ISIS the building company mistaken for terrorists

Written By Unknown on Senin, 29 September 2014 | 04.30

What's it like to live under the rule of the extremist group known as the Islamic State, or ISIS? WSJ looks at the situation in Raqqa, Syria, through the eyes of two activists and through the lens of ISIS propaganda videos.

A NATIONAL construction company could be forced to change its name of 25 years because staff members are being abused as "terrorists".

ISIS Group Australia — an Australian company that has specialised in commercial office fit-outs and refurbishments since 1989 — has been forced to scale back signage on worksites and asked workers to not wear uniforms branded with the company name.

It comes as a Sydney family has been urged to change the name of their eight-year-old girl, whose name is Isis.

In recent weeks, site workers have been abused as "terrorists" by passers-by and angry messages have been left on the company's office line.

"Hey you terrorist bastards, I hope you bastards all die in Iraq, you terrorist al-Qaeda bastards, you ISIS pieces of s**t," one message said.

ISIS chief executive Michael Barnes said he was upset that "ill-informed members of the public" had mistaken the company for the terrorist group wreaking havoc in the Middle East.

The terrorist group previously went by the acronym ISIS — or Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham — but is also variously known as ISIL and IS.

Mr Barnes said the company took the safety of its workers and subcontractors "very seriously".

"In recent weeks we have instructed our workers to stop wearing ISIS-branded clothing and are also in the process of scaling back on-site branding to limit attention from misinformed people and ensure the safety of our employees," Mr Barnes said.

"We are upset that what we stand for is becoming eroded by the Islamic State."

Mr Barnes said it was possible the company may be forced to change its name if the abuse did not stop.

"We will continue to monitor how our clients, staff, consultants and subcontractors feel about perceptions around our name and react accordingly," he said.

Marketing specialist and associate director of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, Associate Professor Rachel Kennedy, said the confusion could ironically present an opportunity for the company.

"Use it as a talking point — it's really hard for companies to get their brands noticed at all, so they could say 'yeah, it's crazy isn't it, but we're just furniture fitout specialists'," Prof Kennedy said.

"It's not a situation that you would ever intentionally put yourself in, but getting your brand noticed at all is a hard task, so build up the link between the brand and the work you do."

Prof Kennedy said she believed very few people would form the link between the terror group and company, and urged its chiefs to hold firm against a name change.

"Some people don't think that much and it would be a tiny few that are making that connection out of context," she said.

The terrorist group once known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is now seen as the most dangerous extremist group in the world.

"Their buyers are likely to be able to differentiate in the context of when they're looking for someone to do a fitout versus the terrorist organisation."

The ISIS Group employs more than 300 staff, with offices in every state and territory and a turnover of more than $500 million a year.

Dally M red carpet hits and misses

Jodi Anasta and retired West Tigers star Braith Anasta set the standard on the red carpet at the Dally M awards.

Fox Sports' Matt Russell runs through the frontrunners for the 2014 Dally M Awards.

Johnathan Thurston is the red-hot favourite for the 2014 Dally M Medal, but if anyone is to catch him, the experts are tipping it will be Jarryd Hayne, who has an outstanding year at fullback for the Parramatta Eels.

THE NRL's night of nights, the Dally M Awards, is in full swing at The Star in Sydney this evening.

It's the one night of the year when the rugby league WAGs get to outsparkle and outdazzle their other halves and, as always, all eyes were on who wore what on that ruby rug.

The wives and girlfriends of our NRL stars were primping and preening all afternoon at The Darling Hotel to ensure they were red carpet ready in time,

MORE: Who will take out the Dally M Medal for 2014?

This year's annual player awards night boasts a star-studded list of guests and presenters including Olympic and Commonwealth champion hurdler Sally Pearson and Aussie swimming champs Cate and Bronte Campbell.

Stay tuned for all of the glitz and glamour from the 2014 red carpet below.

Queen WAG and fashion favourite Terry Biviano has arrived. The 39-year-old shoe designer descended upon The Star with husband of two years Anthony Minichiello, captain of the Sydney Roosters who ended his record-breaking 302 game career at ANZ Stadium on Friday night.

Never one to shy away from making a bold fashion statement, Biviano stunned in a revealing, white Pallas Couture gown that featured plenty of cut-outs. "It is definitely easier to not have to dress the bump," she told Confidential, referring to last year's event where she was pregnant with her first child.

"This year my dress is a bit more full-on. It is really modern, sexy and sleek. We are pushing the boundaries. Actually I'm a little scared."

Paying tribute to her husband's 14 years as a professional NRL player, she said: "The star attraction this year is going to be my husband.

"It's not only an opportunity to celebrate the great year he and his team have had but it's also a time to celebrate his amazing career.

"It will be the last Dally M's, but all good things must come to an end."

Instead of a long flowing frock, Jessica Mauboy opted for a white, strapless Steven Khalil number.

"I'm such a big fan of this game, my heart has always been with it, so I will be roaming the room to say hi to as many players as I can," she said ahead of the event.

Jodi Anasta, former Home and Away star and wife of former Wests Tigers player Braith Anasta, arrived wearing local designer J'Aton Couture.

The mum-of-one hit the red carpet with her footballer husband wearing the floor-length, pearl beaded gown with plunging neckline and thigh high split.

"It will be (Braith's) last awards because of his retirement so it will be a big night for us," the 29-year-old told Confidential ahead of the evening.

The glittery frock was a total winner, and quite unlike anything else that was donned this year.

Hackers at war over Emma Watson

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 28 September 2014 | 04.30

The pranksters behind a hoax site threatening to release nude photos of actress Emma Watson have come under attack from internet message board 4chan. Source: AFP

THE serial pranksters known as SocialVevo chose the wrong online community to mess with.

The group was behind EmmaYouAreNext.com, a countdown site promising to release nudes of Harry Potter star Emma Watson. That's just the beginning. A photo of the SocialVevo servers, obtained by users of 4chan's imageboard /b/, apparently connects them to more than 30 internet pranks built off news trends.

TODAY: JENNIFER LAWRENCE NUDE PHOTO LEAK HAPPENS AGAIN

RELATED: EMMA WATSON NUDE PHOTOS SITE WAS A HOAX BY SOCIAL VEVO

EARLIER: EMMA WATSON COULD BE NEXT VICTIM IN NUDE PHOTO SCANDAL

The goal of all these pranks was to drum up publicity and business for SocialVevo's marketing products.

SocialVevo attempted to pin the blame for the Emma Watson leak on 4chan, an 11-year-old community where nothing is sacred. 4chan is where some of the Internet's most notorious pranks are concocted, and it's well known for its obsession with Emma Watson — so it makes sense that 4chan might be behind that creepy countdown.

So 4chan hit back: It defaced the website for SocialVevo's latest ruse, Rantic.com, and uncovered new evidence connecting the group to some of the Internet's most recent hoaxes.

And it's game on. Source: Supplied

/b/ released an image showing folders for each of SocialVevo's pranks, including Rantic.com, the group's latest rebranding effort. (SocialVevo is also known as Swenzy.)

The folder caused quite a stir online. Source: Supplied

The following is a brief breakdown of some of the websites featured in the image above:

Rememberthe13th.com: A fake NASA site that promised to release a stunning scientific discovery. The site was created during the government shutdown last October. Because most NASA employees were prohibited from working during the shutdown, Rememberthe13th.com ended up collecting some social media traction before some Reddit sleuths discovered it was a hoax.

