havoc.

Residents in northeastern NSW are bracing for heavy rains and flooding in the wake of Cyclone Marcia.

Residents of Biloela and the nearby village of Jambin are cut off this morning, with flood levels rising in the wake of Cyclone Marica.

Gates at Callide Dam opened Friday night and spilt a "wall of water" downstream to Jambin, causing urgent evacuations of outlying properties.

Banana Shire Mayor Ron Carige said: "I've never seen anything like it before."

Police have renewed their warning for motorists not to ignore road closure signs as they could be protecting travellers from washouts, craters and other hazards, and not to attempt to cross flooded roads, causeways or water courses.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said authorities would have a better picture of the impact today.

Clean up to begin after Queensland faced the full brunt of tropical Cyclone Marcia.

"We'll have helicopters in the area and also there is a request in with the Australian Defence Force and they will also be carrying out an assessment of the damage in the areas around Rockhampton and Yeppoon."

State Emergency Services Assistant Commissioner Peter Jeffrey warned about being complacent this morning.

"Don't be lulled into a false sense of security ... We need to be vigilant and prepared."

Mr Jeffrey said a full assessment of the damage would begin as crews moved into the worst damaged area, mainly around Yeppoon and Rockhampton.

There had already been 4500 calls to SES for help.

In Rockhampton though it appears people don't just have fuelling their cars on their minds.

Abbott’s dog fights puppy farming

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 19 Februari 2015 | 03.30

Challenge ... Tony Abbott's dog challenges the Prime Minister's popularity in a new campaign against puppy farming. Picture: YouTube. Source: YouTube

IT may look like your run-of-the mill political social media campaign, but unlike the usual convention of using a human spokesman to spearhead the movement in question, this one is lead by … a dog.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott's dog, to be more precise. Her name is Maisie Abbott, and her mission in life is to speak out against the horrible abuses suffered by her kind at the hands of puppy farms.

And she is taking advantage of her master's plunge in popularity to do it.

Or so says Oscar's Law, an animal welfare group that aims to abolish factory farming, which has launched an anti-puppy campaign with a difference — trying to make the prime minister's dog more popular than the prime minister himself.

Bizarre ... A new campaign against puppy farming, featuring Prime Minister Tony Abbott's dog, has been launched. Picture: YouTube. Source: YouTube

"The Maisie Abbott campaign really appealed to me because I knew it would reach a certain audience — an audience that we haven't reached yet maybe," Oscar's Law founder and spokeswoman, Debra Tranter, told News Corp Australia.

"I know that a lot of the graphic photos of the farms don't always work — they disengage some people, and make them feel hopeless and disempowered".

"I don't want to make people feel like that — so this is a fun and political way to reach out," she said.

Like Mr Abbott, Maisie has a Twitter (@maisie—abbott) account, which boasts almost 2000 followers.

She tweets regularly, and appears to like poking fun at Mr Abbott, often using his presence to highlight certain puppy farming issues.

She even has a video: in her "prime ministerial" address to the nation, Maisie discusses her difficulties in persuading Mr Abbott to listen to her pleas to save her friends.

Speaking to the tune of the Australian national anthem, Maicie introduces herself: "Hi, I'm Maisie, Tony Abbott's pet dog, and I'm on a mission to get Tony to end puppy factories," she begins.

"So far, all my attempts to get Tony's attention have failed (insert picture of a poo) — but if there's one thing that Tony takes notice off, it's his popularity.

"So I'm launching a social media campaign to see if I can get more followers than him.

"It's Maisie versus Tony".

The social media campaign also includes a Facebook page, which has 4740 'likes'.

The campaign is the brainchild of advertising agency Droga5, who decided to pitch their idea directly to Ms Tranter.

Executive director of Droga5, Steve Coll, said the idea of humour may seem "at odds" with the seriousness of the issue, but that it "felt very Australian".

"The notion that the most important man in the country could be upstaged by his dog was sure to get Tony Abbott's attention," Mr Coll told News Corp Australia.

"And animal welfare is such an important issue, especially in light of the greyhound controversy."

Horror ... Maisie Abbott educated people about puppy farms in campaign video. Picture: YouTube. Source: YouTube

Ms Tranter said she hoped the campaign would bring the issue to the attention of federal ministers, "even though I know it is a state issue".

