SEVEN'S My Kitchen Rules returned to our screens Monday night with a fresh batch of home cooks all bracing themselves for culinary battle.

We met six super competitive teams with plenty of standout characters, including a native Texan and his athlete daughter, a pair of Melbourne socialites and a couple of country cousins from Mount Isa.

The first instant restaurant of 2015 was hosted by Jac and Shaz, who hail from Queensland's mining town. Being the first cab off the rank, the ladies were understandably feeling the pressure with their menu and wanted to spice things up. But let's just say, they should have chosen, well, a spice instead.

"We are adding a little surprise to give it an edge," Shaz hinted while they were doing the grocery shopping. Can't say she didn't warn us.

The evening at Stack started out well with the new contestants exchanging pleasantries while enjoying a just as pleasant entree of zucchini and potato rosti stack with smoked salmon and crème fraîche. But from here things slowly came crumbling down, literally.

The pair's main of lamb rack with crushed potatoes and lemon green beans didn't exactly knock anyone's socks off. "Mining-sized" portions, undercooked potatoes, chewy lamb and an underwhelming sauce was not exactly what Pete Evans had in mind when he peeked at the menu.

But the big surprise turned out to be what the pair added to their pear and walnut crumble dessert. Gorgonzola. Yep, that's right, blue cheese.

Manu, who snuck into the kitchen to check on the ladies' progress, couldn't believe the stinky cheese was making its way into the sweet crumble. And, sure enough, the pungent odour was enough to put most of their guests off their final course.

Unfortunately for Jac and Shaz, the cheesy crumble was a flop all around, bringing their final mark down to a total score of 59.

"I'd be going back to basics ... don't try to be too inventive because I'd hate for this to be the reason that you go home," Pete warned.

"I don't know what went wrong, it just wasn't our night," Shaz admitted afterwards.

There are five teams left to cook and next up is Perth's Kat and Andre. Can they do any better?

MKR returns Tuesday night, 7.30pm on Seven.
