ED Sheeran has announced an Australian arena tour on his lonesome and on a budget.

Sheeran will charge only $99 for tickets for all concerts on his April/May tour next year, with none of the usual VIP packages or premium seating charges.

It will also be the first time since the late John Denver in 1994 that a sole musician has done an arena-level tour of Australia without a band.

Sheeran uses his acoustic guitar and a hi-tech pedal to create a symphony of sounds triggered by looping his vocals or drum beats on a guitar.

The 23-year-old Brit will play Brisbane Riverstage on March 20, Sydney's Qantas Credit Union Arena on March 24, Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne on March 28, Adelaide's AEC Arena on April 1 and Perth Arena on April 4.

Tickets go on sale October 2.

This will be Sheeran's fourth Australian tour in as many years, but his biggest venues to date.

Sheeran is no stranger to big crowds — he'll play to 100,000 people at the AFL Grand Final this weekend with Tom Jones, including a free show at the MCG afterwards. He also supported his mate Taylor Swift on her US stadium tour last year.

Promoter Michael Gudinski applauded Sheeran setting his ticket prices at a low level.

"He remembers lining up as a kid to get good tickets and believes that any fan should have the chance to get the best seats, not just the ones with the most money. I wish more artists would take this initiative."

Sheeran's second album X (or Multiply) has already spawned the No. 1 Sing and Top 5 Don't, while his debut + (or plus) sold over 300,000 copies in Australia and was home to the hits The A Team, You Need Me I Don't Need You, Lego House, Drunk, Small Bump and Give Me Love.

Sheeran showcased his new loop pedal when promoting X in Australia earlier this year.

"It's a fancier loop pedal," Sheeran said. "It can do more things so it'll sound better. The arena show will be great."
