THE boyfriend of a woman killed when crossing a busy Melbourne intersection has described the day she died as "the worst day of my life".

Drew Ridley gathered with 100 friends and family members to celebrate the short life of his girlfriend Josie Edden in Brunswick tonight.

Sitting to the side of the Code Black Coffee warehouse where mourners hugged and cried, Drew held a beer, took a breath and told of his "deeply caring" girlfriend who didn't realise how much she was loved.

"She wouldn't admit it even if she did," he said.

On Tuesday morning, Drew left Josie's house for the coffee shop where they both worked — she had left a little while earlier.

When he arrived at Code Black to find she wasn't there, he started making calls.

"Then a customer walked in and asked me if I knew what happened on Collins St," he said.

"My heart sank."

Rushing to the scene, Drew found the distraught truck driver who had earlier turned into an intersection, not realising Josie had tripped and was lying on the road.

He asked the truck driver, standing metres from where Josie lay, whether it was a woman with blonde hair who was under the tarpaulin.

It was police who later told him his girlfriend of three and a half years had died.

Drew didn't speak to the truck driver again.

But he hoped he was all right.

"I really hope he's doing OK," he said.

"No-one wants that to happen to them, it's just one of those things, just an accident."

Tonight, surrounded by their friends, both his parents and Josie's, Drew questioned how he could move on without the girl he had just started seeing again after a 12 month break, the girl who always formed her own opinions and couldn't help but take care of others.

"She took care of anyone, she didn't judge people, and she always took care of me," he said.

"I don't know what I'm going to do without her man — I don't know what I'm going to do."
