IN THE fight against terror, the US was deadly serious about getting their man even if it meant waging a war using toys.
The Washington Post has revealed a surreal plan hatched by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in America to develop a custom-made Osama bin Laden action figure aimed at scaring children.
The face of the toy was painted with a heat-dissolving material designed to peel off and reveal a red-faced bin Laden who looked like a demon, complete with piercing green eyes and black facial markings.
The result looks a lot like Star Wars character Darth Maul.

Its goal? To scare children and their parents into turning away from the actual bin Laden.
At one stage the CIA may have considered putting the toys in goodwill backpacks they gave to children, which were filled with school supplies and colour-coded: blue for boys and pink for girls.
Even more bizarre was that the CIA turned to toymaker Donald Levine, who was instrumental in creating the popular GI Joe toys for Hasbro, for his expertise.
The exact number of figurines delivered, if any, is in dispute, but a source has said hundreds were made and sent on a freighter to Pakistan in 2006.

The CIA is not denying it commissioned the toys but said the project was discontinued soon after the prototypes were developed.
"To our knowledge, there were only three individual action figures ever created, and these were merely to show what a final product might look like," CIA spokesman Ryan Trapani said.
"After being presented with these examples, the CIA declined to pursue this idea and did not produce or distribute any of these action figures. Furthermore, CIA has no knowledge of these action figures being produced or distributed by others."
Bin Laden was eventually caught and killed in 2011.
