10.10pm — TROISI GIVES AUSTRALIA THE ADVANTAGE

AUSTRALIA is back in front in tonight's Asian Cup final after a James Troisi goal late in the first period of extra time.

Tomi Juric was critical in the lead-up, wriggling his way past a South Korean defender on the touchline and crossing the ball into a dangerous area.

Troisi did the rest and now the Socceroos are 15 minutes away from the Asian crown.

9.50pm — SOUTH KOREA FORCE EXTRA TIME

Korea Republic's Heung-Min Son hits the equaliser in injury time. The Asian Cup final is heading for extra time.

SOUTH Korea has forced the Asian Cup final into extra time with a late equaliser.

Heung-Min Son slotted a goal past Mat Ryan in the first minute of injury time to stun the home crowd.

Australia has 30 minutes to try to win the game. If neither side scores, we'll head to penalties.

9.25pm — KRUSE SIDELINED WITH INJURY

Robbie Kruse's night is over. Source: Getty Images

ROBBIE Kruse has been forced off the ground with what appears to be another serious lower leg injury.

The unlucky forward, who missed last year's World Cup after tearing his ACL, collapsed in the 68th minute and despite a valiant attempt was unable to continue.

James Troisi has been subbed in as his replacement.

9.20pm — SOCCEROOS HOLDING FIRM

Tim Cahill was unable to find a way past the South Korean defence tonight. Source: Getty Images

AUSTRALIA is less than 30 minutes away from being crowned champion of Asia.

The Socceroos defence continues to deny South Korea and create the odd chance at the other end.

Ange Postecoglou has just made his first substitution, replacing Tim Cahill with Tomi Juric.

Cahill took his only opportunity of the game well but was unable to impact the scoreboard like he has so many times before.

8.50pm — LUONGO'S STAR RISES FURTHER

Massimo Luongo is pushing for player of the tournament honours. Source: AP

YOU can argue they don't deserve it but the reality is Australia leads 1-0 at half-time of tonight's Asian Cup final.

South Korea certainly had the better of the first half and came close several times just before the break.

But Trent Sainsbury found Massimo Luongo with a neat through ball in the 45th minute — and the rising star from Swindon Town did the rest.

Luongo took the ball and turned before firing home into the South Korean net to send the Stadium Australia crowd crazy.

Good luck keeping a lid on 'Mass Hysteria' now!

8.10pm — JEDINAK ALMOST BENDS IT HOME

Mile Jedinak is leading from the front early. Source: Getty Images

SOCCEROOS skipper Mile Jedinak showed his ability at set pieces by almost bending home a free kick in the ninth minute of tonight's Asian Cup final.

Nice lead-up work by Massimo Luongo and Mathew Leckie resulted in a free kick to Mark Milligan just outside the 18-yard box.

Jedinak curled his shot over the wall but saw it sail just high of the goal.

Australia has started well, all though Ivan Franjic has already picked up a yellow card for pulling the shirt of an opponent.

7.40pm — SOCCEROOS HAVE NO FEAR

Ange Postecoglou has full confidence in his team. Source: FoxSports

ANGE Postecoglou stressed his players won't be overcome by the pressure of tonight's Asian Cup final in his pre-game interview.

"This team's shown no fear all tournament. They haven't taken a backward step and they won't tonight," Postecoglou said.

The Socceroos coach insisted Ivan Franjic had overcome a hip issue.

"Ivan's fine. From our perspective everyone has a clean bill of health and we'll have a strong 11 out there," he said.

The final pits Australia's free-wheeling attack against the defensive solidarity of the South Koreans.

The Socceroos have scored 12 goals in five games while South Korea is yet to concede one.

PATH TO THE FINAL

Australia

Group stage: 4-1 win against Kuwait, 4-0 win against Oman, 1-0 defeat against South Korea

Quarter-final: 2-0 win against China, Semi-final: 2-0 win against UAE

South Korea

Group stage: 1-0 win against Oman, 1-0 win against Kuwait, 1-0 win against Australia

Quarter-final: 2-0 win against Uzbekistan, Semi-final 2-0 win against Iraq

7pm — NO SURPRISES FOR SOCCEROOS

Tim Cahill will lead from the front tonight. Source: Getty Images

IVAN Franjic has proven his fitness and will start in an unchanged Socceroos line-up for tonight's Asian Cup final against South Korea.

Ange Postecoglou has kept the faith with the 11 which did the job against UAE in the semi-final.

It's the first time the team has remained unchanged in the tournament.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it," Socceroos great John Kosmina said.

There are two changes from the Australian team which started against South Korea in the group stage.

Mile Jedinak was unavailable for that game because of injury, while Jason Davidson has replaced Aziz Behich at left full back.

LIVE: Queensland election

Sky News Political Editor David Speers talks to reporters across Queensland.

WELCOME to our live coverage of the Queensland election 2015. Stay tuned for all the latest news and colour from the polls as the Sunshine State casts its vote in what is expected to be a close race.

10.25pm

QUEENSLANDER!!!

Kate Jones has just done her best ALP Bob Hawke impression. In a true blue Aussie celebration she said: "I'll have a beer, thanks."

She downed that XXXX like a pro.

That's how you drink a beer in Queensland. Pic: Liz Burke. Source: NewsComAu

While cries of "we hate Campbell", "this is vindication" and "revenge" came from the supportive crowd, Ms Jones took a more gracious tone.

But a humble returning member for Ashgrove told news.com.au that Mr Newman wished her all the best when he called her to concede defeat and that she wished him the same.

"I lost fair and square in 2012," she told news.com.au.

"I don't believe in that (revenge).

"I went into politics when I was quite young and I didn't go into politics for those reasons."

10.05pm

Premier Campbell Newman and Oppn Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk have made their last pitch to Qld voters.

KATE Jones is feeling the love in Ashgrove.

In her victory speech she has thanked her supporters for helping her save Ashgrove from being a place she "didn't want to be".

The returning member told the crowd at Northern Suburbs Hockey Club that after her 2012 defeat the community became a place "I didn't want to live, a place I didn't want to raise my children".

Kate Jones delivered an emotional victory speech where she thanked her loyal supporters in Ashgrove. Courtesy: Nine News Brisbane

But Jones was thrilled with her victory over a now debunked Campbell Newman.

"The vote here in Ashgrove sends a very clear message that we want a better way going forward.

"I've learned trust is something that cannot be bought. It is something that is earned."

Jones Promise to uphold values shown at the ballot box by the people who elected her.

"I will try my utmost hardest."

The crowd responded with "we love you" and "we hate him".

9.55pm.

KATE Jones was given the rock-star treatment as she arrived at her team's official afterparty.

The new – and returning – Member for Ashgrove arrived to cheers of "team Kate, team Kate" when she arrived with her entrance timed with nearby seat of my Coottha being called for ALP.

9.50pm

AT the Northern Suburbs Hockey Club where Kate Jones loyalists are celebating news.com.au reporter Liz Burke reports she heard "I hate Campbell Newman" called out almost as often as "what an awesome night".

Former government communications officer Debbie Tucker lost her job under Newman's ruthless cuts when the LNP gained government in 2012 and said that's why she "joined Team Kate".

"She was robbed of her seat and this is just the best thing that could happen," Debbie said.

9.30pm

KATE Jones looks set for one heck of an afterparty tonight with celebrations already underway in Ashgrove.

Crowds of supporters are celebrating the returning MP's victory over Premier Campbell Newman.

Campbell Newman has phoned his opponent in the seat of Ashgrove to concede according to Sky News.

Supporter Andy, who did not wish to give his full name who has been working on Kate's campaign said: "something extraordinary has happened".

"I've been knocking on doors, hundreds of doors shaken thousands of hands and this is just awesome. I'm ready to burst into tears," he said.

And he did.

Another staffer said the extraordinary result just showed what a "nasty, nasty" leader Campbell Newman had been and people had realised

that.

"It's an awesome night, it's incredible."

9.15pm

The Queensland election has become a national sport as #qldvotes trends on twitter.

