DANIEL Hughes has survived an almost identical blow to the head which killed his former teammate Phillip Hughes, during a first grade cricket match yesterday.
Leaving officials and onlookers in shock and holding their collective breath, Daniel, one of the state's most promising young batsmen and boyfriend of Nine TV reporter Erin Molan, was rushed to Hornsby hospital after he was left unconscious after suffering a direct hit to the back of his neck, underneath his cricket helmet.
Batting for Northern Districts against Blacktown at Mark Taylor Oval, Hughes attempted a hook shot off a first ball bouncer from bowler Cameron Nupier, ironically the same shot which resulted in the death of his namesake last November.

The impact of the ball on Daniel's neck was just millimetres from the same main artery which killed Phillip Hughes.
However unlike Phillip, who collapsed at the crease, a stunned and concussed Daniel, who also plays in the Big Bash with the Sydney Thunder, dropped his hands onto his knees as concerned opposition and teammates raced to his aid.
"His neck was swelling up and we thought 'oh God','' Northern Districts president Mike Langford said.
The incident occurred at 10.21am yesterday with play suspended until Hughes was assisted from the pitch and an ambulance called.
Molan received a phone call from worried Northern Districts officials as she was completing her commitments on the Today Show.
"I got a call saying he's been hit in the head with a ball, he's collapsed and there's an ambulance on the way, you've got to get here,'' Molan said.
"I don't think I've ever been so scared in my life.''
Hughes underwent a series of tests and CT scans before being cleared of any major damage and omitted from hospital.
He was resting at home last night.
"He's got the lump on the side of his head the size of a cricket ball, its horrendous,'' Molan told The Sunday Telegraph.
"It's unbelievable and given their same surname (Hughes) it's quite terrifying.
"Daniel played a lot of cricket growing up with Phil through the juniors.
"We're all just glad he's OK.''

Langford said that many of the players were still coming to terms with what happened to Phillip, adding yesterday's incident only brought back immediate and raw memories.
Mate this Phil Hughes thing it's gone deeper … you know how it was at the time,'' Langford said.
"It's in the back of everyone's mind now and especially something ironic about last name Hughes and hit in the same spot and everyone was just like 'oh God.'
"But at no stage was he convulsing or throwing up or any of that sort.
"We got him in the club room and then we called an ambulance. He had CT scans and that came back with some good news saying there's no burst (artery).''
Daniel was named to play in a Futures League match at Blacktown on Monday, but he is unlikely to line-up.
Cricket NSW chief executive Andrew Jones said he had spoken to Northern District officials about Daniel's welfare.
"I've also sent him a message but I'd say he just needs a rest and time to recover,'' Jones said.
