LISTEN up, drivers. Long weekend coming. Must drive somewhere. Need petrol. Where cheap? Here cheap.
New analysis from the meerkat site, Comparethemarket.com.au, has revealed the cheapest suburbs to fill up before your mandatory long-weekend road trip.
Unleaded petrol prices in Adelaide, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane were measured across the 31-day period from August 26 to September 27, revealing stark differences.
Brisbane and Perth residents are paying the most at the bowser with 144.3 cents and 144.2 cents per litre respectively.
Adelaide came third with 140.6 cents per litre, followed by Sydney with 140.5 cents per litre.
Melburnians scored the cheapest petrol, averaging at 139.5 cents per litre — 4.8 cents cheaper than Brisbane.
While Sydney isn't the most expensive, it does have the highest price difference within subregions — a 6.8 cent difference between the cheapest suburb, Hurstville (138.5 cents) and Eastern Suburbs (145 cents).
Brisbane had the second biggest price gap of 4.7 cents. The cheapest petrol is in the far south at 142.6 cents per litre, compared with 147.3 cents per litre in the west of the city.
In Melbourne, Frankston and Cranbourne were the cheapest areas to buy petrol at 137.7 cents.
Motorists in Adelaide should head to Payneham (139.2 cents) and in Perth, your best bet is Girrawheen (142.3 cents).
Comparethemarket.com.au spokeswoman Abigail Koch said the old seven-day price cycle — the source of "cheap Tuesdays" — no longer existed as the cycle had become so stretched out.
Petrol stations in most cities follow price cycle of between 10 to 22 days, with the lowest prices usually offered for two to three consecutive days.
"If petrol is sitting at say 150 cents per litre, you can work out that within two weeks it'll be down near the bottom," she said. "Try to fill up at the lowest point. If you have to get petrol at the top of the cycle, we say top up, don't fill up."
