Hewitt caps big day for Aussies

Lleyton Hewitt has made it seven Aussie men into the second round of the Australian Open, the first time that's happened since 2003.

Casey Dellacqua struggled in the lead-up events, but managed to beat Austrian Yvonne Meusburger in her first round match on Margaret Court Arena.

Sam Stosur has overcame some early nerves to breeze into the second round at Melbourne Park.

LLEYTON Hewitt has reached the second round for the first time since 2012 after defeating China's Ze Zhang on Rod Laver Arena.

Hewitt needed four sets to see off the wildcard and book his place in the second round, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-0, 6-4 on day two at Melbourne Park.

It capped a big day for Australia after fellow big names Sam Stosur and Casey Dellacqua also progressed.

Dellacqua, the 29th seed had little trouble beating Austrian Yvonne Meusberger 6-4, 6-0 while Stosur, the 20th seed, was equally impressive against Monica Niculescu, winning 6-4 6-1.

Stosur worked into the contest using her power and prowess at the net to upset her opponent.

"The start of the match was pretty tricky obviously she plays a little bit unorthodox so it took a while for me to get used to that get used to the slices," Stosur said.

"Not too many people slice the forehand every time, it stays very low you've got to really move your feet and get up to it."

Olivia Rogowska wasn't able to keep the Aussie winning streak going on day three.

For the ninth consecutive year Novak Djokovic has won the opening round of the Australian Open in straight sets.

The youngster had an early break in the first set against American Nicole Gibbs but couldn't hold on.

It only got worse in the second set as she fell 6-4, 6-1.

On Margaret Court Arena, Serena Williams cruised to a straight sets win over Alison van Uytvanck.

The world No.1 booked a second round ticket 6-0, 6-4.

Caroline Wozniacki had to fend off a charge from teenager Taylor Townsend in her first round match.

Earlier, Novak Djokovic wasted little time booking his ticket into the second round against Slovenia's Aljaz Bedene. The No.1 seed cruised through 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 on centre court.

Defending Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka is also through following a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Turkey's Marcel Ilhan.

Unseeded Victoria Azarenka dismissed Sloane Stephens in an eagerly awaited Round 1 match-up, winning 6-3 6-2.

However, the seeds continued to fall in the women's draw as 13th seed Andrea Petkovic crashed out.

Day 2 of the Australian Open has seen wins for Milos Roanic, Kei Nishikori, Stan Wawrinka and Victoria Azarenka.

The German had served for the match in the second set but fell apart against American Madison Brengle, losing 7-5, 6-7, 3-6.

Italian 12th seed Flavia Pennetta couldn't escape the carnage as she lost to compatriot Camile Giorgi in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 3-6.

Jelena Jankovic was also sent packing after a disastrous 6-1, 6-4 loss to Swiss Timea Bacsinszky.

Elsewhere, it was easier for big names Kei Nishikori, Petra Kvitova, David Ferrer and Victoria Azarenka who all breezed through to the second round.
