WHAT'S so special about these pants that would cause 12,000 people to want them before they even hit shelves?

It might be because they took over a year to design, or maybe it's because they're made of wool. It could be the fact that the makers, Everlane, have a good reputation for using factories ethically, and for keeping costs down. Either way, the US online retailer's first ever foray into pants has already proven to be a raging success.

"It took us over a year to align on the right pants, mostly from a fabric and cost perspective," Petra Langerova, the brand's head of design, explained to the Huffington Post.

"While pants are a very technical item to design, it is the few little details that make a difference — like getting just the right length or little side seam slits.

"We chose to use a high quality wool with some stretch in it, making sure that the pants are as wearable and comfortable as possible," she said.

So intent were the brand on producing the best pair of pants possible that they ended up creating two pairs — a slim pair, and a slouch pair.

"We tested many different fabrics before settling on the right one for our women's pant," states the Everlane website.

"We ultimately decided upon two different fabrics and two different designs — and two completely different pairs of pants. Our Women's Straight Leg Pant is made with stretch wool for a modern, tailored fit while our Women's Pleated Pant is made with smooth 100 per cent wool for a fluid drape."

Both pairs of pants are available now in black or navy and will set you back between $98 and $120. Everlane do not ship to Australia, but they do recommend HopShopGo as "an effective workaround."