But it's a tough call as to what to follow. Sport or the election?

9pm

Sky News has called 36 seats to the ALP and 25 seats to the LNP with 45 the target for either party to win with around 27 per cent of the vote counted.

The tally points toward the likelihood of the ALP forming government. But it could still be a hung parliament.

8.50pm

TIM Nichols is back in front in the seat of Clayfield, which is just as well, since the LNP is now likely to look to him to lead the party as Ashgrove ballots get counted in Labor's favour.

8.25pm

LABOR could exact the ultimate revenge on the LNP, even if it loses the election. The battleground of Ashgrove is looking increasingly in the ALP's favour with Kate Jones looking set to take back the seat.

First counts coming in for Ashgrove show Labor candidate Kate Jones ahead on 48 percent of the vote with two booths counted.

And overall, early counts are indicating a 9 per cent swing to Labor in an extraordinary comeback from 2012's bloodbath election.

Labor leader Annastacia Palaszczuk is reportedly awaiting results before making an appearance at her function in Richlands.

8pm

IN some tragic election news, the father of a family struck by lightning near a polling booth on the Gold Coast Hinterland has died.

The family-of-four was playing in the playground at Lawrence Hinde Park, Worongary, when severe thunderstorms rolled in about 3.30pm, theGold Coast Bulletin reported.

The man, his wife, and two young children, aged 18-months and 12-weeks-old, were also injured.

7.30pm

THE man touted as a potential replacement if Queensland Premier Campbell Newman fails to win the seat of Ashgrove could also have a fight on his hands.

Very early counting has ALP candidate John Martin in front with just under 200 votes counted.

7pm

POLLS in Queensland are now closed. The booths shut at 6pm Queensland time.

Let the counting begin.

6.45pm

A FATHER is fighting for his life after he, his wife and two young children were struck by lightning as a massive storm lashed the Gold Coast this afternoon the Gold Coast Bulletin reports.

Paramedics were desperately trying to revive the children at the scene at Lawrence Hinde Park in Worongary in the Gold Coast hinterland.

A poll booth worker who witnessed the incident said the lightning strike was "beyond a bang".

"There was a massive blast of light and it was beyond a bang … it just shattered the air," the worker said.

"I did not think anything of it initially but then emergency services showed up."

6.30pm

Confidence in Campbell Newman's ability to hold his seat is flatlining. Former premier Rob Borbidge says it's looking increasingly unlikely Campbell Newman will win his seat of Ashgrove according to The Courier-Mail

And Channel 9's Galaxy exit poll is predicting victory to the ALP.

The poll predicts that after preferences Labor would secure 54 per cent of the vote while 46 per cent would go to the LNP.

Meanwhile, the Electrical Trades Union wants to sue the LNP for defamation.

The union says the advertisement falsely accused its state secretary, Peter Simpson, of taking money from alleged bikie criminals.

5.50pm

LOOKS like Queensland is in for some major storms all over the state. Not only is the Premier in for a heck of a fight in Ashgrove the weather has turned as well.

Severe thunderstorm warnings have been issued by the Bureau of Meteorology for Logan, Redland and parts of the Ipswich, Scenic Rim, Gold Coast and Brisbane Council Areas.

There's also storm warnings for Southeast Coast and parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields, Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett and Darling Downs and Granite Belt.

Queenslanders will need to be quick to get their votes in before they get pummelled in the rain. The question is, who will be pummelled in the election?

5pm

CAMPBELL Newman could really go down swinging, according to Sky News Australia, which reports sources saying the swing in Ashgrove is currently higher than the state average.

4.17pm

IT looks like the election is starting to make some voters googly-eyed.

Where is Inala?

It's the little Aussie town everyone is talking about. While some locals say it's a 's***hole', It could well become the centre of power in Queensland.

Liz Bourke takes a look around Inala.

3.50pm

THE voting continues, with plenty of contenders for the day's "most Queensland" moment. Is it the surfers rolling off the beach and into the polling stations, the obsessive interest in where the barbecue's at, the bikies standoff or perhaps the dirty sloganning? Tell us your thoughts at stories@news.com.au.

3.30pm

A THIEF has struck at an Ashgrove polling booth, causing a distraction with a baby to rob a coffee cart of $1200, The Courier Mail reports.

Brew Booth's Liz Hope had been making coffees since 6am at St Finbarr's Parish School, when a woman plonked an 18-month-old baby on the counter and asked to borrow some sunscreen. The woman then knocked the sunscreen on the ground and hurried off while the barista was picking it up.

Ms Hope said she believes the woman was acting with a partner, who stole her float and the entire day's earnings.

3pm

UH-OH. Ashgrove's Labor candidate Kate Jones and her rival Premier Newman's wife Lisa are wearing the same dress for election day.

Both plumped for the sleeveless blue Cue frock accessorised with a black patent belt and black heels. Is someone playing a cruel joke, or does this simply show the two leading parties are just the same after all?

2.40pm

THE big story in week one of the campaign was the arrest of Twitter parody account holder Iain Fogerty, @Can_Do_Campbell. Nearly a dozen police officers took him into custody after he wore an "I'm with Stupid" T-shirt and stood beside LNP campaigners in the Valley.

But the T-shirts are back in Brisbane today. We wonder if these lovely ladies will be arrested?

2.00pm

THERE'S been even more wrangling over tactics, with a court injunction to remove Labor signs at polling booths overruled, the Courier Mail reports. The LNP had claimed Labor's "Remember to number every square" posters were too similar to ECQ signs and "misleading electors".

1.20pm

THE race is most certainly on, and things are heating up in sunny Queenland.

Voters have been taking to social media to share their political views with less than six hours until the polls close. Some were concerned with saving reef, others accused the LNP of wanting to privatise public schools while many expressed their displeasure at new rules insisting Queenslanders have ID to vote.

Community action group GetUp has claimed that the LNP has applied for a Supreme Court injunction against its how-to-vote cards.

12.50pm

WHILE there haven't been any more fights, there have been a few bizarre moments at the polls. First, there was this awkward pat/handshake from potential premier Ms Palaszczuk:

Then, there was the voter who didn't exactly choose the classiest outfit:

And then there's those who really only care about their breakfast:

12.00pm

MS Palaszczuk has been out and about at voting stations, looking confident as she handed out flyers about "keeping our assets" and joined voters for sausage sizzles and Lamingtons.

Labor's Ashgrove candidate Kate Jones has also cast her vote, at Payne Road State School. She thanked the 500 local volunteers and said she expected Ashgrove to go down to the wire, handing out how-to-vote cards to help things along.

With the Greens aiming for about 12 per cent of the vote — and their preferences flowing to Labor — experts reckon Ms Jones will once again be the member for Ashgrove.

11.40am

TEMPERS flared at the polling booth at Nambour High School at about 8am this morning after a row erupted between two men. The pair were engaged in a screaming match, but according to Nicklin LNP candidate Matt Trace, who witnessed the incident, it wasn't about politics.

A Peter Wellington campaign worker, who is an ex-police officer, stepped in to separate the two men, the Sunshine Coast Daily reported.

"They were just a pair of idiots," Mr Trace confirmed.

11.30am

HE'S been the hardest candidate to find in peanut country. It's polling day and PUP candidate John Bjelke-Petersen is nowhere to be seen. Instead, it's his wife who's out on the campaign trail.

Has anyone seen John Bjelke-Petersen? Source: News Corp Australia

11.10am

The ECQ website is still down, but you can find the location of polling booths around the state on this map. Disabled voters may have a harder time of it, however, with Queenslanders complaining of a lack of mobility access at some stations, according to the Courier Mail.

Depending on your priorities, track down your nearest sausage sizzle or cake stall using this interactive guide..

10.50am

MR Newman has cast his vote for himself, speaking briefly to the media before chatting with voters. He looked pretty relaxed for a man in danger of becoming Queensland's first premier to lose their seat.

