RENAE Smith has become the latest MasterChef hopeful to bite the dust.

The 31-year-old mum was eliminated from the cooking race during Thursday night's pressure test, just as things are really starting to fire up on the show.

In a near impossible MasterChef challenge, contestants were tasked with the ultimate dessert re-creation, but there was a catch — they weren't allowed to see it, they weren't allowed to smell or taste it, they weren't even given a recipe.

Matt Preston, after tasting a dish by head chef Dave Verheul of The Town Mouse in Melbourne, decided to challenge contestants to recreate the sweet masterpiece based solely on his published review.

Cruel move indeed, Preston.

Renae came up against Ben, Brent and Tracy and the nervous four had just two hours to replicate the mysterious dish — a pear sorbet in a nest of piped chocolate ganache, sitting on a walnut crumble with poached pear with salted caramel.

It quickly became a guessing game as each attempted to unravel the clues in their ingredients box. But Renae, attempting to multi-task, managed to burn two trays of white chocolate, forcing her to start from scratch. She had also never made a sorbet before.

"I felt confident that I was going to be able to execute the elements but as I started plating, my ganache was just not working and I kept popping those stupid piping bags over and over again," she told news.com.au of her dish.

"The whole bag would just explode and then it would explode again."

Unfortunately, Renae's ganache was nothing but a pool of caramel and her dessert was missing one crucial element — the crumble.

"I just had to hope that it would taste good and that would save me. I did the absolute best that I could," she said.

The Newtown-based mum of two is not usually one to shy away from winging it and has been known to alter recipes on the show before.

"The difference with making this one up as I went was there were techniques I'd never seen before. I'm more than happy to wing it a lot of the time and I understand flavours, but when it's a technique I've never heard of before and in the heat of the moment and in the time that I had, that's a different story."

Despite bowing out in eighth spot, Renae says she's not disappointed to leave the competition and is glad to be back with her daughters, Kyah, 12, and Paris, 10.

Post-cooking show, the single mum said she's focused on the future.

"Initially I've got to start earning money again. I've got kids, I can't go into a restaurant, I just don't have the time for that," she said, adding that she is currently working with Mantra in Woolloomooloo and Vicinity in Alexandria and has written their breakfast menu.

"So now when you go to Vicinity, it's healthy but there's a mix of me in it."

When asked who she thought was the number one threat all along, she said: "Emilia. I think I picked her as the winner on day two."

Could this mean the super confident marketing co-ordinator from Victoria will take out the MasterChef title for 2014? With seven fierce contestants still left in the race, we'll have to wait and see.

Wow factor ... Now THIS is what the mystery dish was meant to look like. Source: Supplied
