OVER 300 passengers on a United Airways flight from San Francisco to Sydney were stuck at Canberra's domestic airport for eight hours this morning.

The plane was diverted to Canberra due to debris on the Sydney runway and since arriving at 9am, spent all day stranded on the tarmac.

As the domestic airport does not have any customs or immigration facilities, the passengers were eventually allowed off the plane in a confined space to stretch their legs and get some fresh air.

However passengers reported the bathrooms ran out of toilet paper and soap.

A spokesman for the Customs and Border Protection said earlier, "until a request is received for formal border clearance, Customs and Border Protection is providing an area outside the aircraft in which passengers can get fresh air and stretch their legs without formally clearing the border."

As the pilot who flew from San Francisco had exhausted his legal limit of flying hours, passengers said they were told they would be stuck on the tarmac while they waited for two United Airlines pilots to arrive on a Qantas plane in order to fly them back to Sydney.

The plane reportedly left Canberra Airport at 5:18pm this afternoon, meaning some passengers like those that connected from New York spent over 30 hours on the plane.

One passenger on board, Mr Constantine, said the pilot had apologised profusely and criticised the local authorities in Canberra for not being flexible and understanding.

"It's an unfortunate situation," a spokeswoman for Canberra airport told AAP.
