Siren loud and unclear for Razor Ray

Adelaide Oval witnessed its second controversial 'Sirengate' of the season as umpire Ray Chamberlain mistakenly signalled for three quarter time three seconds early after hearing what he thought was the siren.

THE AFL says Ray Chamberlain's decision to pump the volume in his earpiece might have contributed to the umpire prematurely ending the third quarter at Adelaide Oval on Friday night.

Chamberlain signalled three quarter-time despite three seconds remaining as Hawk Luke Breust attempted to dodge Adelaide tacklers in the forward pocket.

A fellow umpire told Chamberlain he didn't think the siren had gone, to which 'Razor Ray' replied: "Holy Geez."

It was the second siren gaffe at the redeveloped venue this season after Crow Josh Jenkins kicked a goal after time had expired but the siren went unheard in Round 9.

Chamberlain then called for a ball-up, angering Hawthorn's Sam Mitchell who asked why his team was disadvantaged.

Chamberlain replied: "Let me explain, we get this retarded chime which is meant to go simultaneously with the siren. I heard that go in my ear, that's why I blew it.

"They're the rules mate. I didn't write the book, I've just read it."

AFL football operations manager Mark Evans said the league was investigating the incident but pointed to Chamberlain's volume preference as a possible problem.

Evans said since the Jenkins blunder the whistleblowers had the buzzer played directly into their ears.

"Ray has the volume turned up quite loud in his ear, he prefers it that way, so maybe that has led to some of the distortion as well," Evans told ABC Grandstand.

"He described it as a strange tone. One of the other umpires heard it faintly although they don't have the sound turned up as loud as Ray, but other people on the system hadn't heard it at all.

"We're in a situation where the crowd noise is so loud that we've had to play the siren directly through the earpiece."

Evans said the Adelaide Oval noise issue wasn't unique, citing Seattle Seahawks' 67,000-capacity CenturyLink Field, and the league was investigating solutions.

"It is incredibly loud at that stadium, it's fantastic but it has thrown up some challenges for us," he said.

"After the incident earlier in the year we've been playing the siren directly and simultaneously, it's automated, into the umpire's communication system.

"That has worked every week. Last night though Ray Chamberlain has heard a distorted sound or tone somewhere in the three or four seconds prior to the siren sound being played, and he thought that was some indication of the siren."

Both coaches were baffled but doubted it had any affect on the match.

"Breusty still had to get past one or two opponents to get through, and could have nearly been done for holding the ball anyway," Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson said.

"It doesn't matter too much."

If Breust had slotted the goal it would have given him a run of 30 majors without missing, overtaking Tony Lockett's 29.

Breust's streak ended on 29 after he missed a set shot in the final quarter.

The Oval's Stadium Management Authority deferred all questions to the AFL, saying the issue related to the umpire and not the siren.
