A TEAM of archaeologists may have stumbled upon a holy discovery after uncovering what they believe could be one of the earliest pictures of Jesus.

The Spanish archaeologists are investigating whether the image found in Cairo was made by the earliest Coptic Christians in Egypt.

Experts discovered an underground structure in a series of tombs that they believe to date back to the 6th and 7th centuries.

Josep Padro and his team found a picture with "the figure of a young man, with curly hair, dressed in a short tunic and with his hand raised as if giving a blessing" among the Coptic images.

He told Spanish news site La Vanguardia that researchers believe they are dealing with a very early image of Jesus Christ.

The team excavated some 45 tonnes of rock to access the wall where the painting was found and the site is under lockdown while its authenticity is being verified.

The depiction has left experts excited. Picture: University of Barcelona Source: Supplied
