MEET Adam Andersen, the latest My Kitchen Rules contestant vying to be the one you love to hate.

The former tennis pro, who attained a number 294 ranking at the height of his career, has raised eyebrows with his scathing critiques of his fellow contestants' instant restaurants and his promise to play the game as strategically as he used to on centre court.

And now Adam, 45, and his wife Carol Molloy, 47, are preparing to put their money where their mouths are on Sunday as they host their own instant restaurant.

But will their cocksure attitude see them take a tumble and face early elimination like overconfident Canberra duo Gina and Anna did in round one?

"There's a fine line between being competitive and being cocky but they do go hand in hand," says Adam.

"If you can back up your competitive nature with a performance that is worthy, then you're fine. Both Carol and I don't doubt ourselves, we back our ability. Because that's the biggest disadvantage you can have — if you have doubts, that's when you start to make mistakes."

Adam has no apologies for his drive to win, saying that he believes it will be his greatest asset as the cooking competition furthers.

"Being in a competitive environment is something I'm very used to," he explains.

"I had it every day of my life when I played tennis for a living. Being competitive gives you the drive to win and the ability to see things through.

"And at the end of the day My Kitchen Rules is a competition."

And lest you think Adam is the one driving this competitive ship, think again. His quiet but determined wife Carol says Adam's got nothing on her.

"I work in events so I'm used to being in control and being in control of the people around me," she explains.

"When Adam's under stress he tends to go quiet. So there's probably going to be a lot of me nagging him. Occasionally there's a bit of tension but I usually get my own way!"

"She did bark at me a lot," Adam agrees. "But on the whole we enjoy our time together on the show. We got to support each other."

While Adam admits they had a strategy going into the competition, he believes they weren't the only couple to plan their attack.

"You'd be silly not to have formulated a strategy," he says. "For us, we were a little bit louder in a post-interviews."

And as for those "villain" tags? Neither Carol or Adam are particularly bothered by the criticism.

"I didn't want to be stereotyped as a villain but I've been true to myself," says Adam. "I tell it like I see it."

"We're both competitive but we were never to my recollection nasty or strategic scorers at all," adds Carol.

"But as for who should have been cast as a villain from our group, that's a tough one," laughs Adam.

"If it's a race, I think I'd be winning at the moment!"
