He said there was no indication the victim knew the men who attacked him.

"From what I viewed on the CCTV footage it was not a provoked attack," he said.

"There appears to have been a discussion leading up to the assault. However we are not aware of what words were exchanged.

"From the CCTV there appears to be interaction, a verbal interaction between the victim and two males."

Police want to find out what was discussed.

Det Sgt Solomon said the attackers would face "very serious charges".

"Both offenders struck the victim," he added.

"Two girls came out of the McDonald's restaurant and immediately went to the assistance of the victim.

"Another male customer came out and also ran off in the direction of the two male offenders ... however he didn't catch them.

"There will be an autopsy conducted some time later today where the exact cause of death will be identified by a pathologist.

"His head came into contact hard with the concrete floor."

Robert Gereige, who runs Cafe Rosco two doors down from where the attack happened, said: "You do get a few drunk people by the McDonald's and you do get a few scuffles. But usually as an area it is pretty safe.

"I guess they just got into an argument. It's pretty disturbing."
