THE MasterChef elimination was a race to the bottom with all four contestants struggling under pressure and making potentially fatal mistakes.

Despite the other competitors serving up undercooked venison, dishes full of string and cling-wrap and with various elements missing, it was WA accounting student Steven Peh sent packing.

His rice pudding, parsnip and Jerusalem artichoke dessert was a litany of disaster including runny ice cream, lumpy panna cotta and a light dusting of jasmine rice foam that exploded all over the judges during plating.

"It was definitely the icing on the cake," says Peh, who celebrates his 21st birthday on Tuesday.

"I knew all the other elements had gone wrong and it was like 'there goes the squirt gun as well!'"

The "double trouble" pressure test was set by Scott Pickett and Joe Grbac from Melbourne's Saint Crispin restaurant, with the contestants given the choice of a savoury dish of venison, fig and beetroot, or the complicated 11-element rice-pudding dessert.

Peh, who only picked up a frying pan and began cooking a year ago, says he chose the dessert after succeeding in two previous dessert challenges. He'd also never butchered or cooked venison before and thought that making the only dessert (the other three chose venison) could work in his favour.

"It was a strategic decision," he says. "(But) as soon as they said we had two hours I was already having second thoughts and reading the recipe just confirmed it."

Peh struggled from the beginning: his panna cotta mix went lumpy, his rice wouldn't cook and his crème anglaise never quite transformed into ice cream.

Peh says he had a fleeting moment of hope when he the judges criticised all the other dishes. Queensland model Sarah undercooked her venison, forgot her figs and left cling wrap in the finished dish, Queensland IT worker Ben undercooked his venison and burnt his crépinette, while Victorian deckhand Byron managed to cook his venison properly, but forgot the figs, left his grapes on the stem and a piece of string in his dish.

Peh says that his roommate and "best friend in the house" Bryon is the person he'll miss the most. Just before leaving he told his mate: "Win it for me, win it for us. Do your thing, everyone loves you, be yourself and you'll be all right."

Having to face elimination in the first place was pure bad luck for Peh, who was forced out of competing in Sunday night's mystery box and invention test challenge due to illness.

"I always wanted to cook regardless of if I was going to pass out but it was more a decision made on general safety, being in a kitchen, and for the safety of the other contestants as well," he says. Consequently Peh went straight into elimination.

Peh intends to finish his university degree this year before travelling the world and hopes to one day open a market stall or a pop up restaurant. But the newcomer to commercial kitchens says he's still not convinced yet about becoming a chef.

"I don't want to rush into this," he says. "I'm doing work experience in various kitchens to see what I want to do. I'm not sure about the lifestyle."

Steven is sent home on Masterchef during episode 20.