"The federal government can influence the policy in this field," she said.

The campaign video — which was launched the Friday before the federal spill vote against Mr Abbott — comes just before the shocking revelations of using piglets, possums and rabbits as live bait within the greyhound racing industry, aired on ABC's Four Corners earlier this week.

Since then an inquiry has been launched into the practices of the industry, resulting in 10 people in NSW, including eight trainers, standing down, and potentially facing charges over allegations they were involved in "blooding" greyhounds.

A further six people are under investigation.

As to whether Maisie will indeed supersede her famous master, it only remains to be seen.

So far, Mr Abbott has more than 449,000 followers on Twitter — Maisie certainly has her work cut out for her.

FIERCE winds have torn trees out by their roots and hundreds of families have fled their homes as a "cyclone sandwich" approaches the north of Australia.

WHAT WE KNOW:

* Cyclone Lam near the Northern Territory is category 4 (and intensifying) and Cyclone Marcia off the Queensland coast will strengthen into a category 5 cyclone.

* Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia is due to cross the Queensland coast between Mackay and Gladstone early on Friday morning with destructive winds with gusts of up to 295 km/h expected near the core of the system. (BoM)

* As forecast, Tropical Cyclone Lam has made a southwest turn towards land, and is expected to cross the coast near Elcho Island in the next few hours. (BoM).

* Landfall now estimated for #TCMarcia is 9am (local time) Friday morning but still as a CAT5 system (@Melbbiker).

10pm Emergency services have urged the town of St Lawrence to evacuate before Cyclone Marcia hits as a category 5 on Friday morning. @NewsTalk4BC says there is concern there will be a king tide tomorrow in Towsnville, according to @crjennyhill. BoM Qld says TC Marcia has begun moving southwest in the last hour.

8.50pm

Destructive winds are also expected to develop about coastal and island communities between Mackay and Burnett Heads on Thursday night.

The cyclone has rapidly picked up intensity, and was reclassified from a category one to category three system within four hours by the BOM on Thursday afternoon.

The bureau earlier predicted it would be upgraded again, bringing wind gusts of 260km/h at its core early Friday morning just before it makes landfall north of Yeppoon.

"At the moment it has been intensifying far more rapidly than a typical cyclone would," BOM regional director Rob Webb said.

Marcia is moving at 16km/h and is set to cross the coast somewhere between Mackay and Gladstone on Friday morning.

8.45pm

8.30pm "This is a rare situation for Queensland. We've only had two category 5 cyclones to hit the east coast of the state in recorded history," @Amy_Greenbank (Sky News Australia).

8.24pm

8.10pm: Cyclone Marcia is now due to cross as category 5 (around 8am local time), near St Lawrence in Central Qld #TCMarcia (ABCTV)

8pm The Bureau of Meteorology Qld predicts #TCMarcia will intensify to a category 5 before it makes land.

And this just in from The Bureau of Meteorology NT:

7.48pm #TCMarcia areas affected: Bowen to Double Island Point extending inland to Blackwater, Moura, Biloela, and Monto (Warning Zone) | Adjacent inland areas between Bundaberg and Double Island Point, extending inland to include Mundubbera, Gayndah, and Murgon (Watch Zone)

7.40pm #CycloneLam will make landfall as a Category 4 system, according to ABC24. Cyclone centres have been established for people in Yeppoon, Proserpine and Mackay as #TCMarcia nears (Sky News).

7.32pm Elcho Island update: Power is out on the Northern Territory island. Residents will potentially see destructive winds for another 6-12 hours as the eyewall passes closes to communities. The @BOM_NT's Ben Suter says Elcho Island is seeing gusts up to 130km/h and could increase up to 230km/h #CycloneLam

7.15pm Sky News Australia reports #CycloneLam will present very destructive winds above 200km/h over Wessel Island and will extend along the coast between Milingimbi and Gapuwiyak.

6.49pm The time to take shelter is now.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and the Bureau of Meteorology have warned Marcia's wind gusts could reach 270km/h when it makes landfall.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk held a meeting of the Disaster Management Committee at the Emergency Operations Centre in Brisbane's north on Thursday afternoon where she and several of her new ministers were briefed by emergency authorities.

"It is important all Queenslanders brace themselves for heavy rain," she said.

