A SOUTH Australian housing organisation has come under fire over a brochure which advises indigenous people how to look after their houses the "whitefella way".

Shelter SA procured the brochure which tells people to always pay their rent and advises tenants against letting family and friends drink in the street.

Pitjantjatjara woman Keima Forbes said she outraged by the derogatory brochure and contacted the association directly to complain.

"I told them that pamphlet which you got is racist," she said. "No matter which way you look at it," she told SBS.

"Half the things in there are derogatory, half the things in there are very discriminative, and for you to be putting it out as a 'whitefella way' in itself is very discriminative."

The brochure was also criticised by other indigenous groups who questioned whether a non-indigenous person would receive the same treatment.

However Shelter SA's Executive Director Dr Alice Clark told SBS she was surprised by the reaction to the said the document which has been around for five years.

"We've only ever had really positive feedback, so while I felt personally devastated about receiving a complaint, I was also surprised that this was the first time anyone had said they didn't like it," she said.

The document has since been withdrawn.