BriansAnnouncement.com: Following the on-screen death of Family Guy dog Brian, SocialVevo created a website that featured a countdown to some big announcement. Despite having no tangible connection to Family Guy or Fox, news organisations like CNN, Time, and Gawker ran stories covering the site. The site ended up being a lie after Fox told TVLine that the site was a "hoax and was not created by anyone connected to the show".

RockStarAnnouncment.com: A few weeks after BriansAnnouncement.com flopped, SocialVevo tried to capitalise on the Grand Theft Auto V buzz by promising to leak photos of the next instalment of the video game series.

Still messing around. Source: Supplied

FoxWeekly.com: In May 2014, after media organisations caught on to what SocialVevo was up to, the group decided to launch a "news site" consisting of stolen content. FoxWeekly is a blog that swipes and republishes articles from the BBC, Fox News, and the New York Times.

Rantic.com rose to prominence last week after some Reddit, 4chan, and 8chan users connected it to EmmaYouAreNext.com. I contacted one of the SocialVevo founders to find out if the connections between each were legitimate.

"[T]hose 4channers are just eating on that article you published about the fox site," he told me via Skype chat Tuesday afternoon. "[M]e and simon [one of the other alleged founders of SocialVevo] are trying to find out who owns the countdown too. [I]t started in 4chan. [W]e keep getting our emails hacked by 4chan users and ppl emailing us about the countdown its [sic] annoying as f**k."

Hours after this conversation, the countdown on EmmaYouAreNext.com stopped, and the site redirected to Rantic.com, which had abandoned its minimalistic design in favour of this:

This means online war. Source: Supplied

All smoke, no fire. Source: Supplied

These threats didn't go over well with 4chan.

On Friday, /b/ gained access to rantic.com and defaced it.

This is why they can't have nice things. Source: Supplied

Desperate to regain control of its site, SocialVevo sent out the following messages on Rantic's Twitter account:

A peace offering? Source: Supplied

The apology was too late.

In a now deleted /b/ thread, anonymous 4chan users gained access to FoxWeekly's Wordpress CMS and began messing with its site.

Not getting off that easily. Source: Supplied

Why isn’t Australia in the space race?

India's low-cost mission to Mars successfully enters the red planet's orbit, crowning what Prime Minister Narendra Modi said was a near impossible push to complete the trip on its maiden attempt. Sarah Toms reports.

THE future slapped Australians in the face last week, and no, it wasn't the release of the new iPhone.

India managed to get a spacecraft into orbit around Mars, on its first try, for just $80 million dollars. India!

The same week Joe Hockey announced that his first year as Treasurer delivered a budget deficit of $48.5 billion, or the equivalent of 600 Mars-bound probes.

And it has come hot on the heels of the Government throwing $630 million — or eight Mars missions — behind a boost to anti-terror forces and intelligence gathering.

Martian — not jihadist — intelligence gathering will be the focus of Australia's pre-eminent space researchers in Adelaide this week.

They are meeting for the 14th annual Australian Space Research Conference and Mars will be at the top of the agenda.

Just days before India secured their Martian milestone, NASA's latest craft also entered orbit of the Red Planet.

For those counting, that's two spacecraft patrolling Martian skies right now — the same number of Collins class submarines that are typically out of Australian dry docks at any one time.

Graziella Caprarelli, Associate Professor of Space Science at UniSA, says simple curiosity drives study of Mars.

"What motivates all these missions is the search for life," she said.

"Looking for life on another planet is innate in humans. We don't want to be alone."

India's success made them only the fourth team to put a craft into orbit around Mars, following missions from NASA, the Soviets and the Europeans.

And India managed it on their first try — something that not even the Americans or Europeans could do.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi couldn't hide his delight.

"The odds were stacked against us. Of the 51 missions attempted across the world so far, a mere 21 had succeeded," he said.

"But we have prevailed!"

India's success has been remarkable for its price and speed.

Even in an era that NASA pursues bang-for-buck, the American Martian mission cost almost 10 times as much as the Indians'.

And it took about three times as long.

The first image taken by India's Mars Orbiter Mission spacecraft shows the surface of Mars from a height of 7300m. Source: AFP

NASA's Mars mission was announced in September 2008, taking six years to reach the planet's orbit.

Then-Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced the country's Mars aspirations in August 2012. A little over two years later, the first photos from Martian orbit arrived in Delhi.

Both the American and Indian missions are focused on solving the mysteries of the Martian atmosphere.

While Earth is surrounded by a rich, thick atmosphere of mainly oxygen and nitrogen, Mars is clad in a thin layer of mostly carbon dioxide.

But there are also traces of methane, which the sensors of the Indian craft will soon be inhaling for analysis.

"The large contributor of methane on Earth is living things," said Ms Caprarelli.

"By looking at the distribution of methane around the planet scientists hope to figure out if there are some areas where to this day methane is being released and whether that indicates some kind of microbial activity."

Indian engineers work on the Mars orbiter spacecraft at the Indian Space Research Organisation last year. Picture: AP Source: AP

Ms Caprarelli is more interested in the rocks, valleys and mountains on Mars, which include the incredible 22km-high Mount Olympus.

"We are looking at traces of past life that could be recorded in the rocks, a lot like what the early palaeontologists have done for Planet Earth when they went around finding fossils," she said.

"From the fossils they could reconstruct what types of animals and plants existed."

Japan's doing it, China's doing it, India's doing it.

Why can't Australia have a space program?

A 2008 Senate Committee report noted that Australia "should be playing a larger role" in tapping into global space industry revenues estimated at $US250 billion.

But since then only limited progress has been made, delivering mainly a principles document and satellite policy.

"We are now being surrounded in our own backyard by countries that demonstrate that those missions are doable even for very little funding," Ms Caprarelli said.

"And the technology acquired during these missions is invaluable for the development of niche industry."

Australia doesn't have a Minister for Space, and the responsibilities previously held by the Minister for Science now fall within the portfolio of Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane.

But space might have more to do with industry than you think.

"Some people may be interested in the possibility of exploring for the purpose of exploitation, for example, of mineral resources," Ms Caprarelli said.

"That's not something that motivates me personally, but from the applicative viewpoint certainly there will be businesses that have been considering whether it's possible to mine other planets or asteroids or explore the solar system for the purposes of resources."

Letters to death row: ‘My prison pen pal’

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 27 September 2014 | 04.29

HIS story inspired a hit documentary and won him a raft of supporters.

But long before Life and Death Row made him famous, convicted murderer Robert Pruett already had an anti-death penalty campaigner on his side — Ines Aubert.

The Swiss mother-of-three, who began writing to the 35-year-old more than 12 years ago, said no-one deserved the death penalty, and everyone needed human contact.

The pair have met several times and Mrs Aubert is an avid anti-death penalty campaigner who has also written to three other inmates and even met their victims.

Mrs Aubert, who has met Pruett several times, became his pen pal after becoming involved with Swiss organisation Lifespark which arranges pen pal-ships to US inmates on death row.

The special needs teacher told news.com.au that she became involved in the organisation not only because she is against the death penalty but because she felt she wanted to give back to those who were so much worse off than herself.

The 53-year-old also said she wanted a challenge when she began writing to Pruett and her focus wasn't just on the offenders, but in the best case and if possible, also meeting their victims and helping them heal.

"Robert is very dear to me," she said.

"His story is not unique as far as his bad childhood goes. There are so many who seem to never have had a real chance to succeed in life. Robert could easily have gone unnoticed by the world like most death row prisoners do. They live and die without anyone noticing it."

Pruett was originally sentenced to life in prison, or 99 years, when he was just 15 years old, over the murder of neighbour Ray Yarborough, who was killed by his father.