"This is a serious event. It has changed drastically since this morning."

The premier said the meeting's key point stressed that the safety of Queenslanders was the priority.

"Queenslanders need to be prepared now," she said.

"This is an important time now not to panic but to make sure you have your preparations in place."

"Abnormally high tides are expected today and tomorrow, with levels above the highest tide of the year with flooding of low areas likely," the Bureau said this afternoon.

"Widespread rainfall totals between 100-300mm are forecast, with the heaviest falls expected within coastal catchments. Higher localised falls are possible, as is localised flash flooding."

Cyclone Marcia is now a category three system, and is likely to be upgraded again before it hits land.

There is already no water or power in some Northern Terrority communities, where ferocious gales have already reached 140km/h - with gusts of 190km/h expected later tonight - and hundreds of residents have been evacuated.

At a press conference, the Northern Territory's acting Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw said he expected Cyclone Lam to make landfall during low tide, but was nevertheless preparing for potential flooding.

"We have a number of teams who will be ready to deploy at short notice," he said.

Emergency services are going from door-to-door in NT towns, including Maningrida, to warn of gale force winds. Four hundred people have been evacuated so far, 350 of whom have been taken to Darwin.

Earlier this afternoon, supermarket shelves were cleared in Queensland as frightened locals grabbed emergency supplies and bunkered down at their homes or at shelters in hospitals or schools.

Both cyclones are currently expected to make landfall around 3am.

"It has got really bad here now, we are losing trees all over the place," Diana Roper told ABC News Darwin from a public shelter on Elcho Island.

Coastal residents between St Lawrence and Hervey Bay in Queensland have been warned of a dangerous storm tide, with damaging waves and flooding of low-lying areas predicted.

The Bureau of Meteorology has told households to protect their properties and be ready to evacuate if advised to do so.

Marcia has been intensifying as it moves southwest through the Coral Sea towards Queensland, where it is expected to make landfall between St Lawrence and Bundaberg.

Dangerous surf is expected around the exposed beaches south of Sandy Cape, as well as thunderstorms before the cyclone hits the coast.

Heavy rainfall will develop around coastal and island communities between Mackay and Double Island Point today, with the area already on flood watch.

Meanwhile, the BoM forecasts Lam will reach category four before crossing the coast early tomorrow.

Northern Territory police confirmed today that Goulburn Island, 300km east of Darwin, was being evacuated.

At present, sustained winds near the centre have reached 140km/h, with gusts of 195km/h. Gales are forecast between Elcho Island and Nhulunbuy this morning.

Queensland is expecting its worst weather event in two years, with Marcia bringing with it the threat of wind and rainfall reminiscent of those that brought devastation in the 2011 floods, and again in 2012.

The state is bracing for a hammering with the category-two cyclone bringing floods, a tidal surge and beach erosion which is already being felt ahead of the worst of Marcia.

Beaches were closed along the coast yesterday and sandbagging had already begun last night as the tropical low loomed, and rescue crews are preparing for the worst.

Coastal residents are warned of the dangerous storm tide as the cyclone crosses the coast.

"The sea is likely to rise steadily up to a level well above the normal tide, with damaging waves and flooding of some low-lying areas close to the shoreline," a BoM statement said.

"People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to follow instructions regarding evacuation of the area if advised to do so by the authorities."

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Deputy Commissioner Mark Roche said it was vital for residents to prepare for severe weather now.

"Check your house, in particular the roof, is in good condition, keep branches clear of the house, clean gutters and clear your property of debris," Mr Roche said.

A major stretch of the Queensland coast will be saturated by heavy rain when the tropical low crosses the coast today.

Residents from St Lawrence, north of Rockhampton, to the NSW border have been warned to expect destructive winds, rough seas and abnormally high tides.

THE RAINS ARE COMING

Up to 500mm of rain is expected to fall in some areas over coming days.

But Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Commissioner Katarina Carroll said crews were well prepared.

"We've looked at the event from St Lawrence downwards, so we have got swift water rescue staff pre-positioned in many of those areas because we've got well over 200 (emergency service workers) trained for this," she said.

Authorities have repeatedly urged residents not to enter floodwaters.

QFES spokesman Peter Jeffrey said most areas would receive around 300mm rainfall, and warned winds had picked up in the past 12 hours.

