A BABY girl who survived a lightning strike while still in the womb has become a medical curiosity with her growing hair standing on end as if permanently charged by static electricity.

Kimberly Gordon was delivered by emergency C-section after her parents were struck by lightning as they tried to take cover under a tree during a violent storm in Albuquerque, New Mexico on July 4 last year.

The bolt hit her father Ian Gordon before passing through his heavily pregnant girlfriend Kendra Villanueva and shooting out through her thumb, knocking both of them out.

"Everybody we've seen says it's a miracle she's alive," Mr Gordon told local news channel KOAT.

"Those first six months were a little rough, she had a lot of trouble sleeping."

Specialists say Kimberly suffered some neurological damage that has delayed her crawling and sitting up, and time will tell if she will be able to walk, eat or talk normally.

But it's another side effect that has doctors confounded — Kimberly's mop of brown hair still stands straight up as if permanently charged with electricity, earning the toddler the nickname "Flash Gordon".

"It's hard seeing she can't eat like she's supposed to and can't have food yet, just through the tube," Ms Villanueva told KOAT.

"But other than I'm glad she lived through it all."

And the little girl seems to be unperturbed by her unusual condition.

"She's just kind of a play-it-by-ear baby," Mr Gordon said.