The then teenager was said to be present at the killing, but his father testified that he had no part in the killing, The Express reported.

But it was the killing of prison guard Daniel Nagle in 1999 - attributed to Robert - that saw him given the death penalty, which was set for May last year.

University student Kelly Hickman tried to get him a stay of execution as part of her volunteering work at the University of Houston's death row clinic, and it was her story which formed the basis of the BBC documentary.

His supporters claim there is a lack of evidence.

Mrs Aubert doesn't believe he deserves to die, and not only maintains a website for him, but passes on letters and emails, and is his window to the world.

She said she's always had a strong interest in humanity, having volunteered with organisations for disabled people, and other causes since her teenage years.

It was this interest which saw her get involved in Lifespark.

"I feel very grateful for everything that worked out well in my life and for the gifts I was given," she said.

"I grew up in a safe country and in a safe environment and family. I didn't meet most of the difficult situations our pen pals on death row tell us about," she said, adding she felt a lot of solidarity with those who weren't so lucky.

But it hasn't always been rosy with her pen pal.

"When I got to know him, Robert had some racial ideologies that I actually found disgusting," she said.

"So, I considered it a challenge to deal with a young man with opinions so different from mine.

"Robert was 22 years old when I got to know him. He had just arrived on death row and so I could watch him grow into the man he is today. We had a lot of ups and downs, but we never stopped writing, very often and very regularly."

Pruett as he appears in Life and Death Row. Picture: Screengrab/BBC Source: Supplied

She also visits his father who is also in prison, and sometimes his mother and brother Steven, who has a life sentence like his father, too.

Mrs Aubert remains committed to the Lifespark project which she said was so important.

"Our pen pals confirm every day how precious the pen pal-ships are to them," she said.

"The analogy "window to the world" is often used. Through our letters we bring the world into their cells. Also, by recognising them as human beings and as worthy to be considered a friend we give them back some humanity."

And she also realises if Pruett was in the real world, the pair wouldn't be friends and would have a very different relationship.

"People can feel very close only through exchanging letters but I'm very aware that the relationship is not 'street-proof' meaning it will never have to pass the test in the free world," she said.

"Would the inmates really choose us as their friends if they had a choice? I doubt it."

She said forgiveness remains important and she has even met Pruett's victims, who while they don't agree with her, they remained constructive.

"In the case of another pen pal of mine — he died of cancer four years ago — I met a woman who he had kidnapped and raped when she was a girl. She was happy to hear that he had friends like myself and that he had matured a lot and found peace," she said.

Mrs Aubert said while she never agreed with the death penalty she did agree with prison but that there should always remain the option of rehabilitation and growth, something she said Pruett has developed.

"To me, life is a row of lessons and its purpose is that we grow and mature. This happens through self-examination and through the exchange with other people, books, programs etc," she said.

"Even those in prison can continue to grow and mature like the example of Robert shows."

‘AFP officer spooked by GF flyover’

The Virgin plane flies low over the MCG Picture: David Caird. Source: News Corp Australia

COLLINGWOOD president Eddie McGuire says he saw an AFP officer reach for a gun when a Virgin Australia plane flew low over the MCG as part of the Grand Final celebrations.

Footy fans and Melburnians have slammed Virgin Australia for the hair-raising sponsorship stunt which formed part of the pre-match entertainment.

McGuire says the incident spoked an AFP officer he was seated near.

"I was sitting about 10 metres away from the foreign defence minister Julie Bishop and can I tell you, when the Virgin plane flew over the top of the MCG, I looked around and the secret service bloke from the federal police reached for the gun because no one had told him," McGuire told Fox Footy.

"This bloke, he went for the gun. I'm serious, mate. I don't know what he was going to do with it, pop it out of the sky," he added.

The colourful media personality's comments come in the wake of the Twitter storm that erupted

after an A330 airbus flew over the stadium at low altitude before the first bounce.

Crowds outside gasped when the plane roared over the top of the stadium.

LIVE: FOLLOW THE ACTION FROM THE MCG

AFL fan Nicole said she was scared by the low-flying plane.

"That was really low. Pretty crazy."

Mark from Melbourne tweeted: "We are in a state of high terror alert. All for the sake of

sponsorship with no warning to the city. STUPID."

"GEE @virginaustralia stupid time to fly over the MCG. You know, because terrorism."

However other fans were delighted with the stunt.

"I love a good flyover nonetheless! what a good spectacle at the ground," tweeted Riley Toms.

Fans at the ground cheered at the jet as commentators confirmed it was as a pre-organised marketing stunt.

Virgin Australia quickly moved to stem fears by tweeting to worried Melburnians online that the flight path had be prearranged.

Virgin Australia spokeswoman Emma King said the flight is operated in strict accordance with Civil Aviation Safety Authority requirements by three senior pilots.

"Virgin Australia is the official airline of the AFL and as a show of support for the game we operate a special flight over the MCG on Grand Final day each year," she said.

There were no passengers on board.

Ferguson: Protesters march on police

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 26 September 2014 | 04.30

WSJs Lee Hawkins discusses the video apology issued by Tom Jackson, police chief of Ferguson, Mo. in regard to controversy surrounding the shooting of Michael Brown. Photo:

PROTESTERS have been arrested as they marched on the Ferguson police station and demanded the police chief resign.

Several people were taken into custody after a scuffle broke out near where the embattled police chief Thomas Jackson was speaking with protesters.

The unrest has sparked concern that Ferguson, the St Louis suburb plagued by violence and protest since the shooting of an unarmed teen, could be headed for further conflict.

Michael Brown was shot dead in Ferguson on August 9 by a white police officer, sparking nightly protests in the small town and igniting a national debate about race relations.

Mr Jackson met with protesters and briefly marched with them, but was quickly escorted away when the fighting began.

At one stage protesters — who were calling for him to resign — linked arms and refused to move outside the police station. Others stood protectively around as individuals were spoken to by police.

The uneasy standoff continued for several hours with armed police at one point standing shoulder to shoulder in front of the police department with the chanting protesters only metres away.

Earlier, Mr Jackson released a video where he apologised for the August 9 shooting of Mr Brown.

"For any mistakes I have made, I take full responsibility," Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson said in the online video.

"I am truly sorry for the loss of your son," he added, addressing Brown's parents.

The college-bound teen was shot at least six times by police officer Darren Wilson and his body was left in the street for several hours before it was removed.

"I'm also sorry that it took so long to remove Michael from the street," Mr Thomas added.

"Please know that the investigating officers meant no disrespect," he said, adding "they were simply trying to do their jobs".

The Ferguson protests got so bad the state government was forced to call in the National Guard to help bring the situation under control Source: Supplied

Violence rocked Ferguson — a St Louis suburb of 21,000 with an African-American majority and an overwhelmingly white police department and town council — prompting Missouri Governor Jay Nixon to briefly call in the National Guard to quell protests.

Some demonstrators complained that police used undue force against peaceful protests, which Mr Thomas also apologised for.

"I'm also aware of the pain and the feeling of mistrust felt in some of the African American community towards the police department," he added. "It is clear we have much work to do."

Circumstances of Brown's death are contested, with police claiming that Brown, accused of stealing a box of cigars, was shot after a struggle with Mr Wilson.

But other witnesses say the teenager put his hands up to surrender before Mr Wilson opened fire.

JESS contracted a sudden, vicious bout of common sense, Sam took off most of her clothes and Blake forgot where he parked his car.

All that and more in our recap of The Bachelor, or as it should be called this week, Meet the Parents. Read on ...

Last night's recap

Jessica gets steamy

LOUISE'S FAMILY

Blake links up with Louise in Thredbo, which is exciting, because he's never seen snow before.