Earlier, he told Nine News: "If I've lost in Ashgrove, essentially the government has been kicked out tonight. The Labor government will be beholden to the Greens and the chaos of Canberra will come to Queensland." He refused to speculate on who could take the leadership if the government is elected without him, saying with "difficult decisions, you lose a bit of bark along the way".

Meanwhile, even Wayne Swan is not immune to the appeal of the cakes.

10.30am

VOTERS are hitting the polling booths in their droves, with huge queues forming at some stations even before they opened.

Queenslanders are using Twitter to share advice on quiet places to vote, as well as tips on the really important stuff — where is offering the best food. It's going to be an exciting day.

10.20am

AN oversight in Queensland's constitution might allow Campbell Newman to remain Premier even if he loses his seat of Ashgrove today as many expect he will, according to The Australian.

Anne Twomey, professor of constitutional law at University of Sydney, said the state's constitution — drafted in 2001 — was silent on whether the premier needed to be a member of parliament.

That means Queensland could take the lead from other Australian constitutions, such as that of the commonwealth, Victoria or South Australia, and Mr Newman could stay as Premier even if he loses Ashgrove, until he found a colleague to vacate their seat and prompt a by-election.

10am

THE party people of Brisbane have spoken, and they won't be told how to vote.

Queensland's nightclub faithful have responded with fierce opposition to anti-Labor text messages sent from some of the capital's biggest clubs on the eve of the state election.

Texts apparently sent by the owner of Katrzyna Group — which owns popular nightspots Family, Press Club and Cloudland — were sent to the club's database encouraging them think about their vote. "Be careful with your vote on Saturday," the text read. "Labor wants to shut pubs and clubs early."

The message is in response to Labor's plans for late-night venues. Patrons responded to the text messages on Facebook threatening to boycott the club and demanding an apology.

It looks like text messages don't win votes. Source: News Corp Australia

9.30am

CAMPBELL Newman can't spell it, and most people outside of Queensland would struggle even to pronounce it. If you want to sound like a politics pro, find out how to pronounce the state's Labor leader and hopeful premier Annastacia Palaszczuk's name here.

9.20am

POLLING booths have opened, but just minutes after voting started, the Electoral Commission Queensland has already been struck by disaster — its website has gone down.

An ECQ spokespersons said their IT department is currently working to fix the issue. Find out more on the Courier Mail's live blog.

Homemade ‘raping machine’ used on women

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 30 Januari 2015 | 03.30

A truck driver is accused of kidnapping two prostitutes and raping them. Source: News Limited

A VICTORIAN truck driver kidnapped two prostitutes and forced them into his live-in bus where he kept a homemade "raping machine", a court has heard.

Serial sex offender Dennis William Newall is in jail for raping a backpacker in WA about four years ago, and was also sentenced to eight years prison in 2002 for raping a Melbourne sex worker.

The 56-year-old pleaded guilty on Thursday to kidnapping and raping two more St Kilda prostitutes on separate occasions in November and December 2001.

Both women thought they were going to die after Newall enticed them into his car, covered their heads and took them to his converted bus at Brooklyn, the Victorian County Court heard. Newall kept a wooden cross-like structure on the bus and told one woman it was a "sex machine" and he was planning to add a mechanical arm to it.

He asked one of his victims to "rate his performance" after raping her, and later requested her phone number.

The court heard Newall forced his son, then 17, to help carry out one of the kidnappings.

His teenage son got in the boot of Newall's car and leapt out to place a pillowcase over the woman's head while she was in the back seat.

An unknown man was involved in the other kidnapping.

The women, who were aged 20 and 27 at the time, did not go to police about the attacks until recently.

Newall told one victim "no one would believe a junkie whore" like her, she told the court.

Both women said they remained traumatised by what he had done. One referred to his wooden, cross-like structure as a "raping machine".

"I couldn't wrap my head around the sadism and depravity needed to build such a machine," she told the court.

All three Melbourne-based attacks took place within about a month, crown prosecutor John Livitsanos told the court.

Defence barrister Shaun Ginsbourg said Newall had developed remorse over his behaviour.

He will be sentenced at a later date.

This is the beast of the skies

The Antonov An-225 Mriya plane is huge. Picture: Karlis Bambrans Source: Flickr

YOU haven't seen a true "jumbo jet" until you've laid eyes on this beauty.

Built back in December 21, 1988 by the Soviet Union during the Cold War, the Antonov An-225 Mriya is the biggest and heaviest plane in aviation history. And to the delight of plane-spotters, the giant of the skies is still in operation to this day.

Now that's a lot of wheels! Picture: Gulgeo.eu Source: Flickr

With six engines, 32 wheels, the ability to carry up to 650 tonnes on board (50 cars can fit!), and the longest wingspan ever seen (at 88 metres), the An-225 Mriya raised eyebrows from the get-go. It offers a lot more than your standard jet.

To put that into perspective, a Boeing 747 jet has four engines, 16 wheels, can carry about half as much weight (maximum takeoff weight is 333 tonnes), and has a wingspan of 60m (28 metres smaller than the An-225).

The centre of attention. Picture: RHL Images Source: Flickr

And it's one of a kind — just a single An-225 was ever built. Work did begin on a second plane, but was never completed.

A glimpse inside the plane. Picture: Karlis Dambrans Source: Flickr

Originally built to airlift a space ship in the 80s, the jet lay unused for eight years when no longer needed, before being refurbished and put into commercial service for Antonov Airlines to carry cargo.

Hop on board. Picture: Eric Salard Source: Flickr

Since then it has transported huge items such as a locomotive, and emergency supplies to disaster-stricken areas.

It transports a lot of large items these days. Picture: Gulgo.eu Source: Flickr

The plane holds the world record for the heaviest weight carried, at 189,980 kilograms, and the longest item on board 2010: Two 42m wind turbine blades, back in 2010.

Here are some more facts about the An-225:

Length: 43.32m

Width: 6.4m

Height: 4.4m

Cruising speed: Up to 850kmh

Cruising altitude: Up to 12,000m

Airfield length: 3000-3500m

Sydney Confidential talks to Rose Byrne about being back in Australia for the 2015 AACTA awards.

SOME of our biggest stars were in a sharing mood when they walked the red carpet at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) awards in Sydney.

Hosts Cate Blanchett and Deborah Mailman had little time to talk after posing for photos as they rushed inside to prepare for the event.

But other celebrities were more than happy to dish the dirt on everything from what it's really like to film a sex scene to their thoughts on Prince Philip's knighthood.

ALL THE WINNERS FROM THE AACTA AWARDS

RED CARPET HIGHLIGHTS

Here are some of our favourite quotes from the red carpet:

Rove on the hardest thing about being a dad: The hardest thing is not hurting the child. But, their bones are pretty rubbery and when they're born their skull isn't fully formed anyway so you've got a little bit of wriggle room.

John Jarratt on people freaking out when they see him: The best freak out was at the Melbourne premiere of the first Wolf Creek and this girl was sitting in front of me totally sh*tting herself and she was covering her face and she couldn't look at the screen anymore. So she turned away and looked behind her and looked straight at me and went purple!

Margaret Pomeranz on who will win the Oscar for Best Picture: It's got to be either The Grand Budapest Hotel or Birdman. I think they're both extraordinary, brave, wonderful films.

Josh Thomas on Prince Philip's knighthood: Obviously it's whack. But people are acting surprised that Tony Abbott did something whack and it's like, we had an election, he was on TV every day, we know he's whack! We did it. You voted for him! Bow down to Prince Philip, that's the price.

Brooke Satchwell on her memories of being a Neighbours cast member: I didn't know up from down when I first walked onto that set in Ramsay street and I remember I stopped off at the bathroom at the Nunawading studios and saw Granny Helen's cane hanging on the back of the door and rang my mum and went, 'Oh my god I'm in Neighbours!'

Damian Walshe-Howling on filming nude scenes: It's sort of cool because you get to feel like you're doing B-grade porn in a very high quality show … You wear what's called a 'c**k sock'. It's the end of a lady's stocking and it usually has a little bit of elastic around it and it ties up around the whole tackle and sort of ties up in a neat bow in your pubic hair.

