"You could hear them arguing and fighting and screaming but I couldn't understand what she was saying," Mikayla Sergi, from Griffith, said this morning.

"It was really loud and then it just went quiet.

"When I looked down off the balcony about an hour later there was blood all over the ground."

Superintendent Greg Antonjuk confirmed the couple had an argument and said the deceased woman had been drinking prior to her fall.

"Of the issues police are investigating is the involvement of alcohol," he said.

Asked whether safety standards on balconies is adequate, Supt Antonjuk said: "That's one of the questions we will be asking and putting to the Coroner."

The partner has been interviewed by police and since released.

Police said he was inside the apartment when his partner fell off the balcony and did not see anything. He is not expected to be charged.
