UPDATE: AN out-of sessions court hearing at the St Kilda Rd Police Crime Complex heard Steven James Hunter had fatally stabbed Sarah Cafferkey with repeated blows at his Bacchus Marsh address on November 10.

Detective Sen-Constable Damien O'Mahoney told the court Hunter had made admissions about the killing of Ms Cafferkey after his arrest.

After Hunter had stabbed Ms Cafferkey, he moved her body the following day to Point Cook where her body was found by police in a wheelie bin last Saturday.

Hunter, 47, with dyed blond hair, was wearing a police-issued white plastic suit, and bare feet.

He barely spoke during the brief hearing, indicating to Bail Justice Adam Trumble that he understood he had been charged with one count of murder and that he did not have a medical condition.

Mr Trumble told Hunter he could not bail him.

Hunter was taken to the Melbourne Custody Centre where he will be remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court tomorrow.

Earlier, Hunter was arrested at an address in Caroline St, Hawthorn at 12.30pm by members of the special operations group.

The heavily armed police called on the suspected killer to come out with his hands up.

It took Hunter less than a minute to emerge from the second-storey unit.

Tradesman Justin Pryor said Hunter was faced with up to a dozen heavily armed officers.

"They were yelling out to a person to come out with nothing in their hands. I looked over the fence and there was two tactical response guys with guns and riot shields," he said.

"They repeated themselves maybe three or four times within 30 seconds and (he) was out."

Mr Pryor said police called on Hunter by name to come out of the building.

"He didn't struggle or resist in anyway," he said.

A resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said more than a dozen police descended on the block of units.

She said Hunter appeared to surrender without incident and was led away in handcuffs by two detectives.

"The man came out with two or three policeman, he was handcuffed. He didn't say anything,'' she said.

"They were there for a while trying to get him and then they just seem to pull him out from right down the back of all the units. There was no struggle. He seemed like he was cooperating fully."

It is understood police pounced on the units about 12.30pm, arresting Hunter about 15 minutes later.

The suspect had blond hair, was bare footed and wearing a shorts and a short sleeved shirt as he was led away.

"He looked disheveled," the witness said.

He did not appear injured.

The body of Sarah Cafferkey was found in a house in Point Cook.

Resident Bill Sklavenitis said Hunter appeared tired and old.

"He looked older than his age," he said. "The lady detective put him in the car nicely and they drove away and that was it."

"It's very close to home. We've got kids running around the street all the time so you don't like it when it's this close to home," he said.

Mr Sklavenitis said he believed the units were a retirement village."

Forensic police remain at the scene where they are taking photographs of the driveway leading to the unit Hunter emerged from.

Victoria Police urged the community not to post on social media sites comments which could affect any court matters in the future.

"We request people refrain from posting hateful or inciteful comments on these sites," a statement from the force said.

Earlier, police said Hunter was a person of interest as police pieced together the last moments of Ms Cafferkey's life and staged a nationwide hunt.

The homicide squad has focused on posts made via Facebook to Ms Cafferkey, which include Hunter messaging: "Love the pics ... Looking good Heartbreaker lol" and "Catch up when you get free time..."

Ms Cafferkey's body was found in a Point Cook house after the homicide squad executed a search warrant on Saturday night.

The 22-year-old Bacchus Marsh woman went missing on November 9 and her car was found in Maribyrnong six days later.

Police yesterday confirmed the death of Ms Cafferkey was considered a murder and formally identified her body.

The Herald Sun yesterday revealed a yellow sedan had also provided a new clue in the murder probe.

Investigators set up a crime scene around a stripped-down yellow Ford sedan on the Western Hwy near Bacchus Marsh on Friday.

Neighbours in Point Cook said a man matching Hunter's appearance drove a yellow vehicle.

Det-Inspector Michael Roberts, of the homicide squad, has ruled out an ex-boyfriend of Ms Cafferkey as a person of interest.

But the father of one of the men who live at the rented property where Ms Cafferkey was found said his son had been through a "considerable ordeal".

Denis Weily, dad of Point Cook man Adam Weily, said: "Adam has been through a considerable ordeal. He's been referred to a psychologist due to the high degree of trauma.

"It's been extremely traumatic for all involved and we are 12,000km away in Tanzania and can't help or do anything."

The Herald Sun does not suggest Adam Weily is implicated in any way in Ms Cafferkey's death.

A staff member at El Zorro Transport where Adam works as a national transformation manager said: "He's not here. I don't know when he'll be back. I'm just taking messages for him and emailing them through to him. He phoned this morning to say he wouldn't be in."

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