Lachy Hulme on the most challenging role he's ever taken on: Probably Todd Russell in (2012 TV movie) Beaconsfield I would say, because he's a very reticent man. He's from a small town in Tasmania, he was sort of thrust into the global limelight because rocks f***ing fell on him.

Getting to know Todd — because I moved in with him for a while — Todd was very, very difficult to play.

MH370 crash declared ‘an accident’

The Search for MH370 video aims to explain the activities and complexity of the search effort to date, for families affected by the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, and the general public.

Sad news ... a briefing aboard the survey ship Go Phoenix searching for MH370. Source: Twitter

THE mysterious disappearance of flight MH370 has officially been declared an accident by Malaysia's Department of Civil Aviation.

In an announcement that was itself shrouded in controversy when it was initially cancelled due to the presence of next of kin, Director-General Azharuddin Abdul Rahman told a press conference all 239 passengers and crew were "presumed to have lost their lives".

He said Malaysia Airlines was immediately ready to proceed with compensation payments for families of the victims.

"This declaration is by no means the end," said Mr Rahman.

"We will forge ahead with the assistance of the Governments of China and Australia.

"MH370, its passengers and its crews will always be remembered and honoured."

The investigation was now in the "search and recovery stage" but no hope was held of finding survivors.

REVEALED: What keeps MH370 searchers motivated

MORE: The first year report on the MH370 mystery

"Malaysia continues to cooperate with China and Australia for MH370's search to bring closure to the tragedy," said the Director-General.

"The search and recovery in the Indian Ocean remains a priority."

Investigations by international aviation authorities and the Malaysian Police were continuing but both were "limited by the lack of physical evidence, particularly the flight recorders".

"Therefore at this juncture, there is no evidence to substantiate any speculations as to the cause of the accident," he said.

"An interim statement detailing the progress of the safety investigation is expected to be released on or around the one year anniversary of the accident."

The statement is likely to be cold comfort to the families of passengers and crew, wondering if they will ever know the fate of their loved ones.

A search of the southern Indian Ocean which is believed to be the final resting place of the Boeing 777 has covered 30 per cent of the "priority" area without any trace of the aircraft.

The news comes as relatives of those missing on Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 protested in Beijing, demanding that the search for their loved ones not be called off.

Around two dozen Chinese relatives of the missing protested at the Malaysian embassy early today.

Police officers cordoned off the area in Beijing's Chaoyang district, and more than 50 police cars, buses and five firetrucks were deployed to the area.

Families in Malaysia were also unhappy after they appeared at a press conference earlier which had been suddenly cancelled before Mr Rahman's pre-recorded announcement was aired.

For families of those on board, it will mean Malaysia Airlines can now pay compensation of $180,000 per victim, as required by international conventions.

For the Australian-led search effort, it is a reminder of the importance of the mission underway in the southern Indian Ocean.

Now into its fourth month, the underwater search has been a gruelling task for the crews of the vessels involved.

Working around the clock, the four vessels have been using sonar equipment attached to lengthy cables to scour the ocean floor, hoping to find some evidence of the Boeing 777.

To date not a trace has been found, but experts say that is no indication they are looking in the wrong place.

Search continues ... a Fugro autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) launched from the Australian-contracted survey ship M/V Fugro Discovery as part of a new high-resolution search for MH370. Source: Supplied

The southern Indian Ocean is vast and a similar incident - the crash of Air France flight 447 in 2009 - took two years before the wreckage was found, when investigators had a good idea of where the A330 came down.

In the case of MH370, all investigators have to go on is a series of "pings" or handshakes recorded between the mute aircraft and satellites after all other ground communication was lost.

The pings have provided an "approximate" location for the aircraft's whereabouts during its doomed flight.

But even the Australian Transport Safety Bureau has conceded on several occasions they are working with probabilities, not certainties.

The current underwater search is expected to be completed in May.

Australian and Malaysian authorities have committed to continuing the search until the aircraft is found.

Hi-tech ... equipment used to search the seabed for any sign of the aircraft. Source: Supplied

Six Australians and two New Zealanders were among the 239 passengers and crew.

There has been official reason given for the aircraft's disappearance but theories have ranged from pilot sabotage and alien abduction.

There has even been speculation the aircraft was shot down by the US military because it was believed to have been hijacked by terrorists.

The International Air Transport Association is working with airlines to develop better technology to track aircraft to ensure there is never a repeat of MH370.

The Malaysia Airlines' flight was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it vanished from radar screens on March 8, 2014 less than an hour into its journey.

All communications were lost and its last known position was between Malaysia and Vietnam.

Timomatic changes his name

Timomatic is the latest celebrity to change his name. Source: News Corp Australia

TIMOMATIC is leaving his stage name behind and returning to his birth name, Tim Omaji.

The Nigerian-born Aussie singer-songwriter chatted to Nova's Fitzy and Wippa on air on Wednesday morning and declared that 'Timomatic' is no more.

Omaji, who rose to fame as a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance in 2009, recently split with his girlfriend, dancer Talia Fowler, and is heading in a new direction with his music career.

The radio duo decided to have some fun with the 27-year-old Parachute singer and called him pretending to be merch reps from Sony. They threw some classic ideas at him to promote the name change.

Omaji isn't the first Aussie celebrity to change his name — TV personality Andrew G confused a whole lotta fans in 2013 when he made the switch to Osher Günsberg. This was his third name change. We first we knew him as Andy G, he then became Andrew G, followed a few years later by Andrew Gunsberg before Osher came about.

The Bachelor host later revealed on his blog how a spiritual awakening while travelling through Israel led to his most recent rebranding.

‘Wear the push up bra I bought u’

Keeping it simple. Source: Instagram

WE'RE all guilty of having a chuckle or two at our parent's expense when they text us, but chances are they're nothing compared to the texts sent by Kate Siegel's mum.

The 26-year-old has decided to make the most of her mother's musings and advice, setting up the Instagram account 'Crazy Jewish Mom', which has just hit 170,000 followers.

The account is amusing to say the least — for example, for Siegel's birthday, she received this text: "Welcome to the wrong side of 25. The expiration date on your eggs is officially in sight. Tick Tock."

Then when her mum didn't like her outfit, she texted this: "Go shower and put on some eyeliner. Ur boyfriend is here! Oy. Is this how u dress with Superjew at your apt? I'm gonna burn those sweat pants. And wear the push up bra I bought u."

And she doesn't hold back on her advice: "Reminder, exercise ur calf muscles every other day. Unless u want to end up with cankles. It runs in the family. On your Father's side."

Siegel told Buzzfeed that "My mother knows I'm posting, but she's terrible at the internet, so I don't think she fully understands how often and the scope. That said, she LOVES it. She thinks it's all fantastic advice, stands by every word, and is happy that others are benefiting from her wisdom."

"My mother, as pushy as she can be, wants nothing but the best for me," she admitted to told The Huffington Post. "I wouldn't be where I am today without her support and guidance, and I love her very much. I just hope I'm not turning into her."

Here are more of her gems:

AUSTRALIAN golfer Robert Allenby allegedly ran up a $A4,324 bar tab at a Honolulu strip club the night he claims he was bashed, robbed and abducted.

Honolulu detectives continue to investigate what happened to Allenby on the evening of January 16.

GolfChannel.com reported it had interviewed multiple witnesses and retraced Allenby's steps after he had dinner with friends at the Amuse Wine Bar in downtown Honolulu.

After Allenby left the bar he went to Club Femme Nu, described as an adult entertainment club wedged between a tattoo parlour and a Korean restaurant, GolfChannel.com reported, citing multiple sources who were working at the premises.

Allenby was there until around midnight with "a group of friends" and ran up a $A4,324 bar tab, according to the report.

Allenby suffered facial cuts and bruising to his face and claimed he was hit in the face with a fist or baseball bat and robbed.