"Given the current rate of progress of the cyclone we've got some opportunity to make some final preparations," he said.

"Given the speed the wind is now getting up to there's still an opportunity to make sure there's nothing loose around the back yard. Localised flooding is expected so the key message as always is if it's flooded forget it, it's too unsafe, you don't know what's going on underneath that water."

DOUBLE-PRONGED THREAT

Lam is currently rated a Category 4, but is expected to intensify before it hits. The cyclone is already powerful, with wind gusts up to 195km/h.

The cyclone is north northwest of the NT's fifth largest town of Nhulunbuy where locals have already begun queuing for essentials and emergency shelters are open.

While it is unlikely the cyclone will cross the coast at any major towns, there are a number of Aboriginal communities in the area that could face the full front of the system.

Police have warned people to stay away from waterways, to avoid driving into water of an unknown depth, to stay away from fallen powerlines, and to create their own sandbags out of whatever bags or material is at hand to stave off rising waters.

The man who REALLY runs Apple

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 18 Februari 2015 | 03.30

Sir Jonathan Ive could be Apple's most important man. Source: Supplied

APPLE doesn't often allow media through the hallowed halls of Cupertino, especially to spend time with one of its most important people.

However, late last year The New Yorker visited arguably Apple's most important employee, its design chief Jony Ive where he spoke about the past, present and gave hints for the future of Apple.

His relationship with Steve Jobs

When Jobs first came back to Apple in 1997, Ive confesses he had his resignation letter in his pocket. He assumed that with Jobs' return, a new design head would be coming in too, but the two actually hit it off to create together the best products Apple ever made.

Although they did have a great partnership, Ive didn't always agree with Jobs. In the early 2000s, Ive pushed to have the iPad released before the iPhone, but Jobs overruled him. It was argued that the iPhone could be a more familiar form for consumers to be introduced to the concept of touchscreen control. There was a similar situation with Jobs' obsession with digital versions of analog designs, such as the fake leather stitching on the iCal app. Ive hated the approach, but thought it was important for familiarity with the first iPhone.

It's very hard to become a designer at Apple

According to Ive, Apple has three specialist recruiters to find designers for the company, and they only hire once a year. The design team itself consists of 19 industrial designers from across the world who all work 12-hour days under complete secrecy, not able to discuss any of their work with anyone. Over the last 15 years only two have left the team, with one due to illness, while usually only one person gets hired every year.

Apple considered making a larger iPhone 4

Apple released its "big" iPhones at the end of last year, but the company originally planned to release larger iPhone's back in 2010 with the iPhone 4. Ive and his design team managed to design a larger iPhone 4, but it never saw the light of day after the results were deemed too "clunky" and "uncompelling".

It took Ive then another three years to settle on the screen sizes for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, carrying around different sized prototypes between 4-inches and 6-inches until the end of 2011. At first Ive liked a 5.7-inch screened device, before sleeping on it and thinking "ah, that's way too big". Of course, Apple eventually settled with 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch devices.

He likes cars, but is disappointed with what's currently on the road

As rumours begin to heat up that Apple is going to enter the car market, The New Yorker's piece reveals that both Jony Ive and his fellow Apple designer Marc Newson are both super into cars. But neither are fans of what's on the road.

"There are some shocking cars on the road," Ive said. "One person's car is another person's scenery." If Apple is actually looking to release a car, it wouldn't be surprising if Ive was to steer the design.

Jony Ive and Tim Cook both don't think Google Glass has a future

With the Apple Watch about to be released, it's no surprise that Apple's two biggest names don't like Google's Glass. Ive said that when he first saw Google Glass it was evident to him that face "was the wrong place", agreeing with Tim Cook that they were too intrusive, instead of pushing technology to the background like Apple has always believed.

On the Apple Watch

In Ive's interview, he confirmed three things. The first being that the Apple Watch was always going to be rectangular. That's because a "huge part of the function is lists," he says, so "a circle doesn't make any sense." The second being that the Apple Watch has been in development since 2011 after Ive himself finally convinced the rest of the company that a watch was a good idea for Apple. And lastly, it still needs some work. To conserve battery life, the Apple Watch's screen stays off until the user raises their wrist to look at it, but apparently Apple still has some work to do in perfecting this.

