Is the TV talent show over?

TV TALENT shows are in a world of pain with The Voice Kids under a cloud and So You Think You Can Dance Australia not returning in 2015.

The move comes as Channels 9 and Seven seek to combat big ratings drops in The Voice and The X Factor — both of which will screen next year.

ANJA WINS: Is The Voice rigged?

Sources at Nine say that The Voice Kids, which featured mentors Mel B, Delta Goodrem, and Joel & Benji Madden, will be rested next year. There is the possibility that the spin-off will return in 2016.

The Voice Kids launched strongly to more than 1.62 million viewers across the five capital cities but quickly sunk. Its finale averaged a mild 938,000 viewers.

Ten has dumped So You Think You Can Dance Australia, which was a ratings disappointment despite the presence of Paula Abdul as one of the judges.

VOICE CURSE: What the judges won't tell the winner

"We can confirm that So You Think You Can Dance won't be returning to TEN in 2015," a Ten spokesperson says.

Nine is already on record as stating that they are looking at all aspects of The Voice after this year's show took a ratings dive.

This year's The Voice Winner Announced averaged a disappointing 1.579 million viewers — less than half the 3.238 million that watched Karise Eden crowned in series one.

Just as troubling, The Voice is yet to launch any consistent chart topping act. This year's winner, Anja Nissen's debut album sold a paltry 1952 copies in its first week.

The Voice reportedly costs Nine a massive $30 million — including rights fees — to produce with TV insiders saying it needs to average around 1.4 million viewers every episode simply to break even.

"If The Voice continues to shed audience in 2015 it will be a problem," media analyst Steve Allen says.

"The talent genre probably needs a rest for a season or two."

Seven is pressing on with The X Factor despite a ratings drop of more than 20 per cent in Sydney and more than 30 per cent in Melbourne compared to last year.

Seven's show, which features mentors Ronan Keating, Dannii Minogue, Natalie Bassingthwaighte, and Redfoo, has been averaging around 1.2 million viewers per episode. That is not enough for a show that reportedly costs $25 million to make.

The X Factor has a very good track record with acts including Samantha Jade, Taylor Henderson, Dami Im and Nathaniel Willemse.

"X factor auditions are already under way around the country," a Seven spokesperson says. "The level of talent and ability on show during the auditions for this series were just astounding."

Australia's Got Talent has been rejected twice by TV viewers. Seven dumped it in 2012 and Nine's reboot only lasted one season. Ten hit a wall with Young Talent Time and Everybody Dance Now.

"Arguably this (talent) is the most limiting genre of reality TV," Allen says. "There are only so many singers and dancers one can view.

"The immediate challenge for Nine and Seven is to at least maintain their 2014 audience levels (for The Voice and The X Factor) in 2015.

"Perhaps they can negotiate down the multi-million dollar format rights fees to suit these new audience levels."