Several homeless people have now come forward with their separate versions of what they saw when they found Allenby on the footpath after the alleged attack.

One homeless man, Toa Kaili says Allenby later fell and hit his face on a lava rock.

Mr Kaili said he first noticed Allenby passed out on the footpath only a block away.

It took him 10 minutes to wake him and another eight minutes for Allenby to stand.

"He was beyond tipsy. This man was blitzed," he said.

"He then started saying, 'Where's the other guy? You gave him the keys; to get the keys.' I was like 'Wooh, this dude is beyond having drinks'."

He said Allenby then turned on him and his friend, Chris, accusing them of robbery after realising his phone and wallet were missing.

An angry Mr Kaili then left.

Two-and-a-half hours later, in the same spot, he again found Allenby, who did not recognise him: "He told us some punks robbed him."

Mr Kaili says Allenby soon again became convinced he and his friend were robbers, and began searching his bag.

"He kept on saying, 'You know who I am'. I didn't care because to me he was a guy passed out on the street and I was trying to help him."

Mr Kaili said Allenby threw a punch but missed. He left, but his friend stayed with Allenby.

Returning 30 minutes later, this time he found Allenby wiping blood off his face.

Aussie golfer Robert Allenby says he is thankful to be alive after being bashed and abducted in Hawaii, likening his experience to the movie blockbuster 'Taken'.

Another, Chris Khamis, said he did not see anyone beat Allenby and claimed the golfer kept repeating he was a millionaire and waved around his platinum credit card.

"It was his stupidity," Khamis told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

"(Allenby) passed out and hit his head.

"I was there. Nobody pushed him out of a car." Khamis also alleged Allenby had been at a strip club to get some "action".

Allenby said he was at a wine bar, became separated from friends, then was drugged or beaten unconscious, robbed, tossed in the boot of a car and dumped at a park 10km away.

GOLFER'S RESCUE: Allenby thanks homeless woman with $1000 reward

Homeless woman Charade Keane disputed Allenby's story, telling reporters she found him bloody and dazed not far from the wine bar.

Allenby recently met with Ms Keane and gave her a $1000 reward for saving his life.

Honolulu detectives have been collecting security footage of the area in an attempt to piece together Allenby's movements and to identify who used his credit cards.

A suspect in Robert Allenby's alleged assault has been seen on CCTV footage using the golfer's credit card.

"The incident involving Mr Allenby continues to be classified as a second-degree robbery and fraudulent use of credit card," Honolulu police spokesman Michelle Yu said.

"No arrest has been made." Allenby was in Hawaii to compete in the PGA Tour's Sony Open.

Allenby may shed more light when he holds a scheduled press conference on Tuesday in Phoenix, Arizona, the site of the next PGA Tour event.

Her answer sparked debate and criticism across Twitter, with social media users posting what they really thought of her reply.

Sanchez was the first runner-up in the competition to Colombia's Paulina Vega, who took the crown this year at the official ceremony in Miami.

The 63rd edition of the Miss Universe pageant was held at Florida International University before a full house of enthusiastic fans.

The contest featured the traditional parade of eye-catching swimsuits and national costumes and performances from teen idol Nick Jonas and Dominican-born American singer Prince Royce.

Why SodaStream is a fizzer

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 25 Januari 2015 | 03.29

Sodastream — is it all it's promised? Source: Supplied

Watch as this woman transforms cask wine into her favourite sparkling beverage - Storyful

I REMEMBER SodaStream in the 80s.

The joy exploding fizziness all over the kitchen, of placing too much flavour in and watching it bubble and splatter all over the floor in sticky joy only to leave you a mere half a bottle to drink — post accidental soda fountain.

The fizz, oh the fizz.

SODASTREAM'S SUCCESS IN AUSTRALIA BUCKS GLOBAL TRENDS

VIDEO- HOW TO MAKE CHAMPAGNE WITH A SODASTREAM

SODASTREAM FINALLY GIVES IN TO CRITICS

Back then it had glass bottles and they were much smaller.

And SodaStream came in a sexy shade of dog-poo brown and cream.

The thing was fiddly. It spilt a lot. And as a kid I thought it was awesome.

Remember this bad boy? Retro SodaStream. This is how it was done oldschool. Source: Supplied

We couldn't afford a new one.

By the time we managed to score a second-hand one, the novelty had run out of fizz.

The gas bottles were hard to find. And the places that still had them charged a lot.

Flavours were sparse.

At first cordial became the substitute for the 'real' flavours.

Then, the gas ran out.

Later, the glass bottles were just used for drinking flat cordial from — until we eventually broke most of them.

The SodaStream dream had died.

But last Christmas, it seemed, Sodastream was THE Christmas gift.

As a result there's been an influx of hardcore sodastreamers.

Yes, you with the experimental fizzy wine copying that Youtube video, I'm talking about you!

It's the bubbly revival I didn't see coming.

It's back and it's back in a big way. SodaStream. Pic supplied Source: Supplied

But I can't help wondering how long the new and improved hipster version will be around until the wizz of the fizz goes flat.

Some of the arguments for the love of SodaStream include: "but I love fizzing it myself" (so many double entendres I have no idea where to start) and "I don't buy no-name brand soda water because it contributes to destroying the brands you love."

Not quite sure how that works if you're making soda water at home.

Other arguments include not wanting to carry shopping bags full of fizzy water, a first world problem if ever I heard one.

Or how it is important to have fizzy water 24/7 at your fingertips for those unexpected vodka sessions. This argument survives on the premise that there is ALWAYS vodka in the house and that the lack of fizzy water is the big issue.

Oh, and SodaStream is economical. Whoa. Hold on. What?

Wine it up: SodaStream has become popular with fans of sparkling wine too. Pic Adam Smith Source: News Corp Australia

I started doing some maths.

A bit of googling showed the average starting price of a SodaStream is around $99.

If you want the flashy metal version — a bit like the coffee machine of the soda world — you'll be looking at double that.

Your $99 version will get you the drink maker, a bottle, one flavour and a 'starter' gas bottle.

I couldn't find out how many litres the starter gas was likely to make. But since there's only one flavour in there, I'm guessing not a lot.

In contrast, your average 1.25L of your generic brand soda water is around 80c (65c per litre)

SodaStream advertises its gas bottles produce 60 litres of fizz for around $51.

To make soda water economical, those gas bottles would need to be priced around the $39 mark because at 65c per litre, $50 will purchase 76 litres of soda water from the supermarket.

If you want to add flavour — it costs about $7.45 to flavour 12 litres.

So add an extra $37.25 to flavour a full gas canister — all up you're talking $88.25 for 60 litres.

Flavoured generic brand soft drink, as well as helping you get on your way to diabetes, starts as low as 75 cents for 1.25 litres — some closer to 97 cents for 1.25 litres.

Sodastream still costs more.

Oxfam and actress Scarlett Johannson have ended her nine year ambassadorship over protests about her role with SodaStream, a company with a factory in a West Bank settlement. Wall Street Journal contributor Joshua Mitnick explains the issues on Lunch Break. Photo: Getty

By my calculation there's never going to be a break-even point where the Sodastream becomes a more economical option than buying soda water by the litre.

The sad reality is with an initial outlay of $99, you basically pay for the privilege of making your own soft drinks.

For the same $99 you could have purchased around 152 litres of soda water already made, or 132 flavoured drinks.

Seriously, the guy who thought of this product is probably a rich genius who has someone else to make his drinks for him.

When I started talking numbers to the dedicated fans of Sodastream around me, they just started waving their hands in dismissal.

They don't care because they lurrrrve their Sodastream.

That tap water infused with manual fizz is as good as gold-coated in their eyes.

It is — the shizzle.

Clearly, you can't place a value on nostalgia, the labour of love, or the joy and pride involved when one becomes engaged in the creation of something.

In this case, your own carbonated drink.

What a fizzer.

Update:

Yep, you can get gas refills. Based on this info:

SodaStream $99 + gas canister $51 = $150

At 65c per litre (retail cost for soda water) you would need to drink 230L of soda water from your SodaStream to justify the $150 outlay.