"It's so crisp and white, and you just look across the mountains and you see it there. It's something that's seriously out of a movie for me," he says. How very amazing. You'd swear he'd just laid eyes on a real, live unicorn.

They do all the generic snow things together — snow angels, a snowball fight and a sled race. Actually, the whole afternoon is pretty racy, as Blake and Louise can't stop snogging each other. Geez, Louise.

Snog three. Count 'em! Source: Channel 10

Understandably, as he thrashes around in the snow, Blake says he feels ridiculous.

"Don't! There's no one else here, just me," Louise replies. Apparently cameramen don't count as people.

When playtime is over, they brace themselves for the much-anticipated family meeting, and Louise does her best to ease Blake's nerves.

"I do have three brothers. Very strong, very confident, they're very protective," she says.

"This is a veeeery important thing for me. Veeeery important. If my family doesn't approve then I don't approve."

No pressure then.

"If my brothers don't like you, we're pretty much done." Source: Channel 10

"That sounds ... fair?" Source: Channel 10

Blake's dinner date with destiny starts well enough, as Louise's starry-eyed mother appears to seriously consider stealing him for herself.

"Blake is definitely easy on the eye," she tells the camera. "I can see why Louise likes him."

The father is much more intimidating, particularly after Blake spills champagne on his pants.

"I look at people's body language and how they handle themselves," Dad says. "Probably give me half an hour or an hour, and I can see whether it will last or is just a brief thing."

I wonder what Mr Body Language Expert thought of that "eye-rubbing" episode with Laurina last week?

"So, Blake ... how do you feel about older women? Source: Channel 10

"Spill any more drinks on me and you're a dead man." Source: Channel 10

After some brief one-on-one bonding, Louise's dad gives Blake his blessing.

"I didn't see that there was any fakeness there. Yes, he's smooth, yes he's got all of those good looks and all that, but let's cut through that. He was genuine, he looked me in the eye, he shook my hand. I can't ask for any more."

Well, you could ask him not to spill champagne on you. Or to make up his damn mind and stop stringing your daughter along. Or to offer up some sort of dowry. A goat, perhaps.

Having achieved victory in his charm offensive, Blake farewells Louise with yet another pash, and rides off into the sunrise to find one of his other girlfriends.

"It was so hard to see Blake go, because I knew he was going to meet other families. It's very confronting," Louise says. You don't say?

"Babe, it's been like, three minutes since our last pash. Come here." Source: Channel 10

SAM'S FAMILY

Blake's reunion with Sam is a festival of deep sighs and excited squeals.

"The butterflies are definitely going," Sam says. Remember the butterflies? They first attacked during that date at The Tea Room in Sydney, when she dropped some mints down her dress. No danger of that this time, because Blake and Sam are stripping down to their swimwear and lounging around in a hot spring. Steamy Jess would be proud.

"I'm glad to see you're wearing your lovely necklace," Blake says. We all know what he actually means: "I'm glad you're wearing hardly anything."

"Well, this is new." Source: Channel 10

"I love what you're not wearing." Source: Channel 10

Once their clothes are back on, Blake approaches Sam's family with a bouquet of flowers, which is much larger than the one he gave to Louise's folks. That's definitely a sign. Louise may as well give up right now.

Ten people are waiting for the jolly couple inside — good luck remembering all those names, Blake — but the most important of them is Sam's sister. She leads him into the knife-laden kitchen for a private interrogation.

"Are you falling for Sam?" she asks, surrounded by potential murder weapons.

"I should let you know that I am falling for Sam," Blake responds. That answer seems to earn her approval.

"Blake, would you mind accompanying me to the kitchen? I want to grill you." Source: Channel 10

"He honestly comes across as quite a genuine person," she tells Sam later. "I can really sense from him that he's falling for you. I can definitely see him being a part of our family."

At this point, we've been watching the show for about half an hour without witnessing a mental breakdown. In other words, we're in the middle of a severe tear drought. So, even though everything has gone perfectly, Sam decides to chuck a fit.

"I was really happy, but I'm terrified as well," she says as Blake prepares to leave. "It just felt so good having you in my home, with my family, but then I just have to remember that it is what it is."

That outburst is followed by the most excruciating silence since Laurina decided to yap about the Melbourne property market.

So much for happy families. Source: Channel 10

As always, Blake interprets his girlfriend's deep, emotional confession as a refusal to open up.

"I'm being as vulnerable as I can and letting her know what I feel, and she couldn't return that," he whines.

"I'm confused. After all we've gone through and everything we've done, she's doubting herself. She's doubting us and our connection together."

Of course she's doubting herself, you twit. You're dating three other women.

"I am leaning back to show my displeasure." Source: Channel 10

LISA'S FAMILY

Lisa's hometown is Noosa, so if Blake has any sense, he'll declare her the winner right now. There are certainly worse places to live.

"I've only ever brought one guy home, and I dated him for four years before he got to meet the family," she says. Talk about a change of pace.

Blake appears in a tank top, strolling nonchalantly along the beach, and Lisa laughs deliriously at his puny arm muscles.

"Time to stop hugging now Lisa, my arms are getting tired." Source: Channel 10

There's nothing puny about her house though.

"It's huuuuuuuuge!" Blake yells as they approach the megamansion in a pair of kayaks. Yes, it's accessible via kayak — that's how loaded Lisa's family is. Now would be a good time to start digging for gold, Blake.

Lisa clearly comes from a humble background. Source: Channel 10

"That house of yours is oarsome." Source: Channel 10

The Bachelor shares a barbecue with Lisa's dad, mum and sister. They all seem pretty laid back, and I'm too busy salivating over the food to pay attention to the conversation, so let's presume he's making a good impression.

When the two lovers reconvene outside afterwards, Lisa tells Blake she's properly serious about their relationship.

"You know I don't always talk about (that), but I mean it when I say it," she says. Then they pash. And pash. And pash.

This date has been an unmitigated success, and I say so without any of that "tongue in cheek" nonsense. Although obviously, Blake's tongue is firmly embedded in Lisa's cheek right now.

"You can't expect me to conduct a coherent conversation with this food wafting sumptuous scents at me." Source: Channel 10

"Babe, that's not how a piggyback works." Source: Channel 10

JESSICA'S FAMILY

Blake meets Jessica at Ocean Beach on the NSW Central Coast. He says he wants to come up with a more comprehensive picture of his relationship with Jess going forward, but we already know what it would be like — lots of lusty staring, breathless talking and raw sexual tension without any remotely interesting conversation.

As they share fish and chips at the end of the pier, the world's most wistful person says something typically ... sensible?

"I would want to date for a period of time before, say, living together," Jess says.

"You still need to keep that independence. If you lose yourself in a relationship, then the relationship isn't capable of sustaining only one person for being who they originally were."

"Oh dear. I think I might be coming down with a case of common sense." Source: Channel 10

Moving on from that shocking dose of realism, they drive to Jess's parents' house, where her father immediately fixates on the one thing that matters in a potential son-in-law.

"It was nice to receive a firm handshake," he says.

The boys decide to go fishing while the girls prepare dinner — no, this show definitely doesn't promote sexist stereotypes. Blake, who must be sick of answering awkward questions by now, goes on the offensive instead.

"Mmm, firm hands. You're OK, kiddo." Source: Channel 10

"Do you think Jess is ready for something serious? Ready for something lasting?" he asks. That's followed by a loooooong silence.

"Gee, ahh, umm, I think Jess's dream will be to find the right person. And I think when she does, she'll be ready," Dad responds. Eventually.