The Apple Watch and 6 Plus were both products Ive pushed for. Source: Supplied

And on top of all his work at Apple, Ive hangs with his celebrity buddies like Coldplay's Chris Martin and U2's Bono and even helped design the new lightsaber in the upcoming Star Wars film. No wonder his full name has a Sir at the start of it.

Boyfriend lost without Josie

THE boyfriend of a woman killed when crossing a busy Melbourne intersection has described the day she died as "the worst day of my life".

Drew Ridley gathered with 100 friends and family members to celebrate the short life of his girlfriend Josie Edden in Brunswick tonight.

Sitting to the side of the Code Black Coffee warehouse where mourners hugged and cried, Drew held a beer, took a breath and told of his "deeply caring" girlfriend who didn't realise how much she was loved.

"She wouldn't admit it even if she did," he said.

On Tuesday morning, Drew left Josie's house for the coffee shop where they both worked — she had left a little while earlier.

When he arrived at Code Black to find she wasn't there, he started making calls.

"Then a customer walked in and asked me if I knew what happened on Collins St," he said.

"My heart sank."

Rushing to the scene, Drew found the distraught truck driver who had earlier turned into an intersection, not realising Josie had tripped and was lying on the road.

He asked the truck driver, standing metres from where Josie lay, whether it was a woman with blonde hair who was under the tarpaulin.

It was police who later told him his girlfriend of three and a half years had died.

Drew didn't speak to the truck driver again.

But he hoped he was all right.

"I really hope he's doing OK," he said.

"No-one wants that to happen to them, it's just one of those things, just an accident."

Tonight, surrounded by their friends, both his parents and Josie's, Drew questioned how he could move on without the girl he had just started seeing again after a 12 month break, the girl who always formed her own opinions and couldn't help but take care of others.

"She took care of anyone, she didn't judge people, and she always took care of me," he said.

"I don't know what I'm going to do without her man — I don't know what I'm going to do."

Why was Steve Jobs such an a***hole?

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 17 Februari 2015 | 03.29

Steve Jobs was said to have driven many employees to tears. Source: Supplied

THE late Steve Jobs was notorious for being a prickly sort of fellow.

Yes, he was the driving force behind innovations that changed the world — someone, somewhere has surely touted him as a mini-Henry Ford. Comparisons to Thomas Edison are probably a tad hyperbolic.

But he was also, by all accounts, a bit (or a lot) of a d**k.

He was known for tearing people down in front of a whole crowd, for driving others to tears and for a generally gruff demeanour. Many wondered if underneath his genius lurked a sociopath or, at least, a megalomaniac.

Here are just some of the examples of Steve Jobs being mean:

-He once fired a whole bunch of people at Pixar without any notice. When another employee said people should be given two-weeks' notice, he reportedly replied: "Okay, but the notice is retroactive from two weeks ago".

Genius but gruff. Source: Supplied

-When its Mobile Me product tanked, he gathered the team in the Apple auditorium and asked them, "why the f**k doesn't it [do what it's supposed to do]?". He then fired the MobileMe boss on the spot, in front of everyone. Classy.

-He denied paternity of his daughter for many years, forcing her and her mother to live off welfare.

-He eliminated all philanthropy and charity programs at Apple when he took the reins back in 1997. Those programs were only reinstated after his death by successor Tim Cook.

The Atlantic's Tom McNichol said 'Bad Steve' was "petulant, rude, spiteful, and controlling, a man who thought nothing of humiliating employees, hogging the credit for work he hadn't done, throwing tantrums when he didn't get his way, or parking his Mercedes in handicapped spots."

What a charmer.

This week, Jony Ive, Apple design honcho and friend of Jobs, explained in a New Yorker profile what was behind the late acerbic tech guru's seemingly bad behaviour.

Sir Jonathan "Jony" Ive is senior vice president of design at Apple. Source: Supplied

Years ago, Mr Ive told the New Yorker, he saw Jobs crush a colleague in that Jobsian way so Mr Ive protested about the treatment.

But Jobs shot back, "Why would you want to be vague? You don't care about how they feel? You're being vain, you want them to like you." Jobs had argued that not giving clear and direct feedback was in itself a selfish move on the part of the person giving the criticism.

So there you have it. Steve Jobs was an a***hole because he wanted to be selfless.