But to make that much, you need 3.8 canisters of gas.

Another 2.8 canisters at around $20 per refill will cost you $56.

$99+$51+$56 = $206

That's around 317 litres of soda water at 65c per litre before you're in the cheap soda.

Happy fizzing!

NICK Kyrgios has prevailed in an instant Australian Open classic over Andreas Seppi.

The Australian young gun was seemingly down and out after losing the opening two sets but produced one of the greatest comebacks seen at Melbourne Park to win in five sets, 5-7, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 8-6.

Fighting mental demons seemingly all night, Kyrgios still managed to play some scintillating tennis in front of a packed Hisense Arena.

The loss stunned his Italian opponent, who had beaten Roger Federer in the previous round.

Kyrgios is the first Australian to reach the quarter finals since Lleyton Hewitt in 2005.

He is also the last Australian standing in the Australian Open after Bernard Tomic bowed out earlier today at the hands of No.7 seed Tomas Berdych.

The big-serving Czech was simply too good for the Australian in their fourth-round match, taking it in straight sets 6-2, 7-6, 6-2.

After collapsing in the first set, Tomic put up more of a fight in the second and forced a tie-break. However, Berdych once again took control in the third set, breaking Tomic to claim victory.

In early Day 7 action, Maria Sharapova set up a blockbuster quarter-final with Eugenie Bouchard, easily dismissing the challenge of China's Shuai Peng 6-3, 6-0.

Bouchard survived a second set collapse to beat Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu 6-1 5-7 6-2.

No.10 seed Ekaterina Makarova also continued her good form, defeating Julia Goerges in straight sets.

Japan’s seven craziest trends

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 24 Januari 2015 | 03.30

Forget umbrellas, just strap a ringbinder to your head. Picture: Japan Trend Shop Source: Supplied

JAPAN is the world's eccentric epicentre for wild inventions.

Some ideas spilling out of Tokyo — like sparkling pet drinks and ringbinder safety helmets — are almost too bizarre to believe.

Others start to sound like rather promising concepts. We're already hankering for a mobile cat table and "roomy aroma foot warmer".

The best of these trends will make it to Australia in 100,000 years. Others are so ridiculous they make chocolate pretzels sound like a good idea.

Either way, they're fantastic. Here are our seven favourite trends hitting Japanese shelves right now.

Under no circumstances should you go out in public wearing this. Picture: Japan Trend Shop Source: Supplied

1. Face Slimmer Exercise Mouthpiece

Forget that facelift, all you need for a youthful, wrinkle-free visage is this little gadget.

You simply fit a massive rubber mould around your lips and move your mouth around for three minutes a day.

The Face Slimmer's creators recommend you say vowel sounds out loud over and over again, which will "strength the twelve facial expression muscles in a comprehensive way". It definitely won't make you look like a creepy clown.

2. Necomimi Brainwave-Reading Cat Ear Headband

The Necomimi, described as a "fashion gadget", allows you to communicate your feelings through a pair of cat-ears.

The ears twitch and bob in response to your relaxed, happy, sad or excited emotional state, using "NeuroSky Technology".

It sounds like incredibly sophisticated, cutting-edge tech is being used to make the wearer look very silly indeed.

But don't worry about that. As the inventors say: "Forget wearing your heart on your sleeve, now you can wear it on your head".

Never mind the sedentary lifestyle, you may never even need to sit up again. Picture: Japan Trend Shop Source: Supplied

3. Super Gorone Desk

If your arms ever get tired holding up that tablet in bed, you'll probably really want one of these. Gadget-makers Thanko have come up with an adjustable, portable desk that will adapt to any position you're lying in.

It even features a USB-powered fan to keep your computer cool while you snuggle under a blanket.

They've also come up with a hands-free tablet holder you can strap to your front while on the train. For the laziest technology fans (so, all of us).

This uber-comfy pillow can be twisted into almost any shape. Picture: Japan Trend Shop Source: Supplied

4. Bibilab Twintails Pillow

This idea is actually ingenious rather than truly out-there, but we had to include it because we want one so much.

"Hug pillows" are hugely popular in Japan, and this one is apparently typical in that it's designed so you can wrap your whole body around it. The "twintails" (meaning pigtails) shape can be twisted into almost any position.

You can lie sandwiched between the tails or on top of them, you can twist it into a "sofa-cum-desk", or even share it with a friend. Forget five-star hotels, this must be the ultimate in comfort.

Fellow commuters will never notice your sneaky thumb extension. Picture: Japan Trend Shop Source: Supplied

5. Thumb Extender for Touchscreens

Tech-savvy Tokyo is at the forefront of smartphone innovation, which means everyone's currently carting around one of those massive mobiles.

But for those of us leaping headfirst on to the bandwagon, there's an elephant in the room: most of our thumbs won't stretch up to the farthest corner of the screen.

Help is at hand, trend-loving, tiny-handed phone users.

This giant, silicone thumb could become your new best friend. It comes with a black nub that can press buttons on the tablet as well as swipe, while your other hand remains free to hold you steady on the bus.

Embarrassed about your new, massive digit? The makers say the casual observer won't even notice.

Japan is famous for cuteness (or "kawaii"). You can see why. Picture: Japan Trend Shop Source: Supplied

6. Oppo Dog Muzzle Quack

Does your pet need a muzzle? Slip on this stylish, duck bill version and they'll look hilarious rather than a bit intimidating.

The plastic muzzles come in three sizes and colours (pink, yellow and brown) and will transform your pooch into "a semi-duck, designer 'billed'" pet.

Animal accessories and fashion are huge in Japan, so we can guarantee your dog will look truly style-savvy — i.e. absolutely ridiculous, in the most fabulous way.

This is on our wishlist for summer. Picture: Japan Trend Shop Source: Supplied

7. Frozen Beer Slushie Maker by Kirin Ichiban

This could be delicious, although it's more probably completely disgusting. We were not able to get hold of a sample, but remain hopeful that one is on its way.

Tokyo's coolest beer gardens started serving them in 2012, so it's high time we got in on the act Down Under.

Kirin uses patented freezing technology for its at-home slushie makers that adds a whipped, frozen top to the beer. The minus-zero ice cap insulates the lager or ale and keeps it cooler for longer.

It has already made an appearance at the Dodgers Stadium in the US. The perfect Australia Day accessory.

Bonus item: Toot Nano Colours No Slip Underwear

This underwear doesn't look so different to ordinary fitted boxer shorts, but the hilarious road-testing videos mean it makes the cut.

Hughes teammate survives blow by deadly bouncer

DANIEL Hughes has survived an almost identical blow to the head which killed his former teammate Phillip Hughes, during a first grade cricket match yesterday.

Leaving officials and onlookers in shock and holding their collective breath, Daniel, one of the state's most promising young batsmen and boyfriend of Nine TV reporter Erin Molan, was rushed to Hornsby hospital after he was left unconscious after suffering a direct hit to the back of his neck, underneath his cricket helmet.

Batting for Northern Districts against Blacktown at Mark Taylor Oval, Hughes attempted a hook shot off a first ball bouncer from bowler Cameron Nupier, ironically the same shot which resulted in the death of his namesake last November.

The impact of the ball on Daniel's neck was just millimetres from the same main artery which killed Phillip Hughes.

However unlike Phillip, who collapsed at the crease, a stunned and concussed Daniel, who also plays in the Big Bash with the Sydney Thunder, dropped his hands onto his knees as concerned opposition and teammates raced to his aid.

"His neck was swelling up and we thought 'oh God','' Northern Districts president Mike Langford said.

The incident occurred at 10.21am yesterday with play suspended until Hughes was assisted from the pitch and an ambulance called.

Molan received a phone call from worried Northern Districts officials as she was completing her commitments on the Today Show.

"I got a call saying he's been hit in the head with a ball, he's collapsed and there's an ambulance on the way, you've got to get here,'' Molan said.