The tension continues at dinner, as Jess's mum tries to get her head around the whole "one guy dating four girls" thing.

"In real life, dating four women at the same time would be ..." she starts.

"Something I wouldn't do," Blake interjects.

What? This is real life. That's why they call it reality TV, right?

"Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm." Source: Channel 10

"In real life, my daughter would never have met this bloke and we wouldn't have to deal with all this palava." Source: Channel 10

After dinner, Blake and Jess chat on the porch.

"I feel I'm ready for something ... for something longer lasting," Blake says, as though he's auditioning to appear in one of those ads for premature ejaculation products.

They kiss for a while — bet you didn't see that coming — and then Blake walks off into the night, never to be seen again. At least, not until the commercial break finishes.

"Are ... are you trying to tell me something about your sex life?" Source: Channel 10

THE ROSE CEREMONY

And so we reach the 576th edition of "our most tense rose ceremony yet".

"I had such a good time at my hometown, and I hope Blake did as well," Lisa tells the camera. Of course he had a good time, Lisa. It's Noosa. The place exists for the sole purpose of showing people a good time.

As if to prove that point, Blake gives Lisa the first rose.

Louise: "Hey Blake, check out this top. Definitely roseworthy, don't you think?" Source: Channel 10

Louise gets the next one, because she has the unfair advantage of living near snow, and snow is just the coolest. That leaves Jess and Sam. Blake asks the former to step outside with him.

"My head tells me that you're not ready for the love that I'm looking for, and I'd like you to tell me if I'm the man for you," he says. Jess foolishly persists with her new-found sensibleness.

"True, long, deep, lasting love isn't something you can rush. It's not a process you can just turn on," she says.

Jess goes back inside, but Blake stays in the garden for a while. He seems to have forgot where he parked his car.

"I left my soppiness at home tonight. I'm soooo sorry Blake." Source: Channel 10

"Dude, seriously, where's my car?" Source: Channel 10

Finally, Blake rejoins the four Bachelorettes. He picks up the last rose. He looks down at his shoes. He glances at Sam and Jess. He looks at his shoes again. He twiddles the rose between his fingers. He stares at Sam. He stares at Jess. He examines the shoes one more time. Then, about 10 minutes later, he picks Sam.

Jess may be leaving, but she's still a card-carrying member of the Blake cult.

"You are an incredible man. And you deserve love," she says before hopping into her limo.

That sums up the core message of this show pretty nicely. See you next week.

"Never in doubt." Source: Channel 10

"Oh god, the footy's on. I'm totally missing it." Source: Channel 10

The Bachelor next screens at 7:30pm on Wednesday, on Network Ten. Stay tuned right after the show for our recap. In the meantime, you can find Sam on Twitter: @SamClench

Defence chief warns Aussie troops

Australia will be 'utterly unflinching' in the fight against Islamic State at home and abroad, Tony Abbott has told world leaders.Addressing a special United Nations Security Council session on the foreign fighter terrorist threat, Mr Abbott said IS had declared war on the world. Courtesy Sky News.

DEFENCE chief Mark Binskin has issued a fresh warning to his troops in the wake of an attack against a navy officer at his Sydney home.

The 41-year-old was in full uniform when he was allegedly approached by two men of Middle Eastern appearance in Bella Vista, in Sydney's north-west, on Thursday morning.

The officer told Kings Cross police that he was threatened and assaulted about 6.30am, leaving him with minor bruising.

Air Chief Marshal Binskin told News Corp Australia that he had not altered his view that he would not tell Defence members to not wear their uniform.

However he urged them to be diligent and to look out for each other as the risk grew of reprisal attacks by Islamic militants and their supporters angered by Australian involvement in Iraq.

"I have not issued any change to my previous direction," he said.

"It remains — think about where you're going, be aware of your surroundings, and exercise common sense and judgment when considering where and when to wear your uniform in public."

Air Chief Marshal Binskin used his Facebook page to urged his people to be aware of their surroundings and to avoid being distracted by their mobile phone while they were in public.

"Tell someone where you're going and when you expect to return," he wrote.

"Try to park in high traffic, well lit areas with good visibility and lock your car when it's unattended, even if it's in the garage."

He also advised them to consider downloading an app on their smartphone that links a person and their location to emergency services.

"Simple steps like these can help you and your family feel more at ease — but most importantly, make sure you look out for each other."

ED Sheeran has announced an Australian arena tour on his lonesome and on a budget.

Sheeran will charge only $99 for tickets for all concerts on his April/May tour next year, with none of the usual VIP packages or premium seating charges.

It will also be the first time since the late John Denver in 1994 that a sole musician has done an arena-level tour of Australia without a band.

Sheeran uses his acoustic guitar and a hi-tech pedal to create a symphony of sounds triggered by looping his vocals or drum beats on a guitar.

The 23-year-old Brit will play Brisbane Riverstage on March 20, Sydney's Qantas Credit Union Arena on March 24, Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on March 28, Adelaide's AEC Arena on April 1 and Perth Arena on April 4.

Tickets go on sale October 2.

This will be Sheeran's fourth Australian tour in as many years, but his biggest venues to date.

Sheeran is no stranger to big crowds — he'll play to 100,000 people at the AFL Grand Final this weekend with Tom Jones, including a free show at the MCG afterwards. He also supported his mate Taylor Swift on her US stadium tour last year.

Promoter Michael Gudinski applauded Sheeran setting his ticket prices at a low level.

"He remembers lining up as a kid to get good tickets and believes that any fan should have the chance to get the best seats, not just the ones with the most money. I wish more artists would take this initiative."

Huge following ... Ed Sheeran is set to play his biggest Aussie venues to date. Picture: AP Source: AP

Sheeran's second album X (or Multiply) has already spawned the No. 1 Sing and Top 5 Don't, while his debut + (or plus) sold over 300,000 copies in Australia and was home to the hits The A Team, You Need Me I Don't Need You, Lego House, Drunk, Small Bump and Give Me Love.

Sheeran showcased his new loop pedal when promoting X in Australia earlier this year.

"It's a fancier loop pedal," Sheeran said. "It can do more things so it'll sound better. The arena show will be great."

LEGENDARY Australian rockers AC/DC have confirmed Malcolm Young has officially retired from the band as they reveal their new record Rock Or Bust will be released on November 28.

The 15th studio record from the enduring band will be their first without Malcolm in their 40-year career.

LEGENDS: The ten most amazing AC/DC moments

UNWELL: AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young seriously ill

AC/DC announced earlier this year that the founding rhythm guitarist was "taking a break from the band due to ill health."

While frontman Brian Johnston later revealed Malcolm had been hospitalised, the nature of his illness has remained undisclosed and the band have made a pact not to discuss it.

As AC/DC gear up to unleash their first new tunes in six years, they stated Malcolm would not be touring or recording with them in the future.

"Unfortunately due to the nature of Malcolm's illness, he will not be rejoining the band," they said in a statement issued by their label Alberts and Sony Music Australia.

The band confirmed they will embark on a world tour in honour of Rock Or Bust and their 40th anniversary, with Angus and Malcolm Young's nephew Steve joining as guitarist.

He also played on the 11 tracks recorded in 10 days at the Warehouse Studio in Vancouver and produced by Brendan O'Brien.

Rock Or Bust is the follow-up to their hugely successful 2008 album Black Ice, which sold eight million copies worldwide and debuted at No. 1 in 31 countries.

When launching his debut solo album last month, drummer Phil Rudd dismissed rumours that AC/DC had considered calling it a day in the wake of Malcolm's ill health.