"I don't think I've ever been so scared in my life.''

Hughes underwent a series of tests and CT scans before being cleared of any major damage and omitted from hospital.

He was resting at home last night.

"He's got the lump on the side of his head the size of a cricket ball, its horrendous,'' Molan told The Sunday Telegraph.

"It's unbelievable and given their same surname (Hughes) it's quite terrifying.

"Daniel played a lot of cricket growing up with Phil through the juniors.

"We're all just glad he's OK.''

Tragedy: Phillip Hughes poses for a portrait at the Cricket Australia player camp. Source: News Corp Australia

Langford said that many of the players were still coming to terms with what happened to Phillip, adding yesterday's incident only brought back immediate and raw memories.

Mate this Phil Hughes thing it's gone deeper … you know how it was at the time,'' Langford said.

"It's in the back of everyone's mind now and especially something ironic about last name Hughes and hit in the same spot and everyone was just like 'oh God.'

"But at no stage was he convulsing or throwing up or any of that sort.

"We got him in the club room and then we called an ambulance. He had CT scans and that came back with some good news saying there's no burst (artery).''

Daniel was named to play in a Futures League match at Blacktown on Monday, but he is unlikely to line-up.

Cricket NSW chief executive Andrew Jones said he had spoken to Northern District officials about Daniel's welfare.

"I've also sent him a message but I'd say he just needs a rest and time to recover,'' Jones said.

‘Her pants were around her ankles’

A couple's frisky antics on an Air Canada flight landed them in hot water. Source: Supplied

A FLIGHT attendant has given graphic testimony of a sexual encounter between two passengers on an Air Canada plane.

Jason George Chase, 39, and Alicia Elizabeth Lander, 25, were slapped with charges of indecent acts after the alleged incident during a Toronto to Halifax flight on January 24 last year.

John Dunn, the service director on the flight, gave a descriptive account of their antics on day two of Ms Lander's trial yesterday.

Ms Lander has pleaded not guilty while Mr Chase, who changed his plea from not guilty to guilty, is due in court on March 27. It is unclear whether the two knew each other before boarding the plane.

Mr Dunn testified that about an hour into the two-hour flight, a passenger told him the couple was about to "join the Mile-High Club".

The couple allegedly engaged in mid-flight sex while in their seats, in full view of other passengers Source: Supplied

The flight attendant went to investigate and found Mr Chase and Ms Lander in their seats with a coat draped across their laps, the court heard. Ms Lander's pink G-string was visible between her exposed thighs and Mr Chase's hand was making an up and down gesture, Mr Dunn said.

"Her pants were down around her ankles," he told the court, Canadian Press reported. "I said, 'I want you to stop this now. It's inappropriate.'"

Mr Dunn ordered Ms Lander to get dressed and "put her breasts back inside her bra," before separating the couple for the rest of the flight.

When the captain found out about the lovers' shenanigans, he had the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) meet the plane after landing.

The court heard that when officers tried to escort Ms Lander through the airport to an interview room, she became violent.

RCMP Constable James Curran said she knocked down a sliding door, hit a police officer and punched holes into walls. She also reeked of alcohol.

"At one point she lunged at me as if to bite me," another RCMP officer, Constable Mac Routliffe, told the court.

In addition to the indecent acts charge, Ms Lander faces additional counts of assaulting a police officer, committing an act of mischief and causing a disturbance. Her trial will continue on March 3.

How alcohol really affects you

Do you know how each drink affects your body? Source: ThinkStock

IT'S happened to many of us. Most of us, at one time or another, have said "never again".

Somehow though, we never really remember that throbbing pain, that anxious waking reflection as we mentally audit the activities of the night before, the loss of a day we'll never get back.

In most cases, the hangover subsides and the memories of a "good night" remain. But in some cases, there is a much greater price. Long after the headache subsides, there can be the pain of regret. It might be a friendship ruined, a reputation destroyed or in extreme cases, the loss of an innocent life.

Despite this portrayal, the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows we spend around $14 billion a year on alcohol. To put this in context, that's 14 times what we spend on tea and coffee, 2.8 times what we spend on fashion, 1.3 times what we spend on personal care and 1.5 times what we spend on gadgets.

So how can we enjoy a drink without the regret?

Understanding your BAC

Blood alcohol concentration, or BAC, is how much alcohol you have in grams per 100ml of blood. It's the standard measurement that is used to gauge the effects of alcohol.

We're all familiar with .05, which is the legal limit for the majority of drivers. What we aren't so familiar with is how BAC affects us in other areas.

Examining the table below can be somewhat enlightening and goes some way to explaining the conflicting societal perceptions on alcohol consumption.

How alcohol affects your body, the more you drink. Source: Supplied

In NSW for example, intoxication is defined as a blood-alcohol level of .15. This level reflects high range drink driving and is used in the new 'one punch' laws. Intoxication is the point where many people turn into the stereotypical ugly drunk.

A BAC of .10 is where things start to get rather embarrassing and is usually the point where you are going to lose the next day to the misery of a hangover.

It's important to note that alcohol affects everyone differently and due to their physiological differences women are more affected by alcohol than men advises Michael Thorn, Chief Executive of Foundation for Alcohol and Education (FARE).

"We know that alcohol affects people's judgment increases the likelihood that they will engage in risk-taking behaviour, it can also poison you."

It's hard to stop at just one. Source: Supplied

Awareness is key

From the table above, we can see various behavioural delineations. We can see there's some type of logic and maybe an answer to how we can banish hangovers and anti-social behaviour for good.

So what to do? How do we get awareness and understanding of the effects of alcohol ingrained? It is extremely hard to monitor and calculate what you have been drinking when in a social situation. Add to this, the typical "if this is good, then more is better" approach that people just naturally have, then you can see how problems can happen. One more very often leads to one more.

How technology can help

Enter Boozed? a free, new iPhone app widget which aims to raise awareness and encourage safe, enjoyable drinking. Without needing to unlock your phone, you can record a drink and instantly see how it is going to affect you.

The process takes about two seconds and a single swipe at any time will also show you your current estimated BAC over the next three hours.

"This allows an informed decision whether to have another drink or sit this one out with a water. Not for the purpose of driving, but to ensure safe drinking and an enjoyable night for you and those around you," says its Aussie developer David Walsh.

Boozed? helps you work our your blood alcohol reading. Source: Supplied

So how does it work?

Alcohol distributes itself in the total water of your body. It then gets eliminated mainly by metabolism in your liver.

1. Alcohol is absorbed into the body via the stomach and small intestine. Time varies somewhat depending on a full or empty stomach. The app calculates absorption via a formula based on the time recorded and assumes an absorption rate based on an empty stomach. Full stomach calculations imply the stomach was filled before drinking therefore we err on the side of caution.

2. After being absorbed, alcohol is distributed in the total water of the body. On average males have 58% of their body weight as water and females 49%. This percentage varies, younger people have a higher proportion of body water, though this is more significant for males. Leaner people have more body weight as water and overweight people less. On average, blood itself is composed of 80.6% water. By use of a formula, the BAC can then be calculated.

Could the key to safe enjoyment of alcohol be greater awareness and understanding of the effects of it on our bodies? Source: ThinkStock

3. Alcohol is primarily disposed of by your liver. This takes place at a constant rate per hour, a common average being around a .015 decline in blood alcohol concentration per hour. The prime factor in metabolism rate is recent drinking history, as a healthy liver will generate more enzymes to aid in the process when you drink more frequently over a period of time (usually several months). By calculating the rate and time of metabolism a net BAC can then be calculated at given points in time.

Will it work for you?

"First up, let's be clear that if you are going to drive, then you shouldn't drink," admits Mr Walsh. "This is not about enticing people to use alcohol. It's to ensure that people that have made the adult choice that they want to enjoy alcohol but want to avoid the more negative aspects of drinking."

But what about people who will use the app as a boasting tool for intoxication? They've thought of that, too.

"As soon as you hit .1 users will see a big red BAD reading until you return below this level."

"Around weekends like Australia Day we have to be realistic that people are going to have a few drinks. But people should try to manage their alcohol consumption," says Michael Thorn, Chief Executive of FARE.

"Have some non alcoholic liquids, make sure you space out your drinks, eat some food and look out for friends. Don't do the things that are risky and get you into trouble like driving or swimming while intoxicated. If things like these apps work for the individual then great, but common sense should prevail."

So if you want to avoid a huge hangover this Australia Day long weekend, check out the Boozed? app or just stick to the waters. After all, it was good enough for Don Bradman.

Holy cow it’s a world record

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 22 Januari 2015 | 03.29

The world record for dairy bull semen production is held by the now-deceased US Holstein bull Jenny-Lou Mrshl Toystory. He had 2.4 million "doses" of semen collected from him and has an estimated 500,000 daughters worldwide. Picture: EILEEN DEBRUIN AGRI-GRAPHICS Source: Supplied

TOYSTORY was a hulking 1200kg black and white beast with an ornery temperament and more than 500,000 kids.

The Holstein bull died in December, followed by a touching burial.

Toystory - or Jenny-Lou Mrshl Toystory-ET to his friends - was one of 70 siblings from his own mother Toyane.

The virile and prolific beast left behind more than 500,000 daughters in 50 countries.

And one of those sold for $300,000.

His world was one of inter-species masturbation and artificial insemination.

Through that process, he produced 2.4 million doses of semen, or enough to inseminate 2.4 million cows. He produced more than 1 litre of the stuff in his nine years plying his trade from 2005 ro 2014.

With up to 12 billion sperm per collection, it meant for a lot of little swimmy things.

Genex Cooperative purchased the bull for $4000 at six months of age and a dose of his semen sold for upwards of $60.

The company has remaned the building he was housed in the "Toystory Campus" and vice president of production for the company, Glen Gilbert spoke glowing of the beefy love machine.

"The old adage was as long as he was interested in sex, he wasn't interested in you," he told the Wall Street Journal.

"But if he lost that other interest, you had to be careful." said

"He was very fertile also and he enjoyed his work," according to the Fench Post website.

"He had very good libido. He would come to our collection arena very eager.

"He was very athletic."

Among all bulls in the world, no matter the race, colour or creed, he is the semen king.

There have been less than 50 sires in the exclusive "millionaire's club" - as it is known in the industry - and Toystory smashed the record of previous bovine sperm donor king Skalsummer Sunnyboy, who produced 1.7 doses in the 1990s.

Toystory has been written up in the august non-bull-related journals of record The Times of London and the Wall Street Journal as well as the UK's Daily Mail.

And he has his own Wikipedia entry - but it is only in German, of course.
As well as ornery - the WSJ reported one veterinarian as saying he was "meaner than a snake" - Toystory was a little horny.

He was "collected" up to nine times a week which was double the average for his stable mates.

Mitch Breunig from Mystic Valley Dairy at Sauk City in Wisconsin bred Toystory and named the bull after his daughter's favourite movie.

''For most farms that sell bulls it is right up there,'' he said, ''Having so many people purchase this bull for their herds is humbling.

"People have come from all around the world to see our farm.

"I can go around the world and say Toystory and you have instant credibility with people. It is cool.

''It was the first bull our family every sold to AI so that is remarkable. We will never match this feat.

"I was pretty sad (when he died)."

Dutch Holstein bull Skalsumer Sunny Boy was the semen king until Toystory blew him out of the water. Source: Supplied

While Genex says Toystory had become a household name within the dairy industry regular people probably don't put too much thought into bulls and their prodigious semen production.

What generally happens is the bull is lead into the collection area where a ''teaser'' animal is tied or held in a secure 'crush'.

As bulls don't have the same socialisation as humans, homosexuality is encouraged and the teaser animal is usually a male.

A male is used so as to cancel out the chance of that valuable semen being accidentally "lost".

Then as the bull ''mounts'' the teaser, a man who perhaps has one of the bizarrest jobs in the world slips a fake vagina on his schlong to capture the moment of passion.

According to a paper by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations associate

professional officer H. Schuh the average sperm production of a bull ranges between 3.6 and 12 x 109 sperm per ejaculation.

When the semen is frozen - which most semen used by dairy farmers is - about 20 million total sperm per ''dose'' are required.

That means about 180 to 600 doses of frozen semen per ejaculate.

It is then shipped around the world.

But what does one do when a bull becomes a world record producer of sperm?

''Hats and T-shirts were made to celebrate Toystory's feats,'' Genex said.

"In addition celebration activities were held to thank the employees who care for Toystory daily as well as those who process and distribute Toystory genetics. Yes, a few commemorative semen straws were printed."

Is this the end for Lleyton Hewitt?

Serena Williams is through to the third round of the Australian Open after beating Vera Zvonareva.

10.10 — LLEYTON BLEW IT

Like his tongue, Lleyton Hewitt is out of the Australian Open. Source: AP

LLEYTON Hewitt's stunning exit from the Australian Open is sure to raise questions about whether this was his final appearance at Melbourne Park.

The Aussie champ was absolutely cruising after two sets against Benjamin Becker, leading 6-2 6-1 and on track for an early night.

But the game turned drastically from that point as Becker limited his errors to post a 2-6 1-6 6-3 6-4 6-2 victory.

It's only the second time Becker has made it to the third round of a grand slam in his career and the first since 2006.

That year Becker made it to the fourth round of the US Open — where he knocked out Andre Agassi and ended his career.

Before tonight Hewitt had a record of 15-0 at Melbourne Park when winning the first two sets.

8.55pm — AZARENKA MOVES ON

Victoria Azarenka is a major threat in the women's draw. Source: Getty Images

VICTORIA Azarenka has eliminated eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki and is starting to look like a real chance of making it to at least the quarter finals.

The Belarussian is unseeded as she makes her way back from injury but having won this tournament twice (2012, 2013) will like her chances of at least making it to the final eight — where she's likely to meet Serena Williams.

Azarenka won 6-4 6-2 against Wozniacki in a game that was tighter than the scoreline suggested.

There was an upset in the men's draw tonight when Jerzy Janowicz knocked out 17th seed Gael Monfils 6-5 1-6 6-7 6-3 6-3.

7.20pm — BECKER A GRAND SLAM FLOP

Germany's Benjamin Becker stands in the way of Lleyton Hewitt tonight. Source: AFP

BENJAMIN Becker has won almost $3.5 million in prizemoney during a 10-year career on the ATP Tour and been ranked as high as 35.

But in a startling indication of his inability to shine on the big stage, the current world No. 41 has only ever made it past the second round of a grand slam once.

That came all the way back in 2006, when Becker made it to the fourth round of the US Open in his second appearance at a grand slam.

Since then it's been all first and second round exits, a statistic which should give Aussie Lleyton Hewitt huge confidence as they battle for a spot in the third round of the Australian Open tonight.

7pm — ANDY MURRAY'S WHINEY TWEET

Wipe those tears, Andy. Source: AFP

NOT everyone was impressed by Rafael Nadal's inspiring Australian Open performance last night.

Just ask Andy Murray.

Nadal battled illness and cramp as he came back from the brink to defeat America's Tim Smyczek in five sets.

Murray, a comfortable straight sets winner over Australia's Marinko Matosevic yesterday, took to Twitter this morning to play down Nadal's performance — or at least to complain about the different coverage the Spaniard has received in the press compared to when he also battled cramp to win at the US Open last year.

Have a cry, mate...

6.50pm — SPECIAL K'S FALL IN DOUBLES

Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis lost in the first round of the doubles tournament. Source: Getty Images

NICK Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis couldn't deliver the same magic they've provided in the singles when combining in the doubles this evening.

The pair dubbed the Special K's lost in three sets to more experienced duo Andrey Golubev and Denis Istomin 3-6 6-2 2-6.

It was a typically entertaining performance from Kyrgios. He produced a miracle between-the-legs shot to win a point early in the match but was also warned for misconduct.