"Angus Young will never retire," Rudd said.

"We were never going to retire. It'll never happen. Angus will never retire and as long as Angus never retires I won't f---ing retire either."

Rudd said Angus took on the songwriting duties solo in his brother's absence and next year's tour details were yet to be finalised.

"I'll get a call a month before they need me. We've done some long, hard tours. It's not easy," Rudd said.

"You do it for 18 months, you're the walking dead when you finish, especially as you get older. But everything's great in the band, we're ready to fire up on all cylinders again."

Cuddles threaten hook-up culture

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 23 September 2014 | 04.29

SICK and tired of the hook-up culture of dating apps but still crave a certain level of intimacy?

Forget Tinder and Grindr - there's a new located-based social-meeting application on the market just for cuddling.

The new app, Cuddlr, has already become a topic of discussion since it was released on September 11.

It "provides a welcome break from hook-up culture, while still making it easy to meet people near you and establish a physical connection."

READ: THE LAST TINDER FRONTIER

In an interview with Salon magazine, Cuddlr founder Charlie Wilson said the app started as a joke with their designer Jeff Kulak.

"We talked about it initially as a joke, the name being a play on the common "-r" trope for apps. But then we both quickly decided that there's a real need for this, that we'd both actually use that app if it existed, and that it was technically feasible for us to make it happen," Mr Wilson told the American magazine.

He said for a first-time cuddle it was important to establish a cuddle etiquette by talking about length, location and position.

"It's possible that you'll discover a mismatch here — both people only want to be the little spoon, say — in which case you can compromise or call off the cuddle."

New terror threat ‘eclipses IS’

Julie Bishop has said Arab states can be trusted to crack down on wealthy citizens funding terror groups.

A new terror group has reportedly been formed to launch attacks at the West. Source: AFP Source: AFP

The Khorasan group — which the US has hit in its air strikes against Syria — was actively plotting against a US homeland target and Western targets, according to reports.

The threat was "imminent", a source told CNN.

US Central Command said that eight strikes were conducted against Khorasan targets including training camps, an explosives factory and command facilities.

As the world reacts with horror to the Islamic State, the United States raised an alert over an "unholy mix" of militants specifically targeting the West.

As al-Qaeda fragments after the death of its leader Osama bin Laden, one of its many offshoots in the Middle East has named itself Khorasan. It asserts the sole reason for its existence is to attack the United States and Europe.

The White House believes them. The US military launched air strikes in Syria on Tuesday, targeting the Khorasan group.

The Obama administration has said that the Islamic State, the target of more than 160 air strikes in recent weeks, does not pose an imminent threat to the US homeland. The Khorasan group, however, is considered a clear and present danger.

RELATED: Is al Qaeda planning to surgically implant bombs?

US intelligence sources have revealed they have intercepted discussions from Khorasan that prompted a heightened terror alert among airlines and airports earlier this year, with mobile phones and laptops being banned on flights to the US from Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The director of US national intelligence James Clapper named the new terrorist organisation for the first time last week.

Deadly inspiration ... An attack on the West on the scale of the September 11, 2001, is the reported goal of a new terror organisation based in Syria, US officials claim. Source: Source: New York City Police Source: News Limited

The warning was initially lost amid his dramatic admission that he had "mistakenly misled" Congress about the surveillance of US citizens last year.

"There is potentially yet another threat to the homeland, yes," he told an intelligence conference.

"In terms of threat to the homeland, Khorasan may pose as much of a danger as Islamic State."

Until now, US officials have been reluctant to name the group and its members.

Clapper first warned a Senate hearing in January that a group of core al-Qaeda militants from Afghanistan and Pakistan was plotting attacks against the West from Syria. But the group was not named.

Republican Adam Schiff, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, declined to name the group in an interview with AP. But he described concerns among intelligence officials about "an unholy mix of people in Iraq and Syria right now — some who come from (Yemen), some who come from Afghanistan and Pakistan, others from the Maghreb" in North Africa.

Icon of evil ... Shiite militiamen hold the flag of the Islamic State militant group they captured, during an operation outside Amirli, north of Baghdad, Iraq. Source: AP Source: AP

"They can combine in ways that could pose a greater threat than their individual pieces. And that's something we worry about," said Schiff.

But Republican member of Congress, Mike Rogers, took the threat warning one step further. He says Khorasan is "engaging with al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to develop a terror plot to bring down aeroplanes."

Like the Islamic State, Khorasan spawned amid the confusion and turmoil wracking Syria. Feeding from the US-backed Muslim-based opposition to Syria's President Assad, the terror cell is reportedly not interested in carving out a new caliphate.

Instead, it draws inspiration from the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Centre and Pentagon. It is reportedly actively recruiting Islamic fighters with Western passports in order to conduct similar strikes.

BORN OF BLOOD

Despite the years of drone missile strikes against the leadership of core al-Qaeda in Pakistan and Yemen, the movement's offshoots and affiliates remain a threat to the West. It has been rejuvenated in the past year as offshoots have grown in strength and numbers, bolstered by a flood of Western extremists.

Muhsin al Fadhli, 33, is reported to be the leader of the veteran al Qaeda operatives from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen who have formed the new terror cell.

The name "Khorasan" refers to a province under the Islamic caliphate, or religious empire, of old that included parts of Afghanistan.

A member of al Qaeda since he was a teenager, the New York Times says Fadhli was such a closely trusted adviser to Bin Laden that he was one of the very few who knew of the September 11 attacks in advance.

His terror credentials include organising a suicide attack on an oil tanker in the Red Sea, conspiring to attack a hotel frequented by US officials in Yemen and plotting to attack a US base in Kuwait.

Terror training ground ... Afghan security forces stand guard at the site of a suicide attack near Kabul. Al-Qaeda veterans from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Yemen are said to be behind the newly formed Khorasan group. Source: AFP Source: AFP

CNN reports that Fadhli arrived in Syria in 2013 to work with al Qaeda affiliates in the region. Fadhli is said to be copying the Islamic State's social media recruitment campaign to seek and train Westerners willing to attack their homelands.

US intelligence has expressed fears Khorasan recruits may include some trained by al Qaeda's master bombmaker in Yemen, Ibrahim al Asiri, who is believed to be the brains behind several attempts to bring down airliners with devices such as exploding underwear and shoe bombs.

According to US intelligence assessments, the Khorasan militants have been testing new ways to slip explosives past airport security.

US officials say it was because of Khorasan's ties with Asiri that the Transportation Security Administration in July decided to ban uncharged mobile phones and laptops from flights to the US that originated in Europe and the Middle East.

"The group's repeated efforts to conceal explosive devices to destroy aircraft demonstrate its continued pursuit of high-profile attacks against the West, its increasing awareness of Western security procedures and its efforts to adapt to those procedures that we adopt," Nicholas Rasmussen, deputy director of the National Counterterrorism Center, recently told a Senate panel.

US officials have identified some members of the Khorasan group, but would not disclose the individuals' names because of concerns they would hide from intelligence-gathering.

Intelligence officials have been deeply concerned about dozens of Americans and hundreds of Europeans who have gone to fight for various jihadist groups in Syria. Some of those Westerners' identities are unknown and therefore they are less likely to draw the attention of intelligence officials when they purchase tickets and board a crowded jetliner heading for European and American cities.

TRACKING TERROR

A US-led effort to galvanise the international community against what the Obama administration officials call an "unprecedented" threat from Western-based extremists flocking to Syria and Iraq will be taken to the UN this week.

"These are individuals who've been trained. These are individuals who have access to military equipment. And these are individuals who have indicated a willingness to die for their cause," a White House spokesman said.

President Barack Obama is expected to lead the UN Security Council session that begins tomorrow, just the second time a US president has done so.

What President Obama wants out of the UN meeting, a the spokesman said, "is to have a discussion about what kinds of global standards can be put in place to mitigate the threat from these individuals."

Prying eyes ... This file combination of images shows an airport staff member demonstrating a full body scan at Manchester Airport in Manchester, northwest England. Source: AFP Source: News Limited

The Security Council is expected to adopt a resolution that would require nations to bar their citizens from travelling abroad to join terrorism organisations in a bid to stem the flow of Europeans, Americans and members of other Western nations into their ranks.

The US has been dealing for more than decade with the problem of Islamic extremists flocking to various battlefields, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Yemen. But the movement of an estimated 15,000 foreign fighters to the civil war in Syria, which has spilt into Iraq, is an "unprecedented flow," that creates an increased risk that some of those people will return to their home countries to attempt terrorist attacks, officials said.

And they are also worried about the presence of foreigners within the Islamic State, including the militant with the British accent who appeared to behead two American journalists and a British aid worker.

SLIPPING THROUGH THE GAPS

US intelligence agencies are working to track Westerners travelling to fight with extremists in Syria, but there are major gaps.

An Obama administration official said last night that the US "didn't have full knowledge" of the travel patterns of Mehdi Nemmouche, a Frenchman who returned to Europe this year after fighting in Syria. On May 24, prosecutors say, he methodically shot four people at the Jewish Museum in central Brussels. Three died instantly, one afterwards. Nemmouche was arrested later, apparently by chance.

The US also failed to detect when Moner Mohammad Abusalha, an American who grew up a basketball fan in Vero Beach, Florida, travelled back home from the Syrian battlefield. He later returned to Syria, and in May killed 16 people and himself in a suicide bombing attack against Syrian government forces.

The US and many European nations already have laws on the books that allow them to prosecute their citizens who attempt to or succeed in travelling to join extremist groups. The UN resolution is intended to prod other countries, such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey, to step up efforts to stop the flow of foreign fighters. It is also designed to facilitate more sharing of travel data and other intelligence designed to allow the tracking of foreign fighters, the officials said.

CHINA'S e-commerce giant Alibaba began trading its shares Friday on the New York Stock Exchange.

It's now valued at over $US231 billion.

Here are ten things to know about Alibaba, and why its initial public offering made history:

THE BIGGEST: Alibaba raised $21.8 billion in its debut, making it the biggest U.S.-listed IPO in history after the IPO of credit card processing company Visa in 2008. If Alibaba's investment banks were to exercise their option to sell an additional 48 million shares, it could make Alibaba's IPO the biggest in the world, beating out the $22 billion IPO of Agricultural Bank of China in 2010.

DON'T FORGET YAHOO: It may have been a big day for Alibaba and its founder Jack Ma, but Yahoo's investors are feeling pretty good after Alibaba's IPO. Yahoo was an early investor in Alibaba, paying $1 billion for a stake in the company in 2005. Yahoo likely made $8.3 billion to $9.5 billion in Alibaba's IPO, and will still own a 16 per cent stake in the company worth $37.7 billion.

ALIBABA ECLIPSES SILICON VALLEY: Alibaba now has a market capitalisation of roughly $219.8 billion, according to FactSet. That makes the company bigger than some of the U.S. technology industry's most successful names, such as Facebook, eBay, and even Amazon.com.

ALL IN ONE: Investors are interested in Alibaba because the company dominates many businesses in China that, here in the U.S., are run by individual companies. Alibaba owns the websites Tmall and Taobao, which are similar to Amazon.com and eBay, respectively. The company also earns money from transaction fees related to its various businesses through Alipay, which is like PayPal. That's just three of Alibaba's many subsidiaries.

BIG PROFITS: Unlike the U.S. e-commerce giant Amazon, Alibaba has been consistently profitable. The company had $8.5 billion in sales in its latest fiscal year ending in March, with net income of $3.8 billion. The year prior, Alibaba had $5.4 billion in sales and $1.4 billion in profits. In comparison, Amazon sold $74.4 billion in goods in 2013, but made only $274 million in profits that year. In 2012, Amazon reported a net loss of $39 million.

RISKS: If Alibaba does well for investors, it will be the exception to what has been the trend for Chinese companies. When Chinese companies have listed stocks on American markets, their shares have lost an average 1 per cent a year for the next three years, compared with an average 7 per cent annual gain for other U.S. IPOs, according to research by Jay Ritter, a finance professor at the University of Florida.

SECOND TIME AROUND: This isn't Alibaba's first time going public. Alibaba took its online shopping portal Alibaba.com public in 2007 in Hong Kong. Alibaba.com was a publicly traded company only for a few years. Alibaba took Alibaba.com private in 2012.

SOLID GOLD: Jack Ma, who started Alibaba in 1999 in his apartment in the Chinese city of Hangzhou, is now among the richest people in the world. Ma's ownership in the company is worth roughly $18.2 billion, based on Alibaba's closing share price Friday. That doesn't include the shares he sold in the IPO, which are worth another $867 million, and his other investments. Bloomberg put his entire net worth at $21.9 billion, making him the 34th richest person in the world.

BIG WIN FOR NYSE: Alibaba chose to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange, making it the second A-list technology company to go public on the Big Board in less than a year. The NYSE handled Twitter's IPO last year. NYSE's competitor, the Nasdaq Stock Market, has struggled to win the business of big tech companies since Facebook's IPO in 2012, which was plagued with technical problems.

LIFE IS LIKE A BOX OF ...: Jack Ma biggest hero is the fictional character Forrest Gump. "I really like that guy," Ma said, in an interview with business channel CNBC on Friday. "Every time I'm frustrated, I watch the movie. (The movie tells) me that no matter whatever changed, you are you."

Why Australians rarely have sex while sober

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 21 September 2014 | 04.29

FOR most Australians, dating and drinking go hand-in-hand. Pubs and clubs set the scene for hook-ups, and first dates tend to be at bars where we turn to a glass — or bottle — of wine to take the edge off our nerves.

But what starts out as social lubricant can lead to sexual dysfunction. Sex therapist Jacqueline Hellyer told news.com.au that she's seen a rise in the number of couples who have never had sober sex.

"It's not unusual for me to meet couples who only ever have sex in substance-induced states," she said. "When they meet, they're on alcohol or drugs, and when they first have sex they're drinking or doing drugs. It develops into a relationship but they are still only having sex when they go out and drink or get on drugs."

Desiree Spierings, sex therapist from Sexual Health Australia, said it's been an increasing problem in the past two years.

"We're seeing an increase in couples who have only had sex with each other while using drugs or alcohol and cannot get aroused without it," she said.

While drinking on dates is hardly a new trend, Spierings said these days many people find it difficult to move from casual substance-induced sex to a relationship.

"They get anxious because it would mean relating to their partner while not using drugs on a day-to-day basis," she said. "We see them in therapy when they try to change their lifestyle and not use drugs any longer and they find it hard to keep the passion going and maintain an active sex life."

But substance-induced sex is not just limited to young partygoers, Hellyer said she also hears from housewives who need a couple of wines at dinner to get in the mood.

"People use it for relaxation and a bit of an inhibitor as well," she said.

An Australian survey of young adults found 92 per cent of people who had had casual sex in the past six months had used alcohol or drugs, and a survey of American university students found a third had consumed about five drinks before their most recent sexual encounter.

Rachel Kramer-Bussel, editor of Best Sex Writing 2013, told news.com.au that it took quitting alcohol four years ago for her to realise what a major impact drinking had had on her sex life.

"It would help bypass the part of my brain telling me to go more slowly or be more cautious," said Kramer-Bussel, 38.

"I definitely used alcohol to be bolder in approaching and coming on to people. With sober sex I'm more conscious of what I'm doing. I can judge if I'm not really into a person or a sex act, and I can speak up for myself better."

Last month, news.com.au reported on a US study that showed alcohol dulls the "alarm signal" that normally warns you you're making a mistake, which explains why people like Ben Delaney*, 31, have spent many a Sunday morning waking next to somebody he never would have looked twice at sober.

"I'd be out on the ciders with the boys and had all the confidence to crack onto a chick and ask her home," he admitted.

"But when I'd wake up next to someone who wasn't exactly my type, it was pretty awkward and embarrassing."

A new fitness focus has seen Delaney take some time off the booze, which he said has been an eye-opener.

"I'm probably more choosy with women, but at the same time you're lacking that sense of security you have when you're drunk," he said.

Luke Williams, who is writing a book about his time living in a house with chronic methamphetamine users, said the drug's affect on people's sex lives and fantasies is powerful and often disturbing.

"With sober sex I'm more conscious of what I'm doing," admitted one man. Source: ThinkStock

"Meth has a reputation for getting people in sexual situations they otherwise wouldn't want to be in," he said. "I have slept with people who I genuinely find disgusting when I have been off my face — indeed, the fact they are so disgusting just seems to add to the excitement at the time."

Williams, whose book will be published by Scribe early next year, said that sex hasn't been the same since recovering from meth addiction.

"I have kind of lost interest in sex because it doesn't seem quite as exciting," he said.

Associate Professor Lucy Burns, a senior researcher at the University of NSW's National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC), said starting a relationship with substance-fuelled sex can spark a dangerous cycle.

"If they begin a relationship in that context, to get themselves back into that mindset, they might have to put themselves back in that [drug-fuelled] situation," she said.

That's something Renee Barnes*, 31, recognised after spending two years feeling pressure to do drugs before sex in order to match her ex's inebriated state.

"I would become way more kinky and less self-conscious — we'd do things that I never would have dreamt of when I was sober in the morning," she said.

Eventually it became obvious that their connection was purely about sex — and therefore drugs — and Barnes ended it.

"We didn't hang out with each other's families — all we had was a passionate physical relationship," she said.

Hellyer believes porn is part of the problem because it sets high expectations and some people reach for alcohol or drugs to replicate the intensity.

"In porn movies, women are always ready for it and they do all these wild and crazy things, and people think that's normal," Hellyer said. "They can get this view of sex being this full-on, hot and heavy thing, and they have to take something to get into that state."

But Hellyer said alcohol and drugs are really a Band-Aid solution. "The substances shortcut the mechanisms whereby we relax and open up to our partner sexually," she said.

"They've never learnt what they actually need to get to that heightened sense of arousal. I teach people how to open up to each other in a way that's real, as opposed to substance-induced."

Selfies taken at murder scene

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 20 September 2014 | 04.29

A manhunt is underway after two British tourists were found dead early Monday morning on the island of Koh Tao in Thailand. The murders have rocked the quiet tourist destination, which is seen as an alternative to more party-heavy Thai getaways.

THE investigation into who killed two British tourists in Thailand has taken a bizarre twist, as police let the public take selfies at the murder scene.

The Mirror in the UK reports that tourists have been seen taking selfies on Koh Tao, where British couple David Miller, 24, and Hannah Witheridge, 23, were found naked and beaten to death near a beachside bungalow early Monday.

Police also seem to be clueless as to who the killer might be, after the Mirror also witnessed them taking more DNA swabs on the sand from local workers who were forced to hold up identification signs near where the murder weapon — a garden hoe — was first discovered.

The Mirror reports that "officers have also been carrying out tests in public on male and female bar and restaurant workers, who were made to line up in the sand".

The investigation in to Miller and Witheridge's brutal murder has now been branded a "joke" by one local, who claimed it was "offensive" to be asking them to undertake tests.

Thailand's top police and forensics chief also arrived on the island today, according to Mirror reporter Andy Lines who tweeted that Witheridge's parents would not be going to the island after they arrived in Bangkok.

They were advised earlier this week that they should not look at her body as it was unrecognisable from the fatal injuries she suffered, according to authorities.

As they met senior officers leading the inquiry, detectives admitted they had no suspects after forensic tests came back negative – and said the killer may have fled the holiday island.

Hopes of a breakthrough in solving the double killing now appear to rest on a used butt from a cheap cigarette of the sort smoked by Thais, migrant workers and long-time expats.

DNA from two unidentified men has been found on the butt, and genetic material from at least one was also discovered on Miss Witheridge's body.

The news of selfies being taken at the crime scene and further haphazard police DNA testing by the sea comes after residents have pooled their funds into a reward for clues about the killers.

The search for suspects continued on the southern diving island of Koh Tao.

The police investigation appeared to have stalled after post-mortem examinations of the victims' bodies in Bangkok failed to find DNA links to key suspects questioned so far.

"At this point we offer 50,000 baht ($1,500) for anyone who can provide clues which lead to the arrest of a suspect," Koh Tao mayor Chaiyan Turasakul told AFP. "The money comes from donations from the people of Koh Tao." The murders have rocked the normally laid-back island and landed a new blow to Thailand's image as a tourist haven, battered by months of political protests that ended in May's army coup.

Several dozen Koh Tao residents held a religious ceremony to offer prayers for the dead on Thursday, Chaiyan said, with many more assisting police in the search.

On Friday regional police commander Panya Maman said around 160 officers were hunting for clues on the small island, which neighbours the more-visited Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand.

"I have deployed police in nearby islands as well as on the mainland," he said. With no arrests and an apparent lack of new leads, it is unclear where the police investigation can turn.

Earlier this week comments by Thailand's military ruler Prayut Chan-O-Cha, suggesting tourists in bikinis could be more vulnerable to attack, triggered an international outcry, leading the premier to apologise.

"They think our country is beautiful and is safe so they can do whatever they want, they can wear bikinis and walk everywhere," Prayut said in off-the-cuff remarks to government officials, two days after the murder of the British pair.

But "can they be safe in bikinis ... unless they are not beautiful?" On Thursday, in a rare public moment of contrition from the army chief, Prayut said he was "sorry" his remarks hurt people.

According to an official source, Prayut will send letters to the British prime minister and the families of the two victims offering his condolences over the deaths and explaining his recent comments.

Thai police chief General Jarumporn Suramanpee has also continued to dodge questions about the haphazard way the inquiry has been conducted.

He denied that officers had 'mucked up' in allowing large numbers of tourists to trample over the crime scene beside Sairee beach on Kho Tao.

But Gen Suramanpee admitted that he did not know whether the killers were still on the island or had escaped since the murders.

He promised the victims' families that the perpetrators would be caught, but confessed:

"No, we don't know who the murderer is."

Meanwhile, two British friends of Mr Miller were allowed to return home to Jersey by Thai police after being questioned as 'possible suspects'.

Chris Ware, 24, and his brother Jimmy, 27, had been on holiday with Mr Miller on Kho Tao and have now been eliminated from the inquiry along with Burmese migrant workers after DNA test results proved inconclusive.

Photos of Chris Ware being questioned showed a cut on his right hand, but it was revealed yesterday that it was caused by a firework. The Jersey Evening Post reported how Mr Ware wrote on Facebook on Wednesday: "I'm going through the worst tragedy of my life!"
